For those who follow Formula 1 I'm sure you already know what today is. For those that don't, we lost two great drivers on the same GP weekend. Roland Ratzenberger who we lost on April 30th, and Ayrton Senna who we lost on May 1st, 1994 at Imola. Senna is regarded by many as one of, if not the greatest F1 driver of all time and he was taken from us far too soon. Many people think he could have won many more drivers championships if he had not had his fatal accident but unfortunately the world will never know.

Kazunori Yamauchi, the creator of Gran Turismo, was a massive fan of Mr. Senna and they've released a short film as a tribute.

Today, the global racing community honors three-time F1 champion Ayrton Senna on the 20th anniversary of his passing. Working closely with Senna’s family and their charitable foundation — Ayrton Senna’s Institute (IAS) — Polyphony Digital has created an official Ayrton Senna Tribute website and new Senna-inspired Gran Turismo 6 content throughout the month of May.

To commemorate the 20th anniversary, a special “Ayrton Senna Tribute” is now available within GT.com, allowing fans to follow the life of Senna through a short film and two-part slideshow developed with the assistance and full support of IAS and the Senna family.

The short film, titled “Ayrton’s Wish,” explores Senna’s dream to give the children of Brazil the opportunity to realize their own potential through education and introduces the newfound relationship between Gran Turismo and IAS. Developed in full partnership with the Senna family, Ayrton’s Wish will give you an inside look at the importance of the philosophy of IAS and explain how the non-profit organization was established in 1994 by Senna’s sister, Viviane, after his tragic passing two decades ago.

“To the Ayrton Senna Institute and to the Senna family, it´s really gratifying to have this partnership with PlayStation, through the game Gran Turismo 6, precisely in the Year 2014, when we celebrate the 20th year legacy of our beloved Ayrton.
The game, without a doubt, is a very nice way to share his values to the new generations, as well as renew and immortalize the memory of this worldwide idol in an innovative approach. Furthermore, it contributes to an initiative that annually brings a high quality public education to 2 million children and youth in all regions of Brazil.”

- Bianca Senna

At the end of this month-long journey, there will be a free update that will be released in the latter half of May with in-game racing content only available in Gran Turismo 6. Be sure to stay tuned on Gran Turismo Facebook and PS.Blog for more info.

Without Senna I don't think I'd be as big a fan of F1 as I am today. He did everything it took to win and while he may have made some questionable moves in his career there is no doubt that he was a fantastic driver.

If you have the time and you're interested I also suggest you watch the movie Senna. It is available on Netflix and it is a pretty good look into both the private and professional life of Ayrton Senna.

I remember the day he died like it was yesterday. It was a beautiful sunny Sunday afternoon. My flatmates girlfriend and I had just returned from our Sunday lunch at the local pub in time for the start of the GP on the BBC.

We settled in to watch and bam Senna goes straight on at a corner, the wheel comes up and its all over.

1994 had the makings of a cracking year as Senna in the Williams fought Schumacher in the cheating Bennetton - with its not at all removed electronic aids.

When my flatmate returned from his work at 7pm we told him what had happened. At first he didnt believe us then he just sat down and cried. I had never seen anyone cry over someone they had never met before but thats the reaction he had.
