Collectible/progression question

I was under the impression that you always started back in the 1st area if you died.  I killed the 4 boss or i'm thinking the 1st boss in act 2 I always start in act 2 now and it says follow the music.  How do I finish collecting everything in the first areas of the game?  Do you have to collect everything in the beginning Act before going to Act 2?

There are two sets of biomes.  1-3 and 4-6.  You always start in either biome 1 or biome 4.  You can switch between the starting location by entering the red door section in your ship, and looking into the 'time machine'.  This way you can collect everything in any order you want.

But you can't do that until you've beaten the boss in biome 6. I'm pretty sure, anyway. Try it and see : )
