GTA San Andreas: The Trophy Journey

With the recent announcement of the GTA 6 trailer coming soon, I thought it would be a good time to try and platinum the three games in the GTA trilogy. I started with San Andreas, purely because it was downloaded the fastest. Before I properly get into the journey for the platinum, here is some basic information about the game.

Getting Started (89.21% Common)

The first trophy that we got on San Andreas was a pretty basic one, after watching a few cutscenes and a pretty standard opening mission, we were awarded the getting started trophy for completing the “Big Smoke” mission.

Pay’n’Spray (69.76% Common)

Shortly after reuniting with our friends from back home, we were right back into our gang activity (I sound so cool right now). And our latest crime had us on the run from the cops, to escape them, we used the Pay’n’Spray. The Pay’n’Spray is essentially a garage you can enter, which for $100 repaints your car a different colour so that the police don’t recognise the car that you are driving. We used this masterful escape plan to pick up this trophy, and it definitely was not because the game forced me to.

After completing some more early missions, we found ourselves quite low on health. In GTA San Andreas, to heal yourself you need to go to a restaurant to buy food, so this is exactly what I did. And since the other members of the gang ridiculed me for being too skinny, we decided to have a big lunch. To be honest, I got this trophy simply through luck, as I just happened to be in Cluckin’ Bell and I just happened to buy meals until the trophy popped. I had no clue it was even a trophy.

Now, after eating 8 meals what is the best thing you can do? Go to the gym? Go on a walk? Nope. Eat more until you are morbidly obese of course! So that is what I decided to do to get this next trophy…. And it kind of took me a while afterwards to figure out how to get my guys weight back down, so I was kind of just waddling around for the next few hours of gameplay.

Eating can be tiring work, so I decided to have a little break by doing some crime. The usual. This time, we were stealing a sound truck belonging to some random girl and a guy from South London. To impress them into letting me get in the van, I first had to show them my insane dance moves. So that’s what I did. There was a little dancing minigame but it was really easy, 30 seconds later not only can I continue with the mission, but also I’m celebrating the trophy.

After this, I was getting a little bored of doing missions over and over, so I tried to complete some side trophies. I made a first attempt at the “Yes I Speak English” trophy, where you have to complete 50 taxi fares, however I kinda may have made the taxi blow up and kill my passenger. Apparently, that wasn’t the correct thing to do. I did try to make things up to society though by attempting to become a vigilante for the “What The City Needs” trophy, but I failed at that too. Somehow though, I had been messing around trying to do these trophies for so long that the trophy for not committing any crimes for 24 hours popped. And I have to say I love the attention to detail in the trophy description, “Go 24 hours (in game) without committing any crime”. It’s like the devs are just sitting there like, crimes in real life? That’s fine, just not in the game please.

Horror Of The Santa Maria (40.20% Uncommon)

It was now time to continue doing some missions, and I ran into the first mission with a missable trophy, “Madd Dogs Rhymes”. Essentially, we had to break into Madd Dogs recording studio to steal his rhyme book to help out our friend and wannabe rapper, OG Loc. And let me tell you, he really needed the help. To score an extra trophy, we had to do all this entirely with stealth kills, while not being spotted at all by any of the security guards at Madd Dogs mansion. This was difficult, not because of the task, but because of how inconsistent it was to actually perform a stealth kill. I would press the same buttons each time and a different action would happen. Each time that I failed, I would stand still to be killed by the guards, however once I failed on the last guard, so I drowned in a swimming pool to restart, getting this trophy for drowning.

After continuous attempts (1 Hour 30 Minutes worth), finally I managed to get the trophy for completing the mission while only using stealth kills. It did take a while, but the whole time I was making steady progress. The hardest part was getting past the bar, once you took out the first three guards, there were two more in a room together, one was behind a bar making drinks, and the other playing video games, probably trying to platinum Slyde. However, as soon as you walked around the corner, there was a 50/50 chance of the guard behind the bar seeing you instantly. This did make things a bit infuriating, but we persevered for the trophy.

We continued through the story, and warning spoilers ahead. But, we did a lot, I’m talking, illegal street races, getting a girlfriend after we accidentally locked a girl in a burning building (Which we also may or may not have set on fire in the first place), interrupted an arms deal between the russians and the Ballers (One of our rival gangs), and more. However, we then got a phone call from our sisters boyfriend, he was desperate to meet up, so we did. Once we got there he showed us that two of our closest friends, Ryder and Big Smoke, had been working with the Ballers behind our back. Not only that, but they had also set up an ambush on our brother Sweet. We drove across town to help Sweet fight off the ambush, we were successful, but we were soon arrested, which was when this trophy popped.

