Problem with my left stick or problem with the game?

So I've been playing this on Vita, and it has a nasty quirk...I'll be holding my left stick to walk forward...and every so often the character will jerk back and change to walk in the opposite direction. It suddenly feels like you shifted to inverted controls for left and right. They'll keep walking that way until I let go on the stick for a split second before turning them back around. Which in this game it usually means I take a hit because of it. 

 

This doesn't seem to happen in other games, I've only seen it so aggressively in this, so I was hoping it was just a weird issue with the game. However trying to look this up first...it's not looking like it. I was playing Touch My Katamari before this and I don't recall it happening in that game, but that could have also been the culprit...twin stick movement.
