Rumor: Has Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem Been Cancelled?

Online rumblings seem to suggest so, but have your pinch of salt ready

Remember Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem? The Wii U crossover was announced back in January 2013 to great fanfare from followers of both franchises, but since then information on the title has been scarce.

At E3 this year Nintendo producer Hitoshi Yamagami confirmed that the game was still on schedule, but no new footage or screenshots were shown — quite a strange turn of events when you consider how long it has been in development.

Rumours are now circulating online that the game has been completely abandoned, and although the source — 4chan — is somewhat questionable, its posters have been right on other (admittedly rare) occasions.

Here's the general gist from the original post, which we've tweaked to incorporate better language:

  • Development was difficult because of differing viewpoints on how the project should be handled story-wise. Apparently the SMT team was possessive and difficult around the story, and the FE team was frustrated because it was being bossed around, which created tension and overall awkwardness.
  • The project was restarted 5 times, which lowered the team's morale.
  • TBA at last E3 was only because Nintendo still had faith in the project.
  • Atlus was more optimistic, but the first point worried them.
  • The only version the developers put out wasn't approved by Nintendo/Atlus due to lack of quality, which further decreased morale.
  • Both Atlus and Nintendo were frustrated with their respective teams upon cancellation. Expect some shuffling of employees due to "conflictive" behaviour.

The author also said that IGN will be posting the official news on the cancellation tomorrow (5th December).

Well, it certainly is concerning that we haven't really heard much of anything since it was announced, and doesn't look too good with the lack of update screens, but strangers things have happened to games we thought would never come out.  Mirror's Edge 2 was up in the air for a long time, but finally got officially announced this past E3.  Duke Nukem Forever is probably the most famous...it was in limbo for like 10 years, but got released.  Whether FE x SF will be any good if this is the case, I'm unsure, since Duke was apparently very bad.  It's hard to imagine that happening to a Nintendo game, though.

It has been nearly two years and aside from the announcement not much has been shown. If those rumors are true the SMT team showed a negative side of themselves and now both developers are going to suffer from this. I'd rather hear that both teams are fine and producing something, even if it's not this crossover.

  • 2 weeks later...

This isn't too surprising. Both developers are used to doing things a certain way, and they know that their way creates a quality product. So, it makes sense that they would be butting heads. It also wouldn't be too surprising if it was cancelled, or at the very least, on hiatus. Atlus has more important things to be working on anyway.

The game is going to get released and will bomb because of disagreements on both ends or they'll just cancel it now. Either outcome seems bleak to me.

Breaking this news to one of my friends is gonna break his heart. He loves Shin Megami Tensei (Persona more than the others, but he loves all of them) and he likes Fire Emblem to. When all of the gang got together to play 3DS, everyone was either playing Monster Hunter or Smash Bros multiplayer except for him. He was playing the shit out of Persona Q!

This is gonna make him really depressed...
