visighost
Self-introduction: Hi! I'm visighost, a run-of-the-mill middle-aged gamer who's now been playing games for... over 30 years now? Gosh. I started off on a VIC-20, moving on to a ZX-81, TRS-80, Amiga 500, CDTV, Dreamcast, NES, and... pretty much all iterations of the Sony consoles since. I've started caring about trophies around 2017, as dispoable income allowed me to broaden the scope of what I've been purchasing, and registering on this site made checking progression a sort of addiction. I've always touched pretty much all genres, from racers to RPGs, but the realities of having three kids, and the lack of sleep that comes with it, means I currently favour shorter games that I can drop and go back to without being utterly confused by controls and scenario. The project: I have an ever growing backlog problem. I usually complete between 10 and 20 games a month, but tend to buy twice as many (insert side-track rant on consumerism - I know it makes no sense. But I find pleasure in browsing and buying, it encourages smaller studios, the environmental footprint of digital purchases isn't that big, and I'm not going into debt or anything, so there). Of these games, most have a limited online presence (i.e. reviews or guides). So here's what I propose: Help me out... and help yourselves? Pick games you're curious about, and I'll try my best to boot up a different one every day, earning at least one trophy (completion ratio be damned) if possible. I'll then give you my über-biased, postmodern first impressions. I don't know if I'm any good at it, but I do have experience writing about culture, though mostly on music and film. As I find myself not doing enough of it these days, this will hopefully bring some balance to my life and... be fun for a handful of people? Suggestions on the format and what would be useful are obviously welcome! The available games: My backlog currenty (at the beginning of October 2020) stands at 1194 games across PS4 and Vita, 766 of which I haven't earned a single trophy for. I have a nice Google speadsheet that includes my progression, estimated time to complete games, etc., but the format doesn't appear to allow for copy-pasting, so you'll find the name-only list in the spoiler tag below. I'll update it every month. In any case, thanks for reading, and looking forward to see if anyone's into the idea! visi Spoiler 10 Second Ninja X 101 Ways to Die 18 Floors 2Dark 8-Bit Armies 8-Bit Hordes 8-Bit Invaders! 88 Heroes 99Vidas A Bastard's Tale A Boy and his Blob A Fisherman's Tale A Hole New World A Pixel Story A Rose in the Twilight A Way Out A Winter's Daydream Absolute Drift: Zen Edition Absolver Abyss Odyssey Ace Banana Ace of Seafood Aces of the Luftwaffe Aces of the Luftwaffe Squadron Action Henk Adr1ft Aegis Defenders AereA Aeterno Blade Age of Zombies Agents of Mayhem Ages of Mages: The Last Keeper AirshipQ Akiba's Trip: Undead & Undressed Albert & Otto: The Adventure Begins Alchemic Jousts Alien Isolation Alien Shooter Alienation Along Together American Fugitive Amnesia Collection Amplitude Anima: Gate of Memories Animal Force Animal Super Squad Anniversary Collection Arcade Classics Anodyne Anomaly 2 Anthem Ape Escape 2 Apex Construct Apex Legends Apocalypse Rider Apotheon Aqua Kitty: Milk Mine Defender DX Arca's Path Arcade Archives: Renegade Arcade Game Series: Dig Dug Arcade Game Series: Galaga Arcade Game Series: Ms. Pac-Man Arcade Game Series: Pac-Man Arcana Heart 3 Love Max!!!!! visighost
Day 1 Ara Fell: Enhanced Edition Current player count: 282 Platinum rarity: 30.85% What is it?: Turn based 16-bit rpg Played: Maybe 3 hours total over 2-3 days. At the end of Chapter 1 (of 5). Guides: There's one on Xbox Achievements, but I'm using the walkthrough on Gamefaqs. It's extremely complete. If you'd rather play without, there are only two missables: one related to difficulty (you need to play on Expert) and one to your choice of a side-quest reward. There are teleportation crystals all around, so you could easily play blind and then backtrack around to collect everything in one playthrough. Trophies: I only got one, for collecting 100 items. Overall, the list is very much a top-everything list: get all relics, finish all quests, get all classes, etc. Thoughts: I hadn't heard of the game before picking it up on a sale last month. The few reviews I'd seen were favorable, praising the story and music. The latter is indeed striking: lush orchestra with beautiful chorals (well, solos?), which is a departure from what is usually associated with 16-bit games, but worked perfectly with the atmosphere of the game. The rest is perfectly serviceable up to now: - the story hasn't really picked up yet, but the dialogues are funny without being trite; - you can see monsters and therefore somewhat select the random encounters you want; - fights aren't overly long; - boss fights require a good mix of skills (on Expert anyhow); - loading throughout is very fast; - you can save anywhere. All in all, I'm really enjoying it and it's likely one I'll play till the end! Edited October 23, 2020 by visighost
