Shield Parry Question

It's a weird thing to bring up, as I know the shields can parry and that you need one to parry. But the thing is, when I switched shields to a different shield, holding down L2 doesn't parry and instead, puts my samurai character into their stance mode. So, do some shields not let you parry or something like that?

Technically yes--only shields that have the Parry ability trigger it with L2, and they "override" your weapon's ability, so when you switched to a shield with no ability at all, L2 then triggered the Unsheathe ability on your RH weapon instead. You can see which ability will be triggered with L2 immediately above your loadout at the bottom-left while playing normally.
