You can still use it as a quick way to get into the same warzone, though--join on your friend, leave the game, then browse your warzone history to find that warzone and rejoin it. When you rejoin you'll end up on the opposite team. Alternatively you can browse active warzones for the one your friend made, but I found that to be a much slower approach as there seems to be a delay before they show up sometimes.
