Popular Post hugesawfan
The Japanese version of the game is now available to download and there are no difficulty options, the game defaults to easy. So you can easily get the Fox rank playing on that version instead of bothering with hard mode in the Western versions. Note this is the Japanese version of the original game, not Integral. I cant imagine the three hour limit for the Fox rank giving you much trouble if you're playing the Japanese version, but if you really, really want to play it safe, you can use this post to guide you through two helpful glitches. Actually, I'm ASSUMING the Fox rank trophy will unlock fine in the Japanese version. You might want to wait for confirmation from someone else if the trophy pops or you can try it yourself. It's been confirmed the fox rank trophy pops fine if you play the Japanese version of the original game, hard mode is not required. The following glitches work on both the Western and Japanese version. The torture room skip is a well known glitch that allows you to reach the torture sequence within about five minutes of starting the game, completely skipping the Ocelot, Tank, Gray Fox, Psycho Mantis and Sniper Wolf I fights, making it pretty handy for cheesing a Fox run in which you have to complete the game in under three hours. While many non-speedrunners have heard of this glitch, what most non-speedrunners don't know is that it softlocks the game. Why? I don't know the specifics, but it seems the game is thrown out of sync, certain weapons aren't supposed to be available to the player until certain story events have been passed, so if you pick up a weapon earlier than the game thinks you should the weapon will be added to your inventory but the game will not let you use it. For example, as soon as you leave the torture room you can head into B2 using your level 6 keycard given to you by Otacon during the torture sequence to grab the PSG-1 and FAMAS, but you wont be able to use said weapons until you progress further into the game. This isn't an immediate problem, as you make your way to Communication Tower A with no boss fights to worry about, the game will unlock the weapons for you. It becomes a problem when you grab the Stinger Missile and cant use it to fight the Hind. Fortunately there is a glitch that allows you to skip the Hind (and elevator fight with the camo guards). Once you've defeated Sniper Wolf II, the game unlocks the Stinger Missile and you can play through the rest of the game as normal. So if you want to use the glitches to give yourself an easier time with the Fox rank: Play the game as normal until you reach B1 of the first building. Perform the glitch to get into torture room. Johnny will immediately leave, giving you a chance to hide under the bed and escape. Do not take this opportunity. You first need Otacon to arrive and give you the level six card. So just stand around until the torture sequence begins. You can combine this playthrough with your bandana playthrough although you will have to beat the torture sequence with the starting health bar. It's not as difficult as you might think, you can pause the game (pressing L1 and R1 at the same time) if you need to rest. Not to mention MGS2's extreme torture sequence will be ten times worse so the practice wouldn't hurt. If you cant beat this torture sequence with this health bar you don't stand a chance at MGS2's Big Boss rank. If you already have the bandana you can just submit. If going for the bandana you will have to through two torture minigames before Otacon arrives. Once Otacon gives you the level 6 keycard, hide under the bed or use the ketchup, escape as usual, grab your stuff. You can immediately head to the communication towers with no boss fights to trouble you, but you'll want to grab weapons on your way. As you play through the game make sure your stun grenades are maxed out for the communication tower climb, although if you already have the bandana this wont be a problem. Keeping your chaff grenades stocked up is a good idea too to make the Rex fight a joke. The second communication tower requires passing four turrets twice. If you have stealth camo this wont be an issue, if you don't have stealth camo you will need at least 9 chaff grenades for the second tower. Grab the FAMAS, C4 and PGS-1 in B2 of the first building. Grab the Nikita launcher in B1 of the second building (would recommend grabbing enough ammo if you want to cheese the Wolf II fight as well). (optional) Grab the body armour from B2 of the second building. To pass through the commander's office (Mantis boss room) you can clip through the bookcase by just walking into it, as you pass this room and the wolf cave the game will think you just defeated Mantis and Wolf, it will correct the length of your health as you pass through these rooms (as well as increase your ammo capacity and unlocking access to various weapons). Make your way to top of the first communication tower by spamming stun grenades before you rappel down the building. Before you rappel down the building you'll want to make a save. For the upcoming glitch you'll need to take damage from a big explosion (C4 / grenade) and a small explosion (overcooking a chaff grenade). You can use one ration for your Fox / Big Boss rank, so it's up to you if you want to save that ration to give yourself more freedom for later parts like the final jeep sequence, or if you want to use it during the upcoming glitch. Your health is replenished at the start of the rappel sequence and you'll need to pass this sequence with enough health leftover to survive a big explosion (C4 / grenade) and a small explosion (chaff grenade). Pass rappel sequence (reload save if you don't have enough health to survive the upcoming explosions). Snipe / nikita launch the three guards on the walkway (don't take damage, also would recommend saving enough nikita shots so you can cheese the second Sniper Wolf fight). Avoid damage from the hind as you enter the second tower. Grab the stinger launcher (which you cannot use yet). Go to the bottom of the tower to trigger the two second cutscene showing you the destroyed stairs (this will spawn the trigger for the Otacon cutscene by the elevator). Head back upstairs, do not trigger the Otacon cutscene (done so by heading south of the door), head back through the door you came. Re-enter the stairwell and save, this is to create a checkpoint so if you mess up the glitch you can reload here instead of having to travel down the tower and back up every time you fail. This is where you'll perform the Hind D skip. This involves performing the weapon glitch to delete the stinger from your inventory. If the stinger is no longer in your inventory, the Otacon cutscene will not trigger, but the boxes that would normally be blocking your ascent will be gone, as you follow the steps this will lead to you skipping the Hind D fight AND the elevator fight. If you would like a video demonstration check out this video (go to 9:28). Plant a C4 (can throw a grenade instead if you want). Equip keycard and chaff grenade (or ration if you want to use the one ration of your Fox run here instead of saving it for later). Go prone within the explosion's reach of the C4 / grenade. If using C4 press circle to detonate it. When you hear Snake grunt in pain, tap L1 to unequip the item and then immediately hold down triangle and then spam random inputs on the D-PAD as fast as you can. You'll be in first person view as Snake climbs to his feet, once he stands up stop with the D-PAD inputs. Let go of triangle and immediately hold down R2 and select the stinger. If Snake is visibly holding the chaff grenade despite you having the stinger missile selected in your inventory than congratulations, you performed it correctly. If not, reload your save to try again. Although the stinger is shown as selected, you're actually holding the chaff. Overcook the chaff grenade so it blows up in your hand (hold square). Once it blows up, tap R1 to unequip the stinger. The stinger should now be gone (scroll through your inventory to confirm). Now you can head to the top of the tower, bypassing the Otacon cutscene. During the ascent and descent equip the stealth camo to avoid damage from the turrets. If you don't have stealth camo you will need to use eight chaff grenades to avoid damage from the turrets. Once you reach the top, climb up the ladder and then climb straight back down. Head back down and you'll find the boxes blocking you. It's finicky and takes a few attempts but just run back and forth until Snake is standing on top of the boxes as shown in this video (go to 4:45) and this one. When you're on top of the boxes walk left and you'll fall to the bottom of the tower. Leave the tower and fight Wolf II. Obvious well known way to beat her with no damage taken is to immediately run to the south east corner and stand behind the hill while using Nikita missiles to destroy her. Once Wolf is dead you'll want to go back into the tower, up the elevator and grab the stinger missile since you still need it to fight Rex. And now, with Wolf dead, the game will allow you to use the stinger missile. You can now progress through the game as normal with no further concerns. There are other minor skips but I don't think they save enough time for them to be worth learning (for trophy hunters at least). The torture room and Hind skips put you at such a great time advantage you have to go out of your way to exceed the three hour limit. GastNDorf
Wasn't there also a glitch to skip most of the comm tower, the rappel and the 3 guys ambush (Boba skip)? Unless that part is necessary to skip the Hind...