Away from the story and missions now, this trophy was simply for buying a house. When driving past some apartments near Verona Beach, I bought an apartment for $10,000 giving me this easy trophy.

Buying a house is a big achievement, so I went out to celebrate by doing what any normal person would do, betting. So I made my way down to the betting shop, and to get this trophy all I needed to do was bet on the correct horse in a race… I genuinely bet on the favourite 8 times in a row and it came DEAD LAST every time. But like a cat, I used my 9th life on the favourite again and finally won to get this trophy and 200 out of my 800 lost dollars back.

We continued through the story though, and we got hooked up with Catalina, who is absolutely crazy. We do a couple of jobs with her, until she decides to move to Liberty City with her new mute boyfriend. As a parting gift, she leaves us with an empty garage after we beat her boyfriend in a race. This leads us to recruiting a team to run the garage, which in turn leads us to driving school, which we technically didn’t have to do but I still did to get this trophy.

Who Needs Directions? (26.81% Uncommon)

Now I will admit, this is a trophy I knew about prior to starting the game, purely because of videos from popular trophy hunters that I have watched. So I can’t really show off getting it in my first playthrough of the game ever. But basically, remember Ryder and Big Smoke? Well it turns out they’re secretly part of a group involved in smuggling, while trying to break into the group, we start helping out some of the members. Low and behold, a van full of goods is taken, with one of the guys friends in the back. Luckily, he had his phone with him and he phones up asking for help, this trophy is awarded for driving directly to where he has been taking, without guessing incorrectly.

What Happens In Las Venturas… (35.95% Uncommon)

This trophy came a little bit after the previous, and without spoiling too much of the story, we essentially had to break into a crack lab and stop the operation. To do this we rigged a car with a bomb, which we could detonate at any time. Then we drove into the lab and blew it up, before making our escape via stunt jump after the main entrance was locked off.

Okay, now I break the fourth wall and ask you. If you just blew up a whole drug operation, how would you celebrate? Here’s my answer, I went to the casino and put it all on red… all being $100 because to bet on higher tables I need to get my gambling skill up, but red won so I got this trophy at least.

While at the casino, I took a bit of time to level up my gambling to be able to play the wheel of fortune game. The aim of the game for this trophy is to make 1000$ off of a single spin, it is pretty easy, the hard part was levelling up my gambling skill. This was because my gambling skill got glitched and didn’t go up, all I could find online was people hedging their bets on roulette, I tried this for 30 minutes, spending $20,000 (People online said it would take $5,000) but nothing happened. I instead played blackjack for a little while until it finally let me play the game needed for the trophy.

They Can’t Stop All Of Us (25.79% Uncommon)

The third and final missable trophy in GTA: San Andreas is this one. And to be honest, this is probably my favourite mission so far. Basically, one of our crazy friends who is always high wants us to help him steal a secret project from a secret government area, area 69. We successfully do so, breaking in and stealing a $60,000,000 jetpack. To get the trophy though, we had to do so without setting off any alarms, which we did on only our second attempt.

After breaking into a military protected area, I spent 2 and a half hours trying to figure out how to get a key card I needed to complete the next mission in the story… a task that should have taken 5 minutes but my game glitched. I decided to cheer myself up by getting this trophy for completing 50 taxi fares.

I continued on after my taxi fun, completing a bunch of side missions to be able to progress further in the main storyline. Eventually, I had done all side missions needed to unlock the next main mission, in this mission I flew to Liberty City to exterminate a rival gangs bistro. The mission was honestly the easiest in the game so far, took me no longer than 30 seconds, and this trophy popped at the end of it.

At this point of the game, we had returned to Los Santos for what I was presuming was the end of the game. To celebrate being back home, I visited the basketball court to try and get this trophy, where you have one minute to score 30 points in basketball, however every shot you score you gain five seconds additional time. Obviously, being the son of Michael Jordan and Steph Curry (Don’t ask about logistics) I completed this first time, with about 10 seconds spare.

And this is it, well for the story trophies anyway. This trophy is for completing the final mission of GTA: San Andreas, and it was a brilliant mission to end it all. Honestly one of the best, maybe the best mission. Now it’s time to clean up.

