Found a great video on how to use your own hunter to measure crown sizes for the various elder dragons:

 

 

Hope this helps and, of course, try to do higher difficulty investigations 1 faint/15 min/3 tries for increased crown chances.

Thanks for the video.  I was 180 hours in and still couldn't eyeball if a monster was smaller or larger than usual. But after watching your video ive had a pretty good idea when i come across one.

You can do this multiplayer if you want to, although personally I'd recommend starting solo and measuring the monster before deciding whether or not you want to fire an SOS if you want help killing it.

 

...whatever you do, don't fire off an SOS if its a single faint quest. Someone WILL cart and cost you your crown. It's inevitable.

 

 

This video has been insanely helpful, but...does anyone have a way to measure Nergigante? I got one yesterday that was 49 out - 49! - and I couldn't really tell the difference between it and any other.

I feel your pain my smallest nerg is 12 or 18 pounds to big I forget which.