visighost
Day 2 Link-a-Pix Deluxe Current player count: 98 (vita NA version) Platinum rarity: 54.08% What is it?: Clue-linking puzzle Played: Maybe 10 hours total over 2 weeks. Completed it. Guides: @knoef_NL made one. It would be boring to use it for solutions, but it does tell you which puzzles are needed for trophies. Trophies: Linked to finishing puzzles with specific images or size, and not using the fix option on one puzzle. Nothing remotely difficult or missable. Thoughts: It follows the lazy but addictive Lightwood Games formula: that same one song they use in every game, same UI, same colours. Clue-linking puzzles mean you have to draw out lines between two squares using a set number of steps. You have to figure out which square matches with which, using what path. There are 240 puzzles included (half in colour, half monochrome), but you only need to complete 24 for the platinum. Mind you, doing them legitimately might take you up to an hour for the larger ones. Overall, an unpretentious, great time killer, great bathroom game. Neocarleen
Damn Visi, did you buy the whole PlayStation store?! ? Since you’re offering, could you try Monochrome Order and Walden, a game? I bought them both on sale, but am hesitant to start them because there aren’t any trophy guides/roadmaps online anywhere.

Will do! I think there were guide elements for Monochrome Order on rpginsanity and maybe TrueAchievements? But it definitely looks like one of the more complex Kemco games. re: the backlog size, yeah, it’s kind of embarassing - enough so that I feel the need to justify it. I’m not a hoarder, but I do get carried away with my collections, to my wife’s dismay (you should see my records... lol). I’m also a total sucker for sales - most of the games in there I got for $10 or less over the years... I don’t drink or go out much, but I spend what I have on my hobbies, regardless of the logic!
visighost
Day 3 Ziggurat Current player count: 4813 (NA version) Platinum rarity: 2.62% What is it?: Rogue-like FPS Played: 1 full run, 1 partial. Roughly 1.5h total. Guides: I used the guide on pstrophies, but it's apparently slightly outdated as an update added more characters, weapons, etc. Trophies: Most are related to kills or collecting new weapons and perks. It doesn't look too hard as you need to complete the game at least a dozen times anyhow (playthroughs lasting an hour or so). Two will be tricky: finish the game on hard, and finish a level without getting hit. Thoughts: Ziggurat is one of those games that periodically pops up for dirt cheap during sales. I must have added it to my backlog years ago - and regret not booting it before now. It's unpretentious, runs well, and is great for quick bouts of shooting baddies - with spells instead of guns, for once. It obviously has strong Heretic vibes (yes, I'm old), which strummed that nostalgic chord with me. I spent my time on the game playing a run at normal, dying at the 2nd boss, but breezed through my second on easy - only facing a challenge at the final boss. Curious to see how it will play out at higher difficulties with more weapons and perks unlocked, and if the new characters will offer enough variety to make me want to play through it 15 times... Thank you to @starcrunch061 for the recommendation! Edited October 23, 2020 by visighost
starcrunch061
I don’t know if you’ll make it through the absurd number of play through s for the plat, but the later perks are pretty awesome.

Insane number? I read you can actually just start a run and die right away to unlock a few perks. Rinse and repeat to get them all. Boring, but faster... or is that something they changed post-patch? You can certainly do that, but you’ll still have to finish it around 20 times for characters, difficulty runs, etc. also, sometimes nothing unlocks on a quick death run. I’m through about 8 runs, though I do have the Easy Peasy trophy as well.
