Catz's Series Dump

So I made a checklist way back in the day, and it was pretty shit (not to say this one wont be either).  This is just me trying to structure the main thing I've grown to care about in terms of games, the seriesI don't know how I'm going to structure or update this when the time comes, since obviously not everything counts towards these, but it'll be a thing, for as long as i care about it.
Also nothing VR is counted cause fuck wasting money on a VR.

You made the thread back in 2016, I don't really consider that way back when. I do see you got a thing going here.

I might suggest going back to some old PS3 games like Just Cause 2, before you jump into Just Cause 4. I'm also stuck at 96 percent on Uncharted 4, probably too late for me to bother with those two trophies at this point, too many other games to play.

that was still like 5 years ago, enough to almost completely forget about it, and alot has happened since then
and yeah, i dont really have much of an order of what im going to do, but obviously anything ive already got on my list takes priority, though i have heard alot about how shit just cause 4 is, so that'll be fun

I recall your old thread and I thought it was fairly good. I started my own thread at the same time you did and it still kind of sucks, it's more of a gathering of thoughts of games I've done more than anything else. Not trying to be patronizing, just offering my quick thoughts.

Just Cause 4 was honestly boring. Even with a PS4 Pro and PS4 the game just doesn't look that great. Just Cause 3 would of been a whole lot better were it not for the performance issues, that really soured my enjoyment of the game. The gear challenges were a good challenge.

Just Cause 2 I enjoyed more. The collectibles are going to be annoying, also it's literally impossible to 100% the entire map.

I've been working more on getting my old PS3/Vita games done, because we know how hard it can be to go back to older games sometimes.

Everyone talks about the jc3 performance but i can never remember any issues, though that might be down to me not giving a shit unless its like, single digit frames or 60p textures or some other extremely bad shit, and its been a hot minute. otherwise i actually really liked it with all the traversal tech making the standard overly large map not a complete pain in the ass like most games

2 just has the dumb fucking difficulty selection for no reason basically making you rush the story and do everything else in two separate runs, which is ech, but it'll come, eventually.

I've never had much of an issue going adjusting to old games (aside from sometimes bizarre control schemes), but then again i rarely actually play "new" ones, so maybe thats why, or i just adjust quickly

nah its fine, its just the uh, dissonance, between me then and me now, where like i dont know what the hell to do with that anymore, so i'll just clean slate it and try again

Oooohhhh - you got some real treats lined up there!

Metro Exodus, Sekiro, the 2 remaining Bioshock game - all great!

Also, most of your outstanding Assassins Creed games are good ones (ACIII notwithstanding ??), and the Far Cry “interstitial” games (Primal / New Dawn) are good wee games that don’t take a whole lot of time, but have a whole lot of fun!

Good luck and have fun ?

yeah, there's alot of things I'm looking forward to, but obviously everything's gotta wait their turn for reasons (like not even owning the first two cause i rarely buy "big new" games, and waiting literal years to do bioshock 2's mp with my friends), but most of the series i actually bothered to put on there i like, which is the whole reason i want to do them all, so they better be good

assassin's creed i did actually have a bit of a push for at the end of last year, but that kinda ran out since i just hate solo grinding so much, which makes ac4 just so much fun, which I still need to actually finish.  and I'm surprised you didn't exclude odyssey along with 3 based on some things I've heard about it from the big ac guys i talk to.  and hopefully the "side" games will be better then the mainline for fc, since I didn't care much for 4 & 5 honestly, plus whatever the hell classic's on about.

I’d certainly never put Odyssey in with ACIII - I’ve played almost every AC game (just missing Valhalla and a couple of the really obscure phone ones, so not sure if that makes me one of the Big AC guys - but I feel like one ?) and I’d put Odyssey in my top 5 for sure - visually amazing, excellent protagonist in Kassandra, good story, great dlc, massive interesting world - it has the whole package as far as I’m concerned.

