The game kept switching to offline every time I went into the grindhouse, neither I, nor the guy I was boosting with could connect to each other after accepting the invite. The solution was to start a map in grindhouse solo. Invite the other person ingame, finish the level (without the compete challenge) and after you go back to grindhouse menu together you can do the compete challenges.
