Can I spend the boatman coins or save it?

Hello! I'm currently doing my first run on the game and saving as much boatman coins as I can for the trophies related to this collectable.
But I'm facing some difficulties, even playing on Casual, due my characters' low HP. I was thinking to purchase some upgrade at Vulgrim, but here's my question:
For the 350 boatman coin trophy, does it count the coins I have spend already, or should I save until this trophy pop, and then I can spend them on shops?

There is an in game challenge that tracks the amount of Boatman coins that you collect. Spending Boatman coins does not negatively affect this total count. I also spent my coins during my playthrough and it popped when the in game challenge completed.

 

In other words, yes, you can spend the coins if you wish without having to worry about "missing" the trophy. They're more than 350 coins (500 I think) to collect if you're really worried about it.