I liked 4 quite a bit - 5 was weaker - in story for sure - though the actual shooting was still a lot of fun to me, but I much preferred New Dawn to it. It’s goofier and sillier, but much better paced and the fact that it’s shorter made it feel like a much tighter narrative

Rank: EV = PBS > BR:N > BA

Part of me wonders how this & PBS are part of the same series, not that that's a bad thing, but the difference between that game and the endings of this game's two arc are so far apart from each other.  Either way it's definitely more of the Versus gameplay, but at the same time feels kind of worse then Estival's? I feel like the camera was so much more of a pain in the ass here, aswell as some smaller things, like not having as much variety since obviously half the cast is deleted, or making me play as the two characters I like playing as the least in that game the second most in their respective arcs.  Besides that, the story is fine enough, even if it has a weird RE2 scenario thing where both arcs follow the same basic beats and try to be two halves of a story, but theres enough small differences by the end that makes it kind of weird and not clear which is "more canon" then the other.  Kinda disappointed that all the free missions are just filler, instead of being mini-character stories like Estival, but oh well. It's fun enough for what it is as a remake of a ten year old game, but I don't think it's better the Estival or PBS; definitely better the BA though, even if thats not a high bar.

Sometimes what I do is I'll go out and just buy games mostly off the back of an opinion I've heard of them being really "hard".  Now "hard" obviously is debatable, and I didn't think this was that hard to be honest, but seven years ago, when I bought this, there wasn't as much competition on that list, so this was alot more notorious, plus it being developed by Rockstar, who was still actually making games at the time which I actually enjoyed, and I was super onboard.  And well, yeah, it's great, one of if not my favorite TPS even.  The gameplay is so clean and feels so good to play, the bullettime is fantastic, the weapons (outside of a few outliers) feel and work great, and the "pseudo-qte" sequences throughout are cool.  Only real problems with it is that the shootdodge, while definitely cool, leaves Max in the open for a century when he gets up after, so it's practically useless; the NPCs throughout the game (especially Passos) add nothing and are a hinderance more for just existing; and the enemies sometimes are a bit too durable compared to the ammo you're given at the time.  Also the story is like, kinda whatever, I've never really cared about it but it kinda meanders from "protect this family" to "stop this conspiracy in the Brazilian police force" but it's just there to bring you from one level to the next.  I know people don't like this game because of how different it feels to the original two, and that's fair, I played MP1 a few years ago and I get it, but I played 3 first so I already enjoyed it beforehand.  All I need now is somebody to sit down & realize throwing MP2 with trophies out is easy money, like for fucks sake rockstar, come on now.  Oh yeah and fuck the multiplayer, as much as I like their games, I've never liked any of their multiplayers, and this is no different, especially the complete waste of time that rank 50 was.

Additional Progress
Trials Fusion - 98% ~ Actually managed to finish the last dlc, meaning all thats left are those last eight challenges, oh boy

oh hey finally an update because I actually finished a fucking game again.  I'm not set on doing them like this fully, but i think this is fine, for now at least, but I still don't know if I should do anything for shit not in a series, or do updates before I actually finish a game.  Maybe I can mop something together on series that I've already finished? Maybe I put devs/publishers in the list too as i been thinking about some of them, idk

A very interesting take on a purely pvp game, where the primary weapons are the walls you spawn into the environment to try and box in the enemies.  It was actually pretty fun when it was on plus like three years ago, but all that's been left since then is bots (for now).  Music is actually alright, and I do like the super high contrast style they chose, like a discount Tron. Didn't take as long as I thought it would when grinding, and I only crashed out like three times, which I would call pretty good.   That's also all the Roll7 games done which I did want at some point so at least there's that.

Additional Progress

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 - 87% - Sat down & just barrelled through all of the zombies shit besides gun grinding, plus some of the real MP.

Resident Evil 5 - 69% - Just finished up Desperate Escape.

Far Cry 2
Enjoyment: 7/10

Rank: 3 > 2 > 5 > 4

One of the most infamous "hard" games, though honestly, it wasn't actually that bad over the 6+whatever years it took of on & off playing.

