Sonic Boom has looked new from day one. With new a new franchise, new character designs and new mechanics all confirmed in the very first trailer, it looked as though new developer Big Red Button was looking to carve up the spiky blue world we're accustomed to. Not quite.

screenshot_63316_thumb_wide610.jpgIn an interview with Sonic Stadium, Sega producer Stephen Frost revealed that the game would be taking into account at least one element of past games - by including 2D sections:

"As with most Sonic titles, where there is generally a mix of 3-D and 2-D-based gameplay. Sonic Boom will be no different. Given the focus on exploration of this new world for Sonic, we generally wanted to focus on 3-D. However, given our desire to deliver a "familiar but new" experience, you can bet that elements like the 2-D-based gameplay will certainly show up, but maybe with a few twists."

Given that the game looks to be more adventure than platformer, we're interested to see how these sections will be implemented - we're guessing that Sonic is painfully squashed into an atom-thick pancake with an ultra-hip scarf. Wait, not guessing, hoping.

:hmm: I'm intrigued.
