Echoes DLC: making me feel so so so dumb (spoilers)

I've been playing the DLC for something like 6-10 hours probably. I have explored most areas pretty well, I sort of know the objective, I know about the green fire mechanics and even about dropping the artifact. And yet I haven't even come across whatever a "stalker" is. Just the owl wanderers. I just don't know where to start in the sim world because it's so big and winding. I feel like it isn't communicated too well even after the big patch that clarifies some clues. I feel super dumb right now lol. 

The game is supposed to be scary and I've been playing for 10 hours without the pleasure of being eaten by a stalker. What am I doing wrong??