I will say that its age definitely shows, with things like a save/don't save & continue prompt showing up every time you do anything in missions instead of say, an autosave, and saving takes like 10-15 seconds on a new slot which really just breaks the flow pretty hard (though part of that is me always making new saves to avoid things glitching out, but still); or the framerate tanking real hard driving in some bits, including actual slideshow tier at the end of a session which I'm not sure was like a memory leak or what.
The game looks...okay, just incredibly washed out, which I'll just chalk to the age & "realism" so its whatever, not terrible.

The gun durability is neat on paper, but in reality in the singleplayer it's forgettable at best and tedious at worst, which could also describe the outposts too I suppose, with how they only give you random resources and respawn all the enemies as soon as you turn around making actually trying to clear them pretty pointless.
I also hate how frail vehicles are that like 5 bullets will put you to grey smoke from the engine instantly (which does actually lower your top speed & acceleration the more fucked the engine is by the way), and how every single corner has a mounted gun truck around it ready to U-turn on a dime and break your car with nothing you can do unless you stop & get out, getting shot in the process.

And of course, gotta mention the multiplayer, and I gotta say it, it wasn't that bad to do.  Sure the however many kills does take forever, even with two people to kill, and all the dumb glitches like resetting every 3, then 2 matches or the multikills not working properly with that piece of shit rotary grenade launcher; but even still it only took like, 3 days of hard grinding? which wasn't that bad since you're always actually making progress and unlocking the upgrades bit by bit so you can see it happening.

Despite its problems, I still think I enjoyed it more then 4's blandness, or 5's weirdness and not so good dlc, but 3? I'm not sure that I could tell with how long ago I actually played 3, but I think 3's more gamey-ness, and just more things to do in general like hunting (with actual hostile animals unlike 2's weak ass zebras), outposts that actually don't respawn by walking three feet away, and more mobility other then paper cars, slow boats, and like four hang gliders on the map, I guess appropriately second will do.

Just Cause 2 on paper feels like just a less polished Just Cause 3 with a few exceptions, for better and worse.  Take for example the maps: In 3, you have Medici and it's really big island with two smaller seperated areas, 2's Panau is alot more interconnected with more even distribution of settlements and less is wasted on water, which I do appreciate to an extent, but at the same time it feel like there's overwhelmingly more things to do just off sheer map icons alone.  Clearing those towns & bases & whatever also is a downgrade from 3, since in 3 it was super nice and clear, giving you a good checklist of all the shit you need to destroy to liberate it, but in 2 the only form of a "checklist" is a percentage, making those quite hidden fuel tanks or transformers a real pain in the ass, however it's even worse, as you also need to grab all the "resource parts" in the area too for whatever fucking reason, and those you can only find with a little flashing icon in the top left which just basically amounts to running around getting shot in a military base looking for these randomly placed crates killing all flow the game might have on clearing areas.

On the note of the resources, they're okay I suppose.  You have four main resources: weapon parts (to upgrade your guns), vehicle parts (to upgrade your buyable vehicles), cash stashes (to buy things from the black market), and armor pieces (every five gives you a health boost).  Despite they fact there's like 2700 of them total which is way too fucking many, it is nice they actually do tangible things.  As for the black market, it's nice you can call a weapon drop or vehicle basically anywhere, but it is weird how limited the vehicle selection is (there's only like 12 of them including one boat, one plane, and two helicopters), they are admitted some of the better ones especially fully upgraded; same for the guns except you can actually buy all of them (but only carry one big gun, two sidearms, and grenades/triggered bombs) and they upgrade the weapons enemies drop too which I think is incredibly weird design but it saves money (that you'll have way too much of as is) so whatever.

