Rage requires 22GB of HDD Space

This year's Quakecon has just ended, and John Carmack, co-founder of id and technical director, spoke for a good 90 minutes in his Keynote, more Importantly, he revealed a startling bit of information about the upcoming Rage; It will require an install of atleast 20GB on the Xbox 360 Hard Drive. There's no denying that this is a Gold Mine of space.

“On the 360 we don’t have a partial install option; it’s all or nothing, which is kind of unfortunate. It means you have to install 21/22GB of stuff which takes a long time but if you’ve got it and you play it on the 360 that’s the way to go.”

Along with this revelation, Carmack also stated that the Blu-Ray has worse latency than the DVD, on the PS3 stating;

“Once you get everything from memory that works pretty good, but if you’re coming straight from the hard drive then the first time you walk into everything from the DVD or from the Blu-ray – even worse in terms of total latency time – you listen to that Blu-ray churning around as its pulling everything in.”

It just goes to show how much time and effort id have put into their title, and the media surrounding it has proved that, showcasing stunning visuals, thanks to the id Tech 5 engine, plus having a huge amount of content packed in there. This is defintely an ambitious project.

Ofcourse, this isn’t the first time that a game has required a large investment of HDD space on the Xbox 360, a few other games come to mind, such as Lost Odyssey requiring 4 disks, and LA Noire eating up a total of 3 disks. It goes without saying, if studios continue to push consoles to the limits with games like Rage, then Microsoft may need to think about changing their game plan.

So if you are looking to pick up this game for Xbox 360, then you better check to make sure you have some extra space unattended. Prepare to hit the wasteland on October 4th this year.

Yep, this is old news. (No offense, but the whole "Rage is huge" thing isn't new.)

The interesting part of the story is that the Xbox 360 version of the game is an inferior port, because Microsoft charge so heavily for publishers to have multi-disc games (because it makes their decision to use DVDs bad, which it was, so go figure), and as a result of this, Rage's content is being slashed to fit on two DVDs instead of three, because they can't afford to have it on three.

Add in the fact that the required install means it can't be played on old SKUs of the 360 and you're looking at a game that you don't want to own on the 360.

Sadly, knowing how these things go, the PS3 port will probably be arse too. The PC version will be the one to get, I have no doubt, unless they console-ify it and ruin it that way.
