  • WEIRD AUTUMN TRAILER

This post will go over on the things that have been added & changed in the new Weird Autumn Update, and see what's next for Night in The Woods.

WHAT IS WEIRD AUTUMN:

  • Weird Autumn Edition is something of a director's cut of Night in the Woods. It's an update to the base game that adds in a bunch of new content, from brand new ideas to cut content from the original release to the supplemental games that came out before release. It's a free update at no additional cost.

HOW AND WHEN DO YOU GET IT:

  • Weird Autumn Edition started rolling out on Dec 13th, 2017.

  • If you already owned Night in the Woods before Dec 13th, you will have gotten Weird Autumn as a free patch/update.

  • Any new purchases of the game is automatically the Weird Autumn Edition.

  • Launching at the same time as the Weird Autumn Edition is Night in the Woods on the Xbox.

  • Due to timed exclusivity deals, the supplemental games Longest Night and Lost Constellation, as well the unlockable concept art, won't become available on the PS4 until sometime in January (date TBA).

  • When Night in the Woods launches on Mobile devices later in the year, it will automatically be the Weird Autumn Edition.

  • Similarly, when the all-but-officially-announced Switch port happens, it, too, will be the Weird Autumn Edition.

WHAT ALL IS INCLUDED/DIFFERENT:

  • This section will detail a lot of what is new and different. It will try to be spoiler-free for those who want a decent idea of what is included without having it completely spoiled, while also being informative. Any more specific-spoilery information will be put into spoiler tags.

  • Changes start at the very beginning with new company logos for Finji and IF.

  • The Title Screen now has an additional option "Extras", this is where you can access the supplemental games Longest Night and Lost Constellation. It is also where you will find the concept art.

  • There are now 33 unlockable pieces of Concept Art. These unlock as you play through the game and depend on what you do.

  • The opening playground segment has been retooled with new dialogue and visuals to try and help players navigate the triple jump logs. The option to completely skip it is also now available.

  • The bass in Mae's Room is now interactable and you can use it to replay the band minigames two times a day, in a new solo mode. [THE MAESTRO/BASS ACKWARDS TROPHY CAN NOT BE UNLOCKED USING MAE'S BASS]

  • In addition to Die Anywhere Else, Weird Autumn, Pumpkin Head Guy there are now an additional three new songs to be played on Mae's Base in her room:
  • Space Dragon (Available from the start of the game)
  • Cycles (Solo Edition) [Available after completing Gregg/Bea's third hangout]
  • Tick Tock (Available in Act 3)
  • Relatedly, Die Anywhere Else and Pumpkin Head Guy now have animated lyric cards during the band practice similar to how Weird Autumn did in the original release.
  • Harfest is now a bit expanded and more fleshed out with two new carnival minigames, a marching band/parade, and an audience during the play as well as additional NPCs

  • There are nearly fifteen new townspeople (compared to the original release). Some of these characters are one scene-rs while others are more ongoing.

  • For example, there is a new townsperson in the apartments above Pastabilities that has new dialogue every day from the start of Act 2 on. There's also Rosa in the tunnels, who has dialogue every second or so day spanning until the end of Act 2.

  • One of these new townspeople is Salvi who has a full hangout/quest in the tunnels. This quest is available at the start of Act 3.

  • There is a new final hangout with Germ which takes place on Day 11.

  • The locked door in Mallard's Tomb becomes unlocked and explorable starting in Act 3

  • The church is expanded with a couple of new rooms.

    Spoiler

The Library becomes unlocked in Act 3 if you talk with Mom every day at the church

  • There are new Doodles in the Journal corresponding to some of the new additions. [NOT REQUIRED FOR PLATINUM AS OF NOW.]

  • Select Gregg and Bea Hangouts now have additional dialogue/scenes.

  • For Gregg:

    Spoiler

his investigation quest has a new location and scene at the start of it that is referenced in later game dialogue.

    For Bea:

    Spoiler

There is new dialogue in the Basement Hangout that addresses Bea smoking indoors all the time. Additionally, there is new dialogue on the way to the party in Proximity about Jackie

  • Angus will now talk to you about Demontower before the band plays Pumpkin Head. This dialogue changes based on if you played Demontower at all, if you beat it, if you get the good ending, etc.

  • NEW ADDITION TO THE EPILOGUE, MAJOR SPOILER:

    Spoiler

Molly and the Town Council have been added to the epilogue.