One thing that did surprise me is how awful vehicles control in 2, after years of hearing that "the cars are bad in 3 cause the guys who actually know how to do them were busy on Mad Max" even though 2 & 3's cars are pretty close.  Boats probably handle the best, but I'm not sure how easy it would be to fuck up boat controls so that makes sense.  Helicopters are fine, though they are really stiff and aiming their guns/rockets, especially at other helicopters, is kind of a pain, but not unbearable.  Planes are almost unusable, they are so twitchy on rolling that it's very, very easy to lose control and bin it, plus no actual "flat" turning exists (or the ability to reverse on ground) so you have to roll into the turns and just hope you've lined up properly.  Thankfully they don't make you use them very often.  Cars are incredibly unwieldy at any form of real speed, and the roads are not wide enough for how much ai traffic is in the way meaning hitting things is kind of unavoidable; the Trackmania Turbo-esque physics on which though is hilarious and is trying to lean in on the action movie style I guess? Still just ended up paragliding everywhere which is still fun at least.

My least favorite part though is probably the absurd spawn rate of enemies and more specifically, their never ending stream of attack helicopters on heat (wanted level from GTA) as low as 2 making doing any form of destruction (which always gives some heat no matter what or where) just tedious as all hell; I can't even count the sheer amount of times I've had to do that hijack QTE sequence, since it's far & away the fastest way to deal with them.  Enemies are also weirdly tanky, even on normal, and bullet accuracy is all over the place so you need quite a few shots even with the highest upgraded guns on pretty much everyone.

The story is whatever but it's quite short (only 7 main missions about 20-30 minutes a piece) and knows that it doesn't really matter and just has fun with it.  Most faction missions are super short, singular objectives (the intro cutscenes might be longer then some of them), but a few have marginally more meat to them, but not by much outside of shooting the Imperial Japanese Army on a cursed island to save some drugs deliveries which is the best one.

Basically I would say if you enjoyed 3, you would probably enjoy 2 to an extent (or vice versa), but personally I liked 3's polish more overall.

Wolfenstein 3D
Difficulty: 4/10
Enjoyment: 6/10
Rank: TNO > TOB > 3D > 2009

One of the proper boomer shooters, Wolf 3D definitely shows it's age in some areas which I can't totally hold against it, but I can still complain about.

Firstly, the main gunplay is decent, if a little slow with kind of sluggish turning, okay walk speed, and a somewhat tactical approach required for gunfights with how fast you can die (and yes I am aware you can sprint but that has the inverse problem of being so fast it's unwieldy so I didn't use it much).  There's only 5 main enemies in the game, only 2 of which are tanky enough to be somewhat of an issue without the Nazi's sheer numbers advantage, but the worse of the two only shows up in the second episode and never again so overall it's not too bad.  Basically the main approach to areas is try to bait guards into chokepoints, like doorways or corners, and lay em down one at a time (because they can shoot through each other without consequence but you can't), and the bullet drop off is so strong you can die in like, 2-3 shots up close, but take almost nothing from a good distance.

The level design is incredibly basic, every map's built on a grid with few tilesets and decorations around, so getting lost is very easy and honestly a bigger concern then the enemies, at least early on.  Also secrets exist, but without a map or wall humping you're not finding most of them which isn't great, and neither is the fact some later on are required to progress which is asinine.  Alot of the levels are quite big too, which I didn't really end up liking, so the overall smaller episodes (3 & 5), I probably enjoyed the most.

You only have 4 weapons in the game, and the knife is so bad you may aswell have 3: The pistol, which is really just used until you get the Machine Gun, the primary weapon of the game (for me at least), and the Chaingun mostly for big horde clearing & boss fights.  The Chaingun eats two bullets minimum per shot and with how easy it is to kill the basic guards in one hit the Machinegun is way better at conserving ammo, since I ran out a couple times in the last few level even trying my best to conserve.

The boss fights are incredibly simple, and that's fine, though 4/6 you're supposed to hear when they're done shooting to pop out and get some hits, but I honestly could not hear them very well, and I don't know if that's just a me thing or a ps3 port thing or what.

I don't think I liked it more then TNO or TOB, just due to it's basicness, but I believe 3D's more fun then the 09 game, not to say I didn't enjoy that, it was just kinda bland in comparison.

