How do you get perfect notes?

I'm confused as to where on the note I'd considered perfect. 

 

Do I tap when the tip of the ship reaches the note? When the ship is entirely on top of it?  Am I even hitting the note with the ship or is it that shockwave im looking for?

 

It feels almost entirely random if I get a perfect hit or not.

I am no pro but as far as I can tell, you set the input delay yourfelf in the game's options. Iirc it's set to 31ms as default, at least was for me.

With that delay I have to press the exact moment when my ship is in the middle of the note. I still struggle to get 75% perfects or even 15 perfects in a row, but I am getting better and better. Atm at 65% perfect notes and my longest streak was 14 perfect notes in a row.
