Air Show trophy

I have been trying all afternoon to get this trophy as it's the last one I need for the platinum.

 

Does anyone have any advice on how to get the tricks where you hold L1 and then push right stick up down, down up, left right and right left to work properly? I can rarely get these to register and instead I get some random single stick trick instead. It seems completely broken to me unless I am doing something wrong  Even the other tricks don't always register properly for me, but those 4 are really driving me insane!!
