With the arrival of 2014 comes the knowledge and anticipation that some major games will be arriving within the year, and two of the biggest games are coming from Nintendo in the form of Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS. Many fans of the franchise are excited about the prospect of putting Mario up against the likes of Mega Man, Sonic, and whatever other characters will eventually join the fray, but one particular option that’s kept users engaged in past iterations is the ability to collect trophies.

The option to build a trophy collection will return in the new Super Smash Bros. games, but the collections that can be assembled will vary dramatically depending on which platform gamers pick up Smash for. According to franchise director and creator, Masahiro Sakurai, there will be different trophies based on portable and console specific games – allowing correlation between the games and the lineage of their respective systems.

“There will be trophies in the 3DS and Wii U games, and each version will boast different types and models. The 3DS trophies will be mainly from handhelds and the Wii U version will feature trophies from the home-console games.”

As many fans are likely well aware, trophies won’t be the only thing that’s different between the two versions. Sakurai revealed during E3 2013 that both games will feature different stages that will vary depending on the origins of each platform – with stages based on existing handheld games coming to the 3DS and battlefields based on home console titles hitting the Wii U.

There is quite a bit of unique content between both Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS, but it’s the sharing abilities that the games will have that could prove the most interesting. It’s confirmed that both games will be able to link up and interact somehow, but Sakurai hasn’t gone into specifics yet. Whether this means that trophies, stages, or something else entirely can be transferred remains to be seen.

I always like it when the console version is different from the handheld version of a game.

i don't know but, i don't own any of these two system but it would be better if they allow you to transfer your 3DS data to your Wii U to have every single trophy you got on 3DS on your Wii U as the main gallery for all of the SSB trophies as long as you have both systems. you know, it's better to have everything in one place, so you don't have to turn on your 3DS just to look for it's trophies collection and Wii U for it's own.

Kinda like Cross Saves with the PS3/Vita? I like the idea, but I don't think Nintendo will be doing that any time soon.  I mean, they just made an actual account system with the Wii U, and are backwards with online in plenty of other aspects.