Step one of the cleanup was to be going through all the vehicle side missions. As I had already completed the taxi fare missions, I started with the firefighter missions. To get this trophy I had to complete 12 levels of a firefighter mini game where I had to drive around putting out fires under a time limit.

I continued through the vehicle related trophies, this time I was picking injured people up in an ambulance and dropping them off at the local hospital. Again there was a time limit, as well as 12 levels to complete.

Original Gangster (24.24% Uncommon)

After completing these side missions, I decided to work a little bit on gang territories. Essentially, controlling every gang territory in the game is the hardest thing needed to do for the platinum, you need to find a rival gangs area, start a gang war there and win it… 53 times… and the entire time they could start a gang war in one of your areas and potentially win it back. After a little bit of grinding, I popped this trophy for gaining maximum respect, which you gain by killing police and rival gang members.

Bike Or Biker (23.05% Uncommon)

Back to a bronze trophy now. And this was a very fun trophy to get. Around the map, there are spots to complete time trials on bikes or motorbikes, these essentially consist of tricks and jumps which you have a very short amount of time to complete. Once you manage to complete one of these, you get this trophy.

Next I decided to get one of the long(ish) grinds out of the way. To get this trophy you need to export 3 lists of 10 vehicles. The way this works is as follows, you check a list at the docks to see the cars you need to collect, after that you need to bring one car back at a time and put them on a ship via crane to be exported. I did all 30 to get this trophy.

What The City Needs (21.44% Uncommon)

Next up was the final of the emergency vehicle missions. Prior to this I have completed the firefighter and ambulance missions, and this was the hardest. For this one I had to be a vigilante, driving around in a stolen police car and killing suspects, of course the actual police would be on my tail the whole time too, and there was still a time limit and 12 levels to get through.

Public Enemy No. 1 (21.05% Uncommon)

After completing the vigilante missions, I already had a 3 star wanted level and was in a tank. For me this was the perfect opportunity to kill 2 birds with 1 stone and also get the 6 star wanted level. So I drove down to the military base and blew everything up for a couple of minutes, and that did the job.

Chick Magnet (19.38% Rare)

This trophy was an easy one that I forgot I still had left. To get this trophy you need to max out your sex appeal, which according to my unc- actually I won’t finish that. Anyway, to achieve maximum sex appeal, you need to dress nicely, buy some chains, put on a little bit of muscle and steal a sports car. Pretty easy stuff for this late in the platinum.

After maxing out my sex appeal, next I wanted to max out all my weapons. The best way to do this is to park two cars in CJ’s garage, and continuously shoot them and repair them by letting the garage shut. It is a little bit time consuming having to do this for 10 different weapons but a gold trophy is the perfect reward for getting it done.

Ain’t Nothing But A G Thing (18.73% Rare)

We now enter the back stretch of trophies, the long ones that take ages and are a real pain. I started off with this one, in which I needed to control all gang territories, own all properties and have one million dollars in the bank. To begin, I went for all gang territories (Which was a real pain). This took hours, I needed to get all 53 gang territories around Los Santos. Now how do you get a gang territory you ask? You first have to drive to the territory and kill 3 gang members, then you face 3 waves of gang members COD zombies style and you have to survive all 3 rounds to get that territory, and when I did manage to complete it, my game crashed before I could save it and I had to do it all over again. After this, I had to own all properties, which was pretty easy, and the trophy was finished off by getting to a million dollars, which I achieved when going for this next trophy.

This is the penultimate trophy of the game, for me at least. It is achieved by dating all 6 possible girlfriends in the game. Each girlfriend has their own specific taste in men, which basically means you need to put on muscle or lose muscle etc etc for each girlfriend. The only way around this is by collecting all oysters, which is what I did and why I left this trophy so late. However, I did again encounter a glitch trying to get this trophy, as the game didn’t let me end dates. I was basically stuck driving around with the girlfriend in my car. I tried killing myself but nothing changed, eventually I had to reload an old save again to get these done.

Final Thoughts:

All in all, I really enjoyed San Andreas as a game. The story was really good, and with it being my first time playing the game, I enjoyed it twice as much. My only issues with the game come in the form of how annoying it is as a platinum grind. I faced multiple glitches along the way, and with how rare checkpoints were in some missions too, I felt like half my time on the game was replaying parts of the game I had already played. Overall, I score GTA: San Andreas a 6.5/10, although this would be higher if there were less glitches.