Mirror's Edge
Difficulty: 6/10
Enjoyment: 8/10
Rank: 1 = Catalyst

I actually quite liked Catalyst when I played it years ago, and was always interested in playing the original, but just never got around to until now; do I think it's better then the sequel though? I'm not sure.  I think the linear design of 1 is alot tighter then Catalyst's, until the back half where there's far less room to actually full speed your way through the map instead being far more platformer-y which I don't really like.  So basically I like half of 1 more then Catalyst, and half less, which I guess makes them even?

The biggest issue I have with the game is how "overprecise" everything is, so if you're even a few degrees off of a pipe you won't grab it, or if you try to climb a ledge a smidge too close to the corner she'll never grab it, or attempting to do a springboard a few millimeters too far away might make her jump at nothing or mantle the shit behind it (possibly to your death).  It's all just too infuriating when you know what to do, and how to do it, but the game just decides "No".

Combat is quite bad, and without that triggerable slow-mo I don't think I ever would've taken down any of the assault rifle guys in the later levels, with how tiny the window for the disarm is. The rest of the enemies at least are far more fair in that sense and even then you can avoid it 90% of the time, but that other 10% sure isn't fun.

The speedruns weren't as bad as I thought they'd be, with one sharp exception in the form of chapter 9, where I spent two and a half hours on that garbage because of the smallest error (usually just not grabbing a ledge or pipe properly) completely ending it. None of the others were anywhere near as bad, not even chapter 2, the other notorious one, which is far less punishing despite being almost twice the length.

Time Trials were where most of the issues with this game arise, since you only have a leniency of 9/99 stars to not get, so you need to get 3* on almost everything but thankfully most aren't that bad, but the few that are are very bad.  You at least get almost instant retries, which without probably would've driven me insane. The ones I skipped for those curious ended up being Playground 3, New Eden, Atrium 1, Shard 1, Chroma, Razzmatazz, Actino, Actino Rise, & Reflex.

OlliOlli is no longer done, now that World's out, so that'll be happening at some point, I guess
And Obviously both Mirror's Edges are done so it's just give and take with these things

Assassin's Creed III
Difficulty: 4.5/10
Enjoyment: 6/10
Rank: Brotherhood > II > Unity > Syndicate > China > III > Revelations > India > Freedom Cry > Russia

Spoiler

Only decided to go back to this after the big shutdown warning cause I remembered I never did the pivots, and admittedly those weren't too bad but they did cost me 150 friends off my list.  The game itself admittedly wasn't as bad as I was expecting after hearing all the negative opinions over the years, or maybe my standards are just that low.

Connor though, when people joke that he's flat, they weren't kidding; actually has one tone of voice for 95% of the game which was amusing after a while.  One thing I do wish was more flat was the frontier though, which may seem weird but I didn't really like all the tree climbing and how like, pretty linear path they all are.  The cities were not much better either though since the buildings are fairly spread out and not that high so as a whole the parkour of this game was kind of wasted in my opinion, the Desmond sections did it better honestly.

I was scared going in and seeing hunting since I never end up liking hunting in games, but it's so limited and the spawns are fairly consistent that it wasn't actually that bad; unlike the convoy/crafting systems which I never ever ended up using until I was forced to and was still short waiting on money to buy the last few weapons, sadly.

The mission constraints felt really easy to be honest, and the side missions went pretty fast too, which kinda made it feel shorter then some games that don't even make you 100% the game funnily enough.  Fuck the boat though, it was kinda charming to see the prototype of 4's ship combat but god did it need the upgrades it got there cause this is just clunky and unfun, especially when they throw the super choppy water at you.

The dlc was uh, interesting? The animal spirit powers were fun, and the story was ridiculous which was fine, but every one of the three requiring you to just sit there and slowly grind random events after was just a drag.  Also maybe this was just me but fuck the guard dogs all over the dlc, they're so overpowered and see you from 10 years away that they just drag sections with them down hard.

So yeah, decently good, but still probably in the lower half of the ACs.

