My Journey to all Final Fantasy Platinums (sort of)

To preface this, this is my first post and I've looked around and at the rules and I can't tell if this post is breaking any - This post is so that I can share my journey with others that may be interested. Please let me know if it breaking any rules is and I'll make any changes or delete the post  Also there will be spoilers for all the FF and FF related games ahead, I've tried to keep them to a minimum. Also, I'll be going through and making it more readable soon too. I know it's just a masive wall of text at the moment haha

 

My Journey to all Final Fantasy Platinums (sort of)

 

The preface (Again) this whole journey I’d like to talk about the timing of it all and then I’ll go into my history with the realm of Final Fantasy and what sparked the idea for me. It’s late 2022 and it’s the Steam winter sale. I purchase the FFVII Remake Intergrade, excited to play but I have work the next day so I don’t load it up. At work the next day - surprise! You’re getting a bonus for good performance and being a team player (pat my back please). 
 

This is when the light bulb clicks. The bonus is enough so that after Jan’s pay I can just afford a PS5 with my disposable income. I’ve budgeted everything else already, I can treat myself. So I return the unopened FFVII Remake Intergrade and set my eyes on the big fancy purchase. I’m not a big fan of making big purchase though and I have to always set myself a goal to accomplish so that I can treat myself. For this I’m being lenient, I’m hyped for Hogwarts Legacy and I have that pre-ordered already, so my goal is to 100% that game before the new purchase and the beginning of my journey. Depending on where and when or if this little document ever gets posted that point was either before or after I 100% the game. If it’s after which is more likely then I shall add short review of Legacy to this

So the idea for this hasn’t started recently. When I got my PS4 back in 2015 I got it for the sole purpose of playing Kingdom Hearts again. I enjoyed the 1.5 and 2.5 remix so much that I got the Platinum trophy in KH1 after many hours of struggle - I’m not very good at action rpgs haha. Getting the Platinum in KH1 was thrilling! The planning and beating the game in less than 16 hours. Spending 1 run getting as powerful as possible and the next just speeding through on my little skill. It was very fun. Prior to this I was an achievement hunter so I’ve 1000/1000 a few games and the feeling was the same. Accomplishment. I then turned to Platinum KH2 but life got in the way and I set the game and the console aside. 
 

2017. XII The Zodiac Age. This I think is the time that reignited my passion for Final Fantasy. When I was young and FFXII was fresh out I played the game with my friend day in and day out we’d set up our little square CRTs in the same room on opposite walls to avoid spoilers and we’d order in pizza and just chill all weekend playing the game. With Zodiac age I relived those memories and strived for the platinum until I had to move city for Uni and I was only able to take my PC for course work. Before I moved however I’d started FFXIV and this is where my consistent passion for Final Fantasy was born. There is so much love for the lore of the FF universe in that game and you can tell that the game actually respects your time so I dropped WoW and have played FFXIV on and off since. This constant connection to FF has kept the fire burning low in me to replay the history of the FF mainline games and with the upcoming release of the pixel remaster 1-6 collection, FFXVI and Remake Part 2 coming out this year all the pieces have come together to make this the year that I attempt to get all the trophies (but lets be real it’ll take me a couple years probably theres so many good games coming out this year that I wanna play as well haha)
 

This then all circles back around to today. 13/01/2023. It’s been 8 days since I returned 7 remake and I’m on the hunt for a PS5 that’s in stock and a decent price. I’d like to buy it as soon as possible even if I’m not starting the challenge so that as soon as I’ve finished Hogwarts Legacy I can boot up the first game. Which ironically will likely be Stranger of Paradise on the same xbox that I’ll be playing Hogwarts legacy on. Hear me out now… I already own SoP and I don’t want to buy it again on PS5 when I really just want to play the non spin offs. I would like to try and play them through number order which means waiting for the pixel collection to come out which may be a few months away. If the case is that I 100% Legacy and SoP before the collection come out what I will do is start working through the Kingdom Hearts games as they’re also a part of this challenge for me
 

My first update to this will be when I’ve purchase the PS5 and set it up, from there I will give you a brief on what FF/KH games I’ve already played and how many trophies are completed 
 

01/03/2023 - So I didn’t realise from when I thought of this and typed out the above that the list of games would be tied to my PSN account and some of the games have only come out on PS4, but this does make sense. So I’ve ordered a new power cable for my PS4 that should arrive today and I’ll then be able to figure out the Trophy situation. It’s very tempting to create a fresh PSN for this as I want the games that are to be played just the Final Fantasy games and also FF adjacent games like Theatrythm and Kingdom Hearts. I’ve done a little research and there is a released leaderboard for people like myself who are striving for platinum in all the FF and adjacent games and I like the cut of their jibs but they’re purists, there’s duplicate games on there, theres the original FFVII on there. Basically I have a vision and while I will submit my platinums on there for the cool badges and this stream of thought will also be posted on their eventually in some fashion I will be limiting myself a little here because I have a yearning. Before I put the list down on paper though a quick little tangent on my tangent. 
 

