Weapon Levels

For the trophy, do you need to level up a weapon on every character or can you spread the proficiencies across the party? The same question applies to magic. 
 

Edit: I misunderstood weapon levels, the trophy is tied to upgrade orbs not proficiency like the description implies. Also every character that used magic has unique spells you have to max out both.

Just to add, you need to upgrade the weapons to level 9 at the smith. So once you get all the weapons to show up with a red name on the weapons level menu, it doesn't mean you've gotten everything finished. Double check your guide for weapons, there should only be a question mark for the eleven 9 sword if you've gotten everything complete before the last fight.  This meant walking out of the mana fortress after getting all the orbs, which was a pain until I pulled up a map.
