Elex What to do.

So am somewhat new at this game and I found out about the Elex pots to drink and get skill points and so on so am now having abit of a problem as am wondering what is the best course of action as am wondering should I drink a shit ton and get all my stats to max and then go after a faction and use the rest of the learning points I got to get the faction skills and so on or what as am confused at what to really go for as I have made sure to not talk to many people and am basically running around like a headless chicken trying to find out what to do. As am trying to keep my cold level down but the skill points I feel will help me a lot so am stuck here not sure if there is enough people to talk to, to get my cold level down to the bottom.
