The NeoGeo X, the handheld NeoGeo platform, is no more. SNK Playmore, the owner of the NeoGeo hardware, terminated its license with manufacturer and distributor Tommo Inc. effective Oct. 2, according to this notice on SNK's web site.P

That means the end of the NeoGeo X Gold Limited Edition, and six volumes of games (NeoGeo X Mega Pack Vol. 1, and NeoGeo X Classics Vols. 1 through 5) are done. Tommo has been ordered to immediately cease "all manufacturing, distribution, marketing & promotion and selling" of these products.P

Additionally, SNK has ordered Tommo to immediately cease sales of the NeoGeo X Arcade Stick and remove all stock from retailers, both physical and online.P

It doesn't sound like this was an amicable breakup. "In order to protect our intellectual property rights such as 'NEOGEO' and 'SNK', decisive measures will be taken against all unapproved NEOGEO X products not subject to the License Agreement."P

SNK Orders NeoGeo X Maker to End Production and Stop Selling It

The NeoGeo X, the handheld NeoGeo platform, is no more. SNK Playmore, the owner of the NeoGeo hardware, terminated its license with manufacturer and… Read…

On the weekend, SNK issued a press release saying that the Neo Geo X handheld - a re-release of the company's famous home console - was done for. Only a few days later, the company licensing the handheld from SNK says nope, we'll keep selling it.

In case you couldn't tell from the original SNK presser that this wasn't an amicable break-up, you will now after reading the subsequent release sent to us by Neo Geo X makers Tommo (emphasis mine).

Tommo, Inc., today responded to the press release that appeared on the SNK PLAYMORE USA Corp website last week. Tommo, Inc. denies that any breach of contract exists in their agreement with SNK PLAYMORE USA Corp and are continuing to support and market the popular NEOGEO X GOLD entertainment system, its accessories, and games. Due to the popularity of the system, Tommo and SNK extended the agreement earlier this year until 2016.Tommo fully expects this agreement to be honored by all parties. To date, Tommo has performed all of its obligations under its license agreement with SNK and is disappointed by SNK’s sudden and unjustified termination of the agreement.Tommo has demanded that SNK retract its press release and any attempts to terminate the license agreement.

Reading between the lines, you can see SNK demanded Tommo cease manufacturing, marketing and selling the units. Tommo's reply, meanwhile, suggests the company will simply keep selling (and marketing) any and all units it has left.

Either way, it's going to get messy. But hey, great incidental marketing move; nothing says "hurry buy now!" more than "this product may soon never ever exist ever again".

Meant to post this last night, but PSNP was down.

Looks like the Neo Geo X isn't going down without a fight.  Though, I thought there was a console version of this too, is that unaffected? I think it's still under the same umbrella, but all I've heard about with this is the handheld...
