No. So make sure to max out their weapon before that point.

 

Though if you're at the point where he is at the bedside then you can actually talk to him and swap him into your party.

I know this is a somewhat old post and you're probably done with the game, but the info here is incorrect. So for anyone else coming to this page:

Rozalia confused Cristopher with Wilhelm. Cristopher only very briefly leaves the party while he is sick, he returns after you cure him. Wilhelm dies so can't come back (it's his weapon you want to upgrade first). JKR will also leave briefly. When he does, you can eventually get him back in one of the end game ruins.
