At this point, who isn't working on a home video game console?

The latest tech company tied to development of a video game console is online retailing giant Amazon.According to Game Informer, the company is working on an Android-based console launching by the end of the year. The report cites sources with "knowledge of the in-development hardware."

An Amazon spokesman told Game Informer the company would not comment on rumors or speculation.

In June, The Wall Street Journal reported tech titan Google would join the video game console parade, developing their own Android-based console. Let's not forget the endless speculation that Apple might introduce its own video game hardware.

If the rumors pan out, the latest devices enter a crowded field. Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo have been the dominant performers for years with its Xbox, PlayStation and Wii brands respectively. All three either have launched (Nintendo Wii U) or will launch (Microsoft's Xbox One, Sony's PlayStation 4) new hardware for this holiday. Then there's the Android-based Ouya, which launched in June for $99.

Wasn't it flooding the market with crap the cause of the 1983 crash? At least the PS4 is in a relatively solid position.

I don't see the point in them making a console when they have the wonderful Kindle Fire that is more than capable to play the type of games an Andriod based console will put out. Create a controller and a way for the Fire to output via HDMI to a television and there you have it, you're welcome Amazon.

Seriously this why bother making a console for Android games when you already have a device perfect for it, the only reason I see for skipping this option is if the console is also targeting 'serious' gamers but that and Android games simply don't go together.
