Louisiana law requires sex offenders to list status on social media sites

I think this is a good idea, but I have my doubts how easy it'll be to actually enforce. I mean, what are you gonna do, check the entire list of sex offenders on Facebook?

That being said, I think blocking a limit on sex offenders' use of the internet is kind of alarming. Of course you'd try to prevent these people from going on social media sites and chat rooms, etc. Personally, I'd prefer seeing a complete cut off of offenders' internet, because who are they kidding, they love to use the internet to lure kids. In my opinion, they gave up the right to use the internet when they started to harass kids. I mean, sure, you have offenders that wait by schools and stuff, but there's an awful lot who use the internet to catch their prey. Take that away, and that severely limits their options. Of course, this goes back to how you're going to actually enforce this.

I strongly approve of the concept that once someone breaks the law, they shouldn't be entitled to all sorts of privileges and amenities the rest of us take for granted living in a free society. That being said, I doubt the court system and bleeding hearts like the ACLU see it the same way.

Unless you can find a way for parole officers to do this sort of thing -- and in general, parole officers are overwhelmed with the workload they already have -- I don't see how it would work. Even if it did.... I fully expect an appeals court to strike down this law when the inevitable challenge is filed.

Kind of worthless.

I have a big issue with these sex offender lists- obviously, if you're a sex offender you're though of as an old creepy man with a little boy. But sometimes it's an 18 year old guy with a 17 year old girl, and after they break up she reports him and he gets arrested and can't prove his innocence, then lives the rest of his life with a big orange sign in his yard saying he's a pedophile. I think that every 10 years, the government has to prove that the person still belongs on the list of sex offenders, and is still a threat to society. If someone is a real, serious threat to society for the rest of their life, why aren't they in jail?

You also forgot the inclusion of the drunk taking a leak outside, getting caught and then being charged with public indecency. Although poor decision making, they shouldn't be also included on the sex offender list, but they are, and have to go through life categorized the same as a child porn king.

We need to revamp what we determine "sex offenders" before a law like this ever takes place. Like Sammy and PSX have stated, there are so many ridiculous ways you can be put on a sex offender list that it makes absolutely no sense to force people to put something on their personal profile on a website. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for the actual sex offenders and child molesters to have to live with what they've done for the rest of their lives, but when you can be naked in your own house and a trespassing kid sees you naked and reports you to the police and they put you on the sex offender list, that's wrong. Or you're 16 dating a 15 year old (16 is the age on consent in Ky) and the parents find out and charge you, you are not a sex offender and shouldn't be put on a list for the rest of your life.

I think serious sex offenders should just be barred from social sites. Kinda like how they can't get too close to schools and stuff like that.

You're too kind...personally I believe they should be castrated with a dull, rusty steak knife. With that as a first warning, I don't believe we'd need up the ante for stage two repeat offenders very often.

Then we can hardboil them and paint them pretty colors for Easter. Brilliant!
