Making backups is always a good idea.....so yes, it should be ok.

No idea, because after what i did i had them all wiped out (plus 5th tool box). I was just saving before each convo, initiating it and then checking if it counted. I only reloaded at the last one (when Ellie gives Joel Sarah photo), but idk if the conversation should count when i press triangle or take photo, so that might not even be needed.

You can view how many you have in the statistics menu (under bonus in the main menu I believe). From there you just do the math.
