Mini-Guide & Complexity

Liberated is a 2d action shooter/stealth game set in the panels of a graphic novel, detailing a dystopian society that we must navigate and survive.

Difficulty: 2/10

Playthroughs: 2

Hours: 4

Stage 1: Chapters 1-4

Each chapter has at least one trophy tied to it for doing something special within that chapter. The only thing you should keep in mind across all four of them is to shoot every drone you see. If the drone flies to YOU, it'll explode and not count towards the trophy. There are maybe 18 drones in the game, so you'll have to play it a second time. If a drone happens to explode on you, then restart the checkpoint and make sure to shoot it instead.

For Chapter 1, there are three things: 1) you have to complete a QTE without failing. Yes, that's it. But, it's possibly the most ridiculously fast QTE I've ever seen - by a mile. This takes place at the end of the chapter and has a checkpoint directly after so if you fail, you'll have to restart the mission which is around 20-30 minutes. Fortunately, if you fail, you can pause it immediately after and go back to the menu, where you can "continue" from the top of the page. There are four button presses, and each one gets faster, until the last one which gives you half a second maybe. 2) you also have to from the police and survive. It's not hard, just remember to run and not surrender or you'll force yourself into another playthrough of the chapter. 3) once captured by the police (no matter what you chose to do), they'll ask you three questions. You have to answer arrogantly to all three. There are only three opportunities to answer questions in the game and they're all in chapter 1

For Chapter 2, you have to find the collectibles. There are only 5 and while a couple of them may be slightly out of your way, they're not hard to find. I was able to find all five of them without a guide so you should be fine, but there is a guide available on Steam if you'd like to save yourself the risk.

For Chapter 3, you don't have to do anything special, just play. You'll get "BOOMSTICK" in this chapter naturally.

For Chapter 4, you have to vote pro-rebels and vote pro-government- usually this would take two playthroughs of the chapter but you can "continue" from the main menu and it'll allow you to restart the page. I'm not sure what makes either of these trophies pop but if you just vote (liking / disliking comments on what's essentially Facebook) as if you're a rebel or a representative, you should get the trophies.

Stage 2: Chapters 5 and 6 (Bonus Chapters)

Chapter 5 has literally nothing to do in it, just press X to advance the story.

Chapter 6 is short and sweet, just a little bit of required stealth, followed by chances to run and gun before the end. You'll get some opportunities to kill drones in this chapter so make sure to do that.

Stage 3: Replaying Chapters 1-3

The only reason we're replaying at this point is to kill drones. If you need more stealth kills, now's the time to do it. You should have gotten 50 Kills and most likely 50 Headshots by now but if not, make sure to do those as well.

And that's plat! Well done and thanks for playing small indie games

Yes. You obtain Barry (Survive the visit to Chinatown in Issue 01) by completing the four-button QTE at the end of Issue 01. This QTE is the platinum breaker for Liberated. The sequence is stupidly hard because:

A. the four button QTE pattern is always random, and

B. the last sequence gives players less than half a second to recognize and press the correct button.

Idk what the developers were thinking, but on Player difficulty, this single trophy is a 10/10. In fifteen years, Barry is honestly one of the dumbest trophies I have ever encountered. It has practically nothing to do with the narrative and the difficulty spike is completely out of sync with the rest of the game, killing the relaxed comic book vibe. All other QTEs have the same amount of time per button press, but the Barry QTE has a decreasing amount of time for each button press.

TWO TIPS TO MAKE BARRY EASIER

1. Press Options and change the difficulty from Player to Reader. Reader difficulty tends to repeat buttons in QTEs more frequently than Player difficulty.

2. I recommend backing up your save to a USB drive or the PSN Cloud in case you accidentally trigger the next checkpoint. If Barry becomes too much of a hassle, you can finish the rest of the trophies and come back to your USB save later.

OP suggests difficulty is 2/10? And the 3 stacks have a fairly high completion rate. I just bought this game in the sale cuz it looked cool, hmm I'm gonna expect it isn't that bad.

Edit: After starting the game and getting it, I wouldn't call it a platinum breaker, but it is off how strangely fast the last one is. It did take me about 10 tries to be honest, but with a cloud save in the right place (after playable scene with police in white with white helmets that take 2 headshots to kill, next comic strip that mentions general store, make a cloud save here. QTE will be in the bottom right square) then it's fine as you just keep trying till you get it taking about 1 min a go.

What I did is notice repeated patterns, then pre-emptively button mashed the final fast input ready when i saw a pattern i recognised. Not too bad took about 10 mins.

Game not bad, not totally thrilling but decently made with nice graphics, I always kinda enjoy these game inside a comic book types anyway 🙂

Hey esstee, did you lower the difficulty from Player to Reader? That makes a noticeable difference in providing a small pool of repeated patterns. If not, props to you. Player was exceptionally difficult for me because of that last randomized button press (less than a second). If you were able to discern patterns, you have an amazing ability. I was looking for patterns on Player and did not see them.

Looking at the trophy list on May 14, 2024, the percentage of players who completed Barry on PS5 is 25.33%. The platinum is also 25.33%. I'm not sure what you meant by "I wouldn't call it a platinum breaker". There is a 100% correlation with Barry being the final trophy for the platinum on PS5. While 25% completion rate (1/4) sounds high, that also means 75% (3/4) of players didn't or couldn't do it. I noticed the other stacks were as high as 43%.

I judge difficulty by how many attempts it takes to complete a trophy successfully. This evaluation method is mathematically objective, not subjective, and keeps me honest with myself. If something takes 10 attempts (or more), then, for me, it is a 10/10. When you wrote, "It took me 10 tries", that statement confirmed the difficulty. You are an Olympic-level trophy hunter, #47 in the UK and in the top 1000 for the entire world. You have 2100 games with 97% completion rate, 2062 games at 100% completion, platinums in Super Meat Boy, Wolfenstein II, I Am Bread, etc. - so when someone at that skill level states, "It took me 10 attempts", I know it is tough. The average gamer will probably double that number of attempts, at least on Player difficulty. That final button push has unnecessarily tight time constraints that are unlike anything else in the game.

Liberated is a cool game. Barry stinks. I'm glad you had fun. The comic art style was something I enjoyed too.

I havent played Wolfenstein II but thanks for saying my other stats are decent 😁

Yea I see what your saying though, we all play games differently, some more intuitively than others.

And yea I selected easy mode/'reader' from the start cuz I like a chill (start at least) experience these days, you're right maybe that makes a significant difference to Barry QTE patterns/success 🙂

I played EU which is around 40%-50% completion rate, significantly higher than the NA you state, so maybe there is also the chance there is a gameplay difference between regions might sound crazy but it has been proved several other games in the past.

But yea cool game glad I gave it a play, it could have been more exciting gameplay-wise but it was still good for what it was 🙂👍

Thank you for clarifying. Sorry about the Wolfenstein II, error but Super Meat Boy is on that level of skill.

In the beginning, I played Liberated on Player difficulty (which I assumed was the developer's term for 'Normal' difficulty). All was fine until I hit the Barry section, and then the difficulty spiked. The first two or three QTE button presses allowed sufficient time to react, but by the fourth button press, there was almost no time to react. I tried in vain to recognize patterns, but the sequences appeared random. After struggling, I remember having the brilliant idea of lowering the difficulty. Reader difficulty didn't provide more time to react (that I noticed) but the button sequences seemed more likely to repeat.

I totally agree with you that Liberated was good for what it was (other than the Barry trophy). I'm looking forward to Blacksad, another comic-esque noire adventure soon.
