What is this game about?

I have just started playing this game and I have absolutely no idea what is going on. 

 

Could someone please explain the plot to me.

The plot unfolds as you go along. But for a brief intro,

you are a woman called Red who has lost her voice. Your lovers consciousness is now contained in your sword thing, the Transistor. He knows more about what's going on than you and he'll tell you about it when relevant.

So you just started and you don't know the whole story...usually stories unfold as things go on and isn't dumped as one massive exposition dump in the first 5 minutes of the game

Make sure you read all the character bios and particularly that you switch you abilities around to fully unlock their backgrounds and fates.  Things will start to come together for you around the first boss fight, but you'll probably want to play through the New Game+ anyway to really understand everything.  It's definitely confusing at first.

Ugh, it kills me that the first comment gave such a huge spoiler about the Transistor's personality. Why would you ruin that for someone?? Learning that in-game was heartbreaking.