But basically, after a couple of missions we start tracking down Kraken, the kind of big boss of the game, we find out he is hunting different reformed supervillains, in an attempt to save one of them, Spider-Man is hurt badly, somehow he is saved though, via venom from his friend Harry (Who basically needs the venom to stay alive). This turns Spider-Mans suit black, and grants this trophy.

He then goes on a rampage and fights Kraven to the death. After this boss fight and the subsequent cutscene, the trophy popped.

And honestly, the story was absolutely fantastic. I feel like these Marvel games keep upping the bar with every release, and this was no different. With the main story out of the way, it was time now for the clean-up.

I really enjoyed this game, it was absolutely fantastic. The storyline was so in depth, with hidden messages to previous games hidden throughout. Even at the end there’s a little cutscene hinting at a third and final instalment of Spider-Man. I enjoyed every moment of the platinum, and there wasn’t really a point that made me annoyed or consider giving up. Overall, I would score Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 an 8/10.

After that we met Ken Rosenburg, a character I had already met in San Andreas (Which is set 6 years after the events of this game). To continue our rise through the criminal scene, we did a couple of jobs for him, and it was during these jobs we found out that he was potentially the man responsible for the events of the start of the game. But, we finished our jobs with him anyway to earn this trophy.

He lets us know that Lance, a random guy we made friends with, is being held hostage by Ricardo Diaz’s men after he tried attacking Diaz. During this, we somehow managed to get a wanted level, luckily for me there are stars throughout the game that if you hit reduce your wanted level. Doing this for the first time gave me this trophy.

This was the first trophy that annoyed me a little bit. Not because of how hard it was, or because of it being a bad mission. Because it was probably my favourite mission so far. But the problem I had was the waypoints, in this mission, you are tasked to steal back a bike belonging to Mitch Baker. But, the waypoint to start the mission takes you to the middle of a street. Standing where you are told to does nothing. This was annoying but I persevered and searched the entire area until I found where I had to go and completed the mission for this trophy.

The whole reason behind the last trophy is that we were trying to get protection services for a Scottish band called Love Fist. However, things still didn’t go to plan, as the limo we were using to get the band to their event had been rigged to explode, we had to stay driving at high speeds while the band figured out how to diffuse it. Once successful, we got the trophy.

Once I had finished scavenging for money; I was able to complete the final two missions of the game. There I found out Sonny (A guy we used to work for who we owe millions of dollars) had teamed up with our buddy Lance, to try and kill us and take back what we owed him. After defending our mansion from waves of enemies, battling Lance on a rooftop and Sonny in the hallways of the mansion, we finished the story of Vice City, and got rewarded with this trophy.

This was admittedly a trophy I had purposely made some progress on while getting the taxi trophy earlier, but I didn’t think I was as close as I was, so the trophy popping was a surprise.

To get the trophy, I had to traverse from rooftop to rooftop via motorbike without falling off. I can’t say the reason why because I would probably get banned, but I did it for the trophy.

For sunshine autos, one of the assets you can buy, you are given a list of cars to find to increase the amount of revenue made by the business. Very similar to GTA: San Andreas (I know it came out before San Andreas, I have just played SA previously). It was easier though, as a lot of the cars spawned quite nearby to the auto shop. Collect all four lists of cars and you get the trophy.

I then moved onto some of the vehicle missions, which were standard for these older GTA games. I had to do them in San Andreas and when I go for GTA 3 I will have to go through them again. This time round, this trophy was a lot more seamless for me, as I completed it on my first attempt.

From ambulance driver to fire department guy, (I’m tired that’s the best you’re getting). This trophy was for extinguishing 10 fires while doing the fire department missions. This was pretty easy, although when I made the mistake of doing them in gang territory, I was having to defend my fire truck from swarms of gang members whilst simultaneously putting out fires, since it seemed like the gang members just wanted people's cars to explode.

After doing these missions, I thought I would go for some collectables. Collectables are something I am horrible with, I always make a mistake when going for them, whether it’s marking the wrong one off or just forgetting to mark one off that I have already gotten. However, this time was different (For a short while). As I had absolutely zero problem getting the first 34 of 35 stunt jumps. The issue was with the very last one. If you remember earlier, there was a missable trophy where I had to complete a mission without falling off the rooftops. To do this I was using the stunt jumps, so I marked them all off as complete. For some reason the game didn’t count one of them as complete, so I had to go back and redo it, but it was worth it.

