Sometimes dying can lose us a lot of money.

This was originally posted on another website.  Thought of sharing this here as well so as to avoid any disappointments when playing in Insane difficulty.  Watch out for areas that do not have an outhouse as discussed in detail below:

Some say 'do not worry about dying' when in fact we SHOULD be mindful of it.  Depending on how much money is banked, we could lose up to $60,000 when DeathSpank dies.  This can happen in areas or rooms that DO NOT have an Outhouse, even the Out of Order (Ox3) ones.

If we die in these type of rooms then we spawn outside of it, at the last outhouse (auto-save) we had triggered.  Which means the money we drop in the previous room will de-spawn and will be lost forever.

Rainbow's End is like this.  Coming from the casino going out triggers the Ox3 Outhouse by the main entrance door from inside.  If we die outside the casino (by those horde of gangster leprechauns) without touching or triggering the Casino Outhouse (the one before Freen the quest-giver), then we lose a considerable amount of money since we respawn back inside the casino.  Coming from the outside will not be a problem as we automatically trigger one (of the two) Ox3 Outhouse as we come in.  It is when we go outside that can be a problem if we do not trigger an Outhouse autosave - like the mission Intimidate Monks given by the Mob Boss Leprechaun

Another way we can lose money is during the missions also given by Mob Boss

  • Fix Slot Machine that requires us to enter the Slots Dungeon which does not have an Outhouse inside.
  • Get Entertainer Disguise where we are task by Freen to collect materials from Elvis impersonators inside the Kingly Dungeon, a room also without an Outhouse inside.

If we die then we will most likely respawn by the Mob Boss Outhouse which is outside of these rooms.  Whatever we drop in these two dungeons will be lost.

The same goes for the Boss Battle inside the entertainment Stage.  It can be a bit tricky when facing the boss on Insane difficulty as the enemies can be very cheap with their attacks.  So we might as well spend the money on major potions and stock up with throwables, orbs and buffs since we will lose that money anyway.

Other locations such as the Well Spring Island cave is also a place where we can die and lose money.

Spoiler

I tried doing a double manual save with the first one keeping the money and consumable items in a pre-battle state and the second manual save with the recorded death and the money and/or item losses.  But for some reason after reloading the good save from the dashboard, it does not show the pre-battle save data and instead loads up the bad one.

The best way to deal with this is to teleport to a different area and make a manual save there (I prefer the starting area) to give the save file a different thumbnail (good back-up save), then teleport back to the casino and make a save on a different slot (as the current/playable save file) which then keeps a different thumbnail.  This prevents any confusion when reloading the good back-up to replace the bad one.

I am quite miffed as of writing this because I came in Rainbow's End with $170,000... now I am just left with freaking $37,000 - that is a lot of loss to just be sweeping it under the carpet or just think of charging it to experience.  Super-crossed is an understatement.

EDIT: In Hell's Half Acre (this being near the end-game) dying with $300,000 in the bank leaves us with only $240,000 ($60,000 loss or 20% decrease). Upon further testing with $840,000 banked, we lose a whopping $170,000 (20% decrease) when we are left with only $670,000 upon respawn.

I do not think this was a coding oversight on Hothead's part, this was surely done on purpose.

... we drop 20% of our money every time DeathSpank dies...