  • New variations to the ending scene based on the quests/hangouts you complete. MAJOR SPOILERS:

    Spoiler

For those who are curious, the ending conversation is determined based on a few things: who is your dominant friend (Gregg/Bea), if you completed the Pentagram quest, if you completed all of Lori's hangouts, and if you completed Germ's final hangout. How the conversation goes is based on what combination of these things you accomplished. i.e. Gregg's your best friend and you did the pentagram and germ's hangout but not Lori's will result in different dialogue than if Gregg's your best friend and you did Germ's hangout and Lori's but not Pentagrams. If you only do one of them (and which one). If you do two of them (and which two). If you do three of them. And so on. There's a lot more variation to the ending than people probably realize

  • Various fixes and added details and levels of polish.

And there you have it. That's more or less what all is included in Weird Autumn. Now inevitably after playing through Weird Autumn people will ask, what's next for Night in the Woods? What does the future look like? What all do we know about?

WHAT'S NEXT FOR NIGHT IN THE WOODS:

  • Well for starters, there will be an update on February 1st PS4 owners that adds Longest Night, Lost Constellation and the unlockable Concept Art to the game.

  • Night in the Woods is coming to mobile devices in 2018. More details to come.

  • Night in the Woods is coming to the Nintendo Switch on February 1st. Check the trailer for it here.

  • The Merch Store will continue to see new products added to the shop, including Mae's Shirt which have begun printing and being assembled. Unfortunately more specific dates are not available but we are to expect more products during 2018.

  • Alec Holowka has said that he is considering how to handle the new WA tracks in terms of making the OST available, but currently nothing more has been announced.

  • Relatedly, Alec has also begun finalizing the track list for the NitW Vinyl Release. He believes there will be 2 LPs. Check this tweet for more info on the tracklist.

  • Four Animated Shorts are being produced. These shorts focus on a time before the game begins that depict an important day in the spring and what each character was doing that day. These are Backer Rewards for those who backed at the sufficient level, but it is expected that they will be released publicly after a period of exclusivity. The original plan was to release the four shorts as they were made to the backers, and then cut them together for a video for the public around release of the game. Obviously that didn't happen, but I imagine the idea is still the same. Currently only one of the shorts has been released to backers ('Gregg & Angus') but the others are being worked on, with their release being delayed by development on Weird Autumn. Be sure to check for the monthly Backer Update Highlights for up to date news on these (for example we saw some in progress shots of Bea's short a few updates back)

  • A Backer "Making Of" Art Book for Night in the Woods is also in the works. Again, while specific details have not been officially announced, it is probably a safe bet to believe this will be released publicly after a period of exclusivity.

  • There is another supplemental prologue game being made as well (think 'Lost Constellation'). Similarly, this is a Backer reward that will experience a period of exclusivity before being released to the public. Details are scarce at this point, but Alec has said that it is a 'cool idea' and that it has to do with the Killer Incident. Just today, Alec and Scott both talked about how this is essentially the final piece of new content for Night in the Woods, and that in many ways it will be saying goodbye to the characters for both them and the fans. It's expected to release this year.

  • You can probably guess from the last point, but a Night in the Woods 2 is a long way off, if it happens. While Alec has expressed that Scott has an idea for what a NiTW2 would look like if they were to do it, he stressed that it is by no means in the works. All of the devs want to move onto new non-NITW projects for a while. Alec has begun work on a new game himself, while Scott and Bethany are gearing up to begin working on their next game soon. Each of these projects will likely take 3~ years of development time, and it is only after they are completed and released that they can even begin to think of starting work on Night in the Woods 2. So, sorry to say, but don't expect a NITW2 in the near future.

  • That said there are still lots to look forward to, and possibly even more things that haven't been announced yet and we'll keep you updated with all news and information.

So i'm guessing a physical release is officially off the table then eh?

Not officially, but don't expect it to happen anytime soon.

There's a problem with these physical releases, especially for indies. Making a physical version of a game takes a lot of money to create, and it becomes unknown for the devs as to whether or not they will even make that money back. The ESRB just recently made a new rule change that required any digital-only indie game seeking physical release to be re-rated at a cost of thousands of dollars. This pretty much means next to no indie game is likely to seek physical releases now because the initial cost is just too high for what are essentially -  small budget titles. (Read more about it!)

I'm still hoping that the game will go physical in the future, but for now - It's pretty much unknown.
