Fighting Creatures and other threats?

A question I have for this game. Do I need these guard towers set up to fight against threats? Or will my people still somewhat fight back? I have no weapons right now (haven't found any and I'm quite a ways off from developing them on my own). I only just recently unlocked the guard towers as is, and that was pretty much a small amount of time before a threat showed up.

 

I decided to save the game and deal with it next time I'm on, but they're a few bug creatures that showed up on the map, so I'm not sure on how to proceed just yet. Only thing I've killed was on the world map with a specialist.

Just use a specialist to take them out, but be prepared to move them away if they're about to die, especially with the big worm things

If someone from Australia says to move away from the big worm things, I'm gonna listen. With all the radiation, they might have become marsupial worms.