visighost
Day 4 Kawaii Deathu Desu Current player count: 75 (vita version) Platinum rarity: 30.67% What is it?: Click-puncher Played: All characters that have a trophy sets, likely 6-7 hours? Just got the platinum. Guides: No guide, but I put my tips, supplemented by others', on this site's forums Trophies: All are grind-related. Basically, purchase characters and kill fans till all trophies unlock for them, then move on to the next one Thoughts: I was expecting something in the vein of Kung Fury, Chicken Assassin, or even the new One Finger Death Punch 2, all games with two buttons (punch left, punch right) but sadly this game was nowhere as fun. There is no variety whatsoever to the action, all characters play exactly the same, enemies are identical other than their health bar, and to top it all trophies are still glitchy after a few patches and the game still crashes from time to time. Oh, it is addictive for sure, as many mindless games are! And it is cheap ($5-6CAD?), but there's a reason the platinum percentage is relatively low despite the simplicity. I'd stick with the games mentioned above - even Iron Snout is better, if you want to keep to the vita. visighost
Sick kids, busy work, and I'm already behind. I checked out a few other games, but also got playing some old ones that won't lead to trophies before a while (2nd Prey walkthrough, The Witness (it's hard!), Broforce hard run)... Day 5 Walden, A Game Current player count: 235 Platinum rarity: 14.47% What is it?: Walking Simulator Played: An hour or two, going for the trophy that implies not going to town, and those for recurring activities Guides: No formal guide, but pst has tips for each trophy in the comments, which I'm using. Trophies: Imply two runs, one without going to town. The grindy ones aren't so bad except for the boat rides, which take forever and require regular controller inputs. Thoughts: I was expecting a run-of-the-mill, artsy walking simulator, but this one seems to also have survival elements thrown in. That being said, it looks like you can't actually die - I let myself pass out of exhaustion and I just woke up in my cabin. Not sure what the point is. Artificial tension in an otherwise peaceful environment where you identify plants and animals? It started out as a fairly enjoyable experience, walking around and basking in the sights, but it got sort of boring pretty quickly. I'd argue Firewatch is much better in that regards (or any recent big-budget action-adventure game like HZD, Tomb Raider or Ass Creed, really). Not knowing Thoreau, on whose experience this is based, probably didn't help. I also read it gets much more interesting once you actually go to town (self-defeating trophy idea by the devs, then). Will likely get back to it eventually, but would recommend a number of other games of the same genre before this one. Thanks to @Neocarleen for the recommendation. I also played an hour of Monochrome Order last week, will try and write up my first impressions for that one as well. Joe Dubz
I am in the mood for a new roguelike/lite, and Flinthook looked pretty interesting!! Would love to hear some feedback about that! Also, I have already played it, but you should def check out Death Road to Canada. That game was such a blast, but it is very much a challenge and a bit of a grind for the plat, just a fair warning ? Would you also recommend this? (P.S. I must be old too, because I remember Heretic very well ) I tried Death Road to Canada with a friend some time back - only for a very short time, we got creamed and I haven't touched it since. I see there's a guide now, but it indeed looks like a significant time investment. One day! Flinthook looks fun - I saw one of my kids play it and it seems smooth. I liked the dev's other games (Mercenary Kings and Curses N Chaos), and they're local! Will add it to the list, thanks for asking. I would recommend Ziggurat, but with some caveats (I've played another run or two since I wrote the first impressions): you'll see pretty much all the game has to offer after a 1-hour run, except for some bosses (there are 3 possibilities for each level, I believe). If you're going for all the trophies, you'll need to play the game... 18 times? 15 characters on easy, 1 on normal, 1 with the same character on hard (assuming you don't die - hard looks... hard!), and also 1 where you die during the last boss fight. You should get a lot of the grinding trophies during natural completion, and it IS fun, but... better know what you're getting in for? (Ah! Glad I'm not alone for Heretic! I remember enjoying it more than Doom... Would like to see it ported as well!)

I will make sure to review it a bit more, just to be safe. I'm the type that tends to get bored with repetitive things, but if the game is interesting enough I don't mind the grind! Esp if it is enjoyable. Anyway, cheers mate and looking forward to following along with your progress! ?