This trophy is my enemy. For this you had to complete a 30 second wheelie. Honestly I think I would rather drink a pot of hot sauce while a sumo wrestler peeled off each of my toenails one by one than do this trophy again. It was just stupid, when I tried on the beach Tommy would randomly go flying in the air, when I tried on the airport runway I ran out of room. And sometimes it didn’t even count a wheelie as a wheelie. After about 3 hours of non-stop wheelies, I finally managed to get one that was 30 seconds.

Now, I know earlier I mentioned how horrible I am with collectables, but on this set of them I was flawless. For this trophy, I had to collect 100 hidden packages that were scattered around the map, the more you unlock, the more rewards you get; such as free guns, tanks spawning etc etc. And for like the first time ever, I got all of them without missing a single one.

Completing the hidden packages gave me access to tanks. So, what would any sane person do after unlocking tanks? Go on a killing rampage obviously. I genuinely think I broke a record for the fastest time to achieve a 6 star wanted level, it honestly felt like I had gone from walking the dog to hiding out in a hut waiting for the FBI to blow the door off in about 10 seconds. But it was worth getting the wanted level for the trophy.

After getting the wanted level I didn’t stop though, I kept it going for as long as I could, and I achieved this trophy for causing $1,000,000 worth of property damage. Obviously nothing compared to the amount of property damage I have committed in real life (allegedly).

After all of this I still had two trophies left to achieve. This one's for reaching maximum media attention. This being 1800, after 100%ing the game I only had 700. How is that even possible. Anyway all I had to do was steal a tank and blow stuff up so I didn’t mind.

This is the trophy that puts people off of getting platinum in this game. Similarly to the previous trophy, I had to achieve maximum criminal rating. This threshold was 100,000 points and having $10,000,000 in the bank. At the time of 100% completion of the game I had 28,000 points and 700,000 dollars in the bank account. Normally, people would complete the “cone crazy” glitch to achieve this trophy. So I did too. Well, I say glitch, it isn’t really a glitch, let me explain. Everytime you beat your high score on the cone crazy minigame, your end prize is doubled. Starting at $200 for the first time you beat your high score, and going up infinitely. Having more money in the bank account also gives more criminal rating points. So I completed cone crazy over and over until I had $104,857,000 in the bank, and that was when this trophy popped.

This game was interesting, the story was good, but it felt really fast. There weren’t many missions that were actually difficult, and I finished the story in 2 days. Which compared to the 2 weeks I spent on the cleanup just goes to show how easy the story part of this game is. There were a lot of glitches and crashes, similarly to GTA: San Andreas, and to be honest it just felt like a worse game than its GTA counterpart. Overall, I am going to score GTA: Vice City a 5.5/10.

The first step, like in any game, was to play through the story mode. In Death Squared, there is a story mode and a party mode. Essentially these are just code names for 2 player mode and 4 player mode. If you ever secretly played firegirl vs waterboy at the back of an ICT lesson in school, then you pretty much are already a professional at this game. And it was because of my personal experience with that game that I flew through the story mode of this game. While there are video guides for each level available on YouTube, I only used them once or twice throughout the 80 levels I needed to complete to finish the story. You do regularly get trophies throughout celebrating your current progress, so they were a nice morale boost. Once I finished the story the credits rolled, and it is important to note that you can’t skip them because watching them all is a trophy.

Step 2: Party Mode.

There aren’t as many trophies available for the party mode, this I presume is because this mode is shorter than the story mode, consisting of 40 levels compared to 80 in the story mode. However, just because it is a shorter mode does not mean it is easier. In fact, for me the story mode was almost a warm-up for the party mode. The controls were a lot more confusing here, and the levels were a lot more complex. We saw it out though.

This was the first trophy I got on the game, and you get it for skipping the intro to the story mode. I’m not sure if not skipping it locks you out of the trophy, but judging by the percentages it does seem like a lot of people really enjoy watching intros.

I completed the 3 and 6 ones while just playing the game naturally. Admittedly I never went 9 in a row without dying, but that’s fine, because I just went back to the first 9 levels of the game and got the trophy by completing those levels without dying.

This game was okay. Nothing brilliant, and to be honest if I wasn’t fixated on getting the platinum trophy I probably wouldn’t have finished it. I do like playing puzzle games in the evening after spending a lot of time on a story based game. There isn’t really much I can say about this game though to be honest, so I am just going to score it a 4.5/10.
