Santa Cruz (sea battle)

I finished the mission with all my ships alive, only lost 26 aircraft, got 10 death from above, but still only got 2 stars.

 

Any tips?

Can you actually destroy the 2nd carrier?

 

How is 3 stars even possible on this mission

As far as I remember. I got 3 stars on that mission. In order to get 3 with less casualties, you need to destroy the enemy's aircraft carrier and sink most of it's escort ships. Use sea mines as possible from the destroyers. 

 

I found this on playstationtrophies.com. Copy paste it. 

 

"Mission 4: Battle of Santa Cruz
    Naval combat is new in Sudden Strike 4. This mission is likely the hardest mission in the DLC to get 3 Stars as it will take a few attempts. The objective is to destroy one US Carrier. Once one Carrier is destroyed the mission will end. Use the Army Doctrine for its Naval mines. When you start the mission immediately pause the game, select both carriers, and have both send bombers to the Cruiser in the first group on the left side of the map, then send bombers to the Destroyers when you can. Have your Destroyers move straight then have half of them go left and the other right. Have your Cruisers follow them to provide cover against enemy planes. Your Destroyers will be dropping mines throughout the map and form a dome-like shape around your side of the map. The enemy will be moving towards you except for the Carriers themselves. You want to lose zero ships, while destroying everyone of theirs, saving a Carrier for last. This will get you 3 Stars.
    For Challenge mode, choose the Navy Doctrine for the bonus bomber damage. This time simply make a mad dash to the enemy Carrier at the top left. When the mission starts, immediately send bombers to it. When you manage to get close to the Carrier, use torpedoes to destroy it."