visighost
Day 6 Masters of Anima Current player count: 237 (NA version) Platinum rarity: 7.59% What is it?: Action RPG/RTS Played: An hour or so, first mission on Apprentice (easy) level twice as I didn't get S rank the first time... Guides: Followed the TrueAchievements walkthrough. It appears very complete. Trophies: Will Imply two runs as there is a speedrun and I'm not sure if it's based on total time played or a total of your best times. Doesn't look too demanding, unclear why the completion percentage is low at this point... Thoughts: I had fun! The scenario is nothing to write home about, nor are the graphics or music, but it controls smoothly, fights are fun, the summon mechanics quickly become intuitive (keeping in mind I haven't had to manage different types of summons yet) and there doesn't appear to be grinding involved. The summons are really the core of the game and bring a RTS aspect to it: you accumulate anima (magic?) going through levels, and use it to summon various troops, which you broadly direct (attack! push!) in order to progress, supplementing their actions with your own bashing and various skills. The first level wasn't too large, and it was easy enough to explore and gather collectibles (especially if you use a guide, eh). To note: I usually hate speedruns, but I read the trophy for this one isn't very demanding as you will almost naturally hit the sweet spot. All in all, likely not a game I would recommend at full price, but with plenty of value if you get it on sale. Thanks to @MarcioAP1 for asking about this one. visighost
Day 7 Flinthook Current player count: 2379 Platinum rarity: 2.48% What is it?: Roguelike platformer Played: A few hours, beating the first boss and going through a few ships towards the second. Guides: No guide proper, but there are a tips out there (gameplay.tips, Steam). That being said, a lot of it boils down to collecting everything, and beating bosses with a high score/quickly, so not much more is needed. Trophies: Level up, get all perks, beat bosses fast and with a high score. Standard roguelike fare. Time-consuming, potentially challenging, but certainly achievable. Thoughts: I really enjoyed Tribute Games' Mercenary Kings and Curses n Chaos (still missing a last trophy for that one... It's haaaard!), so I was looking forward to trying out Flinthook (says the guy who has had it in his backlog for a year or two). I wasn't disappointed! The game is a roguelike platformer, with procedurally generated ships you have to run through in search of bounty, leading to better perks, leading to more successful runs, leading to tougher ships, etc. The formula certainly isn't new, but it is well executed. I believe the low platinum rate is likely simply due to the fact there's really no way to cheese this game: Your perks will make your life easier, but you'll definitely need to "get gud" before long, and there certainly is a challenge to the mastery of simultaneously swinging by your hook, time-slowing, and shooting around. That being said, it never felt unfair, and even if you die (which you will), you'll have something to show for it as bounty translates to permanent XP and additional perks. I also really enjoyed their trademark visual style and animation. I'll be getting back to that one. Thanks @Joe Dubz for the recommendation! I played some more Masters of Anima, @MarcioAP1, and found it even more fun when you start juggling the different summons. It introduces strategy in when and how you use the various troops (even on Apprentice level, as you still want those A ranks) that was absent in the first level. I really appreciate the detail you go into with your review of the game, you have quite the knack for it ? After your thorough review, the game sounds like a good challenge, but fair. Not to mention this is one of my favorite genres in gaming!! Will be picking this up soon without a doubt, thank you kind sir!
visighost
Day 8 The Mummy Demastered Current player count: 2338 Platinum rarity: 31.69% What is it?: 16-bit metroidvania Played: Got the platinum in just under 5 hours. Could potentially be achieved in a bit less if following a guide from the start? Guides: Explored without one at first, then followed the guide on this very site. Very well done, and the map is especially useful! Trophies: Standard fare. The majority is linked to collectibles, with the no-death run being the only one you have to be careful about (but you can copy your save in-game as a back-up). Thoughts: I've played quite a number of 16-bit metroidvania in the last few months, and this definitely brings a bias to my impressions of the game. The Mummy Demastered is perfectly functional, and does not outlast the enjoyment you'll get from the relatively short single-walkthrough platinum. You can play blind without being afraid of missing anything (something that ranks high in my enjoyment of games), there's easy ways to warp back to the various areas, and if you're not a fan of the movie, you'll be glad to hear the scenario is non-existent. The music, animation, boss fights, weapon variety, are all... fine. But you've seen it all before with value-added. And if you haven't? Well, then try The Messenger! Try Iconoclasts! Try Timespinner! Axiom Verge! Chasm! La Mulana! The competition is fierce for metroidvanias, even when solely keeping to retro-styled aesthetics. I'm afraid being fine doesn't cut it anymore. I certainly appreciate your honesty in that regard! No worries tho, one look at my completion % and you will quickly realize I have no problems with dropping a game if I don't like it ? I am for sure planning on picking it up at some point, I just don't like to have too many games going at once or I quickly lose interest ? As for your next one, I say you take the I am Bread challenge with me!! Super-low rarity plat, I think it was 0.33% here on PSNP last time I looked. I am really considering going for it! Super-low rarity plat, I think it was 0.33% here on PSNP last time I looked. I am really considering going for it! Challenge accepted! Well, to try the game out anyway. Will see about the platinum... I have the same "problem" - I sometimes drop games for whatever reason, and it takes a lot to bring me back even if I had a great time with them in the first place. I see that you stopped Hyper Light Drifter - I personally LOVED it, but there's no way I can get the last few trophies unless a way to cheese it is discovered. I'm actually curious if the fast load times of the PS5 will allow for easier save back-ups for deathless runs... As it stands, it takes long minutes just for my online saves to appear, and that alone turns me off. Should probably use a USB stick... You look like you've tried out a bunch of games I want to get into at some point: Songbringer, Rain World, Bug Fables, Pier Solar... Enjoyed them?
