Jackboy Gadget problem

I try to control the enemies, sometimes it works, but the other half of the time as soon as I release L2 they just turn round and shoot me, and I can't figure out what I'm doing differently. Why is this happening?

When you are using Jack Boy to control an enemy, you have to hold on to L2. Letting go of it will almost always result in getting your clone killed.

Nah, I held on to it a bit longer, still same results, just as varied... or I didn't release, in which case he'll eventually turn round and shoot me anyway. I hate this useless gadget. Until I can figure it out, I'm going to do other missions and rescue clones from levels previously beaten... this makes no sense.

Ok, nevermind this, I've finally figured out myself why it wasn't working. I went back to the tutorial level, and I remember it saying "Release inside the filled area", which wasn't terribly clear... then I realized after a bit of experimenting, that what I had to do was release when the line that goes round the bar above was in the filled area, that is what they meant. I've gotta say, I did have a feeling all along this was likely to be a case of me being dumb...