Mafia: Definitive Edition
Difficulty: 3/10
Enjoyment: 8/10
Rank: 2 > 1 > 3

Spoiler

A very nice looking remake of a game I was interested in but the age always put me off of playing.

I enjoyed the story, and the characters were charming but there is some weird things I agree with, like how fast Tommy gets into the family vs say Vito in 2 which took what, 7? 8? missions opposed to just breaking a few cars before Tommy gets let in lol.  Also I was surprised to learn they like, doubled the ending cutscene's length in the definitive version, and I'm not sure if I like the old one better or not, but there was one change that was a nice touch.

Mafia 1 has the same problem of 2 where it's a linear open world game which is unfortunate expected, but also worse then 2's cause there's even less to interact with like no stores, only a single garage, etc. which really makes the world feel like a waste of time sadly.

The gunplay was fine enough, and the stealth the few times they make you do it wasn't awful surprisingly, but I didn't really like the driving especially the infamous race and that one bike sequence in mission 15 were just awful.  Classic was interesting with the "realistic" losing clips when you reload even though that doesn't make any sense on a revolver but alas.

Trophies are fairly basic, just beat the game + collectibles + a few misc. easy things.  I did like the little comics you got, especially the ones referencing the Mafia games directly, always a nice touch even if they sadly did have to reference Jimmy's Vendetta.

So yeah, probably better then 3, but a less expansive 2, so that edges it out.

The Bit.Trip

Spoiler

Six classic WiiWare games in one bundle, and boy are they all over the place.  I bought this on a whim really cause it was cheap and I think I remembered seeing it on the DS years ago.

Beat is the first of the series, and is a Pong-esque game of hitting blocks back across the screen which unfortunately made the cardinal sin of being entirely motion controls; I can only hope they were better on the Wii then here, cause they are not good.  Beat's also in my opinion the hardest of the six, almost entirely cause of the final boss of Growth (Stage 3), which is literally just Pong, and it is a brutal first to 15 match where the enemy paddle cheats and divides itself every few points you get.  So yeah, I'm not very fond of this one. (it's what made the game take 4 years for me to finish)

Core is second, and the most proper rhythm game of them all, where you hit a direction & a button to shoot a laser to destroy blocks in four directions.  This is the rarest one and I could see why, but you can also cheat it out a bit with a turbo controller so you only have to hold a direction instead of pressing both at once, which makes it far easier.

Void comes third and honestly is the one I remember the least; you freeformly control a blob that eats black blocks and avoids white ones, and you can "pop" yourself to cash in points and shrink yourself to make dodging around things easier.  Definitely one of the easier ones, since I don't remember any particular problems, but also time may be contributing to that.

Runner is the most famous one, and is appropriately, an autorunner where you just avoid obstacles through stages.  This is the point the visuals take a large step up and it shows, since it is quite pretty.  Also the most unique level structure of them all, with about 12 mini stages across 3 worlds, as opposed to 3 big stages in the other ones.

Fate is the least rhythm of them all, being an on-rails twin stick shooter (yes that's the joke).  The super dreary atmosphere helps keep it unique, to the abstract vibrancy of all the others, but I think that also lends itself to having the least memorable music sadly.  Still probably the most "fun" of them all in my opinion.

Flux comes last and it goes full circle by having the same motion controlled Pong as Beat, just in the opposite direction, but they do give you checkpoints this time, making it far less of a pain then Beat.  I think flux might have my favorite music of them all, specifically Catharsis, which is super good and almost makes up for the pain of getting meta on it.  Also has a really nice ending to both the game and the series as a whole.

So yeah, I liked it overall, and as long as I never have to deal with Beat/Flux's motion controls I'll do more of them, so that's adding another series to the board I suppose.

Yes, call the presses, I'm not dead surprisingly, so I just threw this together as a bit of catchup, also I did plat OlliOlli world but I'll save that for when i bother 100% it I suppose.  Try and keep this from staying dead even if my rambling is all over the place, oh well.
