What was the reason for having a dirty leaderboard years ago?

I recently read that PSNP use to have a 'dirty' leaderboard.

I checked the Wayback Machine and it looked interesting.
I was not around when the dirty leaderboard existed.

What was the original reason for having a dirty leaderboard before?

Was it a competition to see if the site could find the best hackers and gain valuable knowledge from them?
Was the site just starting out and there was no CRT?  Eventually, the CRT was created and the leaderboard transitioned from dirty to clean?

 

I'm just curious why the board existed.

If I remember right, it was mainly so that you could just to see the difference between the two, but the dirty leaderboards eventually became such a mess that I think Sly (the site owner) decided to just take that one out completely. I don't think there was anything special about it besides that though, it was just something to view for people who were curious lol