Unless that part is necessary to skip the Hind... Yes, the Boba skip will allow you skip half of Tower A, the rappel sequence and the guard ambush on the outside walkway. Although it only saves you less than five minutes, for trophy hunters I think trying to replicate it would waste more time than if they just played through the tower normally. zeero7uk
I've tried to get to the top of the com tower after using the weapon glitch, but the boxes haven't moved to let me progress to the top?

You went to the bottom of the tower to trigger the two second cutscene showing you the destroyed staircase too? You haven't triggered the Otacon cutscene at all? You have to do the glitch in the same room as the cutscene. If you do it in the room next door when you enter the boxes will move back. I made the same mistake today. edit: Can confirm. JP Version WORKS for Fox ranking. Edited October 26, 2023 by Evil-Fefe

I did it in the same room right before where the cutscene triggers, I'm just practice running at the min though. I'll start a new save and try again later. Mc-Bman89
Probably a dumb question so my apologies... When you folks are saying to play the JP version, does that just mean playing Integral? Or would I actually need a Japanese psn account to own that version of the game?

danh90
Struggling a bit with pulling off the Hind skip glitch. Whenever I successfully pull it off the gun cameras end up shooting the crap out of me. Is the whole idea to spam chaffs in this area (bearing in mind I will need some for REX later) and use up my 1 ration limit here too?

If you have stealth camo you can just run past the cameras, if not chaff grenades are the only way to get past them.
danh90
Would I be ok using one ration as well? Low on health from rapel segment. No stealth camo as switched from English to Japanese version for 2nd playthrough.

If you're gonna save a ration for anything I would recommend saving it or the final jeep sequence. Although it's far from impossible to do the jeep without a ration, it'll probably take you a few attempts.
