Tips for getting S ranks

Tip #1 Prioritise reaching the end as fast as possible

Your score is impacted by the following:

  • Time taken to reach the end
  • Times wiped out
  • Money collected
  • Maximum chain held

The things that matter most for your score is time taken to reach the end. You will want to aim to have at least 50 seconds remaining on the clock in most cases. If you can do this without wiping out then this will help as well. Also wiping out tends to use up a lot of time.

Tip #2 How to reach max speed

In order to get max speed you need to have a full boost meter. The boost meter is the big coloured bar on the top of the screen. You can fill up the bar by jumping over cards, knocking out mafia men and collecting the coloured boosts items (they are the rectangle things, different colours give more chain boosts). You can also get boost by doing kung fu moves (knocking out mafia men or doing sick flips off a jump). You loose boost by hitting civilians, getting wiped out, colliding with walls and bumping into cars (and not getting wiped out). Last of all, you can get boosts by grinding on rails. If you keep failing a jump you should make liberal use of this to refill your meter as it's better than waiting for boost items and mafia to respawn.

I recommend that you prioritise filling up your boost meter as quickly as possible. The sooner you reach max speed the sooner you will reach the end.

Tip #3 Avoiding obstacles / what to do when you get stuck

Sometimes you are having a perfect run and then a random thing will happen like getting stuck behind a stage hazard or a truck. Other times you might find that a tram is hurtling towards you at break neck speed.

In either cases a drift turn will probably take too long. You can do a quick strafe to the left by pressing the x button and a quick strafe to the right using the circle button.

Tip #4 How to handle the poll mafia men consistently

These jerks have big polls and can whack you with a good range. Now your first instinct may be to duck under them with the trigger button. But if you do this too early then they will do a ground sweeper move that will still hit you. For this reason I would recommend that you just jump over / near the poll men instead. They don't really have a way to deal with this so you will find this to be a much more consistent way of dealing with them. In some cases you can do a mid air round house kick (with the move button) and still take them out.

Tip #5 Know when to and when not to grind

Grinding can be great for increasing your boost meter and collecting money to increase your score. But you can't peddle when your grinding and you are at risk of falling off and wiping out. So in many cases it may simply be faster to avoid the rail and peddle instead.

Tip #6 Know when to peddle

You can peddle to increase speed by waggling the move controller in front of you. Use this as much as you can. But bear in mind that the peddle animation must finish before you are able to jump, duck or roundhouse kick. So make sure you give you space these out correctly.

Tip #7 Find the best route

Each stage has branching paths. Some are better than others for various reasons. Like some may have more hazards or high value cash pickups. Others might have more chain boost pickups. But most importantly, some routes are just faster. Experiment with different routes in free roam mode. There is more than one way to get an S rank on a stage. Find what works for you and then refine it.

Tip #8 Use the best vehicle

The best vehicle in the game is the pro stool / chair. It has the best max speed, reasonable durability (admittedly not the best) and decent handling. This can be unlocked by getting 10 collectibles in the last free roam stage. This stage can be unlocked by getting D rank on all the other stages. I would recommend that you prioritise unlocking this before you start aiming for S ranks on the other stages.
