Anyone think this game is kind of lowkey awesome?

Recommended Posts

I think I might like it even more than Helldivers 2...

It's a shame that Square Enix is fumbling the bag so hard with this. I think it needs more content and modes and less microtransactions, but this game is tons of fun.

The main PVP mode slaps and Squad mode on hard is also a fun challenge. I wish it had more trophies and a platinum.

Speaking my own opinion, I absolutely hated the pvp mode, but I really enjoyed the pve mode. I think if they added some more modes to pve, like a payload escort for example, it would be even more fun.

Once it clicks with you, it's a lot of fun. Characters have varied abilities and movesets, it's got a great sense of style and loads of charm, and the modes in the game currently are all distinct and enjoyable in their own right. I'm also glad to see another multiplayer game that isn't taking itself so seriously all the time. There's the makings of a genuinely good TPS here, but it's unfortunately dragged down by egregious monetization and a small amount of content.

I just really hope this game gets the support from it needs from Square Enix to add more content and QOL improvements, and doesn't die off before it can reach its potential. I think Season 2 just started, and it does seem to add some cool new stuff, but I haven't checked it out myself just yet. In hindsight, delaying this a few months so it could have a bit more to it at launch would have done it some good.

I really really liked this game, way more than expecting especially because it doesn't take it seriously and the characters are pretty cool. I wonder if it would have worked on a 2D environment?
The biggest puzzle for me so far is how NOBODY talks about the music, seriously every single track is fantastic.

these are just a couple of examples.
Anyways, fun game. Hope people give it a legit chance.

Just beat the new solo missions. The story continues to be very funny.😂

The new missions are more challenging than the base game ones. Each of them has the same final, final boss (that I won't spoil) and an end credits sequence.

And this is a proper final boss too with 3 phases, adds, immunity periods, and a move that will one-shot you if you don't take the health down immediately. You'll respawn though because you can only fail the mission if the core gets destroyed. No idea if it checkpoints at the boss as I never failed one, but for your sakes I hope so because the waves are way longer and last mission wave leads directly into the final boss. Very much an endurance test.

Also, at some point the other playable characters will throw perks or tools into the arena to give you the upper hand in battle.

There still isn't enough miracle dust to get all the energy core upgrades so choose wisely.

Trophy pops after the end credits.

I thought it was awesome, 100% it twice then honestly kinda missed it when I uninstalled it after wards.

let’s be honest though the trophy list sucks, a game like this should not be able to be 100% so fast.

also the whole charging $15 for a digital costume thing makes me sick to my stomach, as does locking the best character behind a pay wall. Perfect example of how greed is ruining gaming

I did not know the new update added a trophy though! Can’t believe I’m considering re downloading it for a single trophy, but I think I just might :) it is a good game

100% agreed regarding the trophy list, but the game is so content light that there probably wasn't enough they could squeeze out of it, unless they made it really challenging. Like requiring players to use certain characters in PVP, get certain chill streaks, chill in a certain way etc, no death runs etc but that would really be scraping the barrel.

And yeah the microtransactions almost feel like a parody of other heavily monetised games. Ridiculous lol.

If you're talking about Mel T (re paywall) I unlocked Mel T naturally just by playing the game but I don't remember how, sorry. I think you can get her just by levelling up.

Personally think Soa is the best character in PVP and I suspect they're gonna nerf the hell out of her. Jet and Tonix are the best in PVE.  I tried Mel T in PVP once but couldn't warm to her.

If the PS4 version ran at 60 I would probably 100% that as well but you need the frames for PVP. Really, it should just autopop since the save is all online anyway.

Oh, I just logged in and I see what happened: Mel T was a premium reward from the paid season pass, lvl 1 of the pass actually, this on season 1. We are currently on season 2, they added a new premium character, Coiff Guy, as the first reward from season 2 paid pass, and they made Mel T a free character that can be now unlocked upon completing an in-game challenge that requires achieving 37.500 total XP. I liked this approach ^^

Hey @Mr_Fluffy_Pants_ come get your Mel T, bro lol

You could already unlock Mel T for free during season 1 if you got to tier 31 on the free pass, the paid pass just allowed you to unlock her earlier.

Well if that’s true they did a poor job advertising that, the official website even says you need to buy a season pass to get her .

Mel T is an “Innocent and Cute” poster girl and CEO. Unlock via the Season Pass!”

Yes, I was actually surprised myself when I unlocked her, wasn't expecting it. I wonder if you can unlock the new season 2 character for free too, haven't checked the free pass yet.

Game's pretty mediocre to me personally as a big Splatoon fan. I'm kinda surprised Sony put money behind it... feels like the sort of game that would not ever resonate with audiences on PC or PS. Should've def been a game on Switch.

I'm also a big supporter of Square's live service stuff usually. Game looks cool and the music is great but it feels off. Also no platinum stinks. All the single-player stuff is pretty bland as well.

Agree with this comment. I feel like the updates and trophies they will continue to add will just be a way to get people to come back to it.

Imo only really good things about this game are the music and how fun the online can be. The thing that irks me the most from it tho is the voice acting/directing. is actually horrendous and makes me wanna just fully mute the game.

I can't agree. The Penny Gwyn campaign, in particular, had me rolling with laughter.

And Soa is adorable.

That's not really what i meant. I enjoy the self awareness that the game has and the humor. My reasoning is more along with Agito and Tonix. Theyre voicelines feel incredibly stiff. An easier way to explain it I feel would be like this isn't how a conversation should sound. It almost sounds like the recorded loads of the lines separately without feeding off of eachother. It just makes the flow of voicelines hard to listen to. Most of this comes from the story missions early on, especially Agito's.

My point was that 50% of why the humour works is because of the voice acting.  If the voice acting wasn't good the humour would fall flat.

But fair enough, as you're referring to Agito and Tonix. I guess I wasn't really listening out for it as their voice lines sounded fine to me.

I was legit curious about the voice acting. As someone who just started voice acting I really liked what they were going for. After reading your initial comment I tried to imagine different tones for the characters but still couldn't picture them.
To be fair I noticed it with Agito but maybe wasn't paying enough attention with Tonix. interesting!

I think it's lowkey one of the worst games we've ever gotten on PS Plus in its 14 year history. When will they stop bringing out these online only games with problematic matchmaking and no personality whatsoever? This becomes Free 2 Play before 2024 is through guaren-damn-teed.