The games and my PSN profile. I know that I’ll have games on there already from when I used to play my PS4 when I was younger, and I know that the profile will have KH1 if not already 100% then close, and I don’t really want to spend too long on the “adjacent” games, but what I’m waiting for is the quintessential 1-16 play through with caveats. 11 and 14 are a no go. I play 14 on my PC and while I’ve met the requirements for most of the trophies for both lists I don’t really want to spend the money to make that happen when I’m not gunna be playing them. So this semi-tangent leads me almost to the list and with my biggest elephants. 
 

Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster I-VI, FFVII Remakes and subsequent games, and FFXIII. The Pixel remaster isn’t out yet, this isn’t that much of a biggy as I don’t think I’ll have 100% Hogwarts Legacy and then done a KH game before it comes out, so waiting for that isn’t an issue. 7Remake is out, and 7Rebirth comes out this year. Realistically if I’m looking to 100% them in order then this also wont be an issue as I’ll probably get to the 7 remakes when the last one comes out. XIII, XIII-2 and Lightning Returns can only be played on PS3. This means I’ll need to find my PS3 somewhere if I still even have it, hope it works and mess up my entertainment center. 
 

What these 3 revelations have brought to my attention is that I’ve got 2 experiences going on here. I’ve got a 100% them all experience and I’ve got a complete all the stories experience. These two can’t be had in order in a nice little package on just one console. This realisation means that I’m throwing caution to the wind and I’ll play what comes up when. This leads me to my list and the consoles and then the order that I think I’ll end up playing them in.

This then leads me into order of play. First is complete Hogwarts Legacy and purchase myself a PS5. As I’m not going for a 100% in all the games first as it’s not currently possible to get them all on PS5, what I would like to do is play them in story order as much as possible so I believe from the list what will end up happening is something like Final Fantasy Origin after HL to get me to the release of the Pixel Remaster. FF I to start me off then once that’s complete XVI will probably be out, this will then go XVI into FFII then in order from there. That’s the plan. It could honest depend a lot on how long it takes me to 100% HL, and then I might feel like 100% SoP before XVI comes out depending on timing. Then I know for a fact that I’ll be playing Theatrhythm as one of the games that I purchase with the PS5. 

Taking the pressure off to 100% the games before moving on to the next one really frees me up mentally here to just enjoy the games. So I’m actually happy that they’re not all available to play on PS5 in some form yet. To add to this, knowing that I’m not going to have time to do the KH games which I adore before the Pixel Remaster comes out probably means that I’ll be playing them either alongside or in between the games to get a genre break for the first 8 games. I like turn based games but I can find with them that I sometimes will just rush through the story to get them done as the gameplay isn’t always engaging enough for me personally. Right, that’s that for this update. I’m going to go play some HL, if I get enough time today, then I will also type up what I’m going to do about my PSN profiles as well once the wire arrives
 

03/03/23 - PS4 cord arrived. PS4 won’t connect to WIFI without booting into safe mode and rebuilding database. PS4 require first party controller for that. Not shelling out, PS4 goes back in storage.

What I have learned though is that I wont be using my old PSN (averageAfro) as it’s got 5 games on it that will just mess up the pretty list. So I created a new one - FinalFro. What’s good though is that I haven’t platinumed KH1 like I thought I had. What’s bad is that I already own the KH all in one package digitally on the PSN, which is a tad annoying considering I’ll probably end up buying it again in physical form! Maybe like Xbox if you download it on one profile you can still play on the other. I’ll test this once the PS5 has been purchased. HL update - Got a lot of collectables to get to 100% the game, but I’m enjoying it!
 

09/03/2023 - Got a new job role that’s not as intensive as the previous one so I’ve actually been able to play a lot more of HL than I thought I’d be able to and I’ve completed it! 1000/1000 gamerscore and I’m please! Got my PS5 coming tomorrow as well as FF Theatrythm FLB, and I’ve decided on a play order. Even though I’ve ordered the PS5 and I am going to go SoP on the Series X into FF1 from Pixel remaster into FF16 and then from there into the correct release order of the games. This may mean that I only get maybe a couple weeks to play FF1 but I’ll go back to it after 16 and I’ll be playing Theatrythm on the PS5 when I want some downtime from SoP. I remember struggling with the combat a bit in SoP as I’ve never played a Team Ninja game before but I think I can get enough hours in to improve enough to get the 1000/1000 in it.
 

As this is technically the start point of the journey I'll be adding the games to this first post in the order that I've completed them with my thoughts and reviews and will check off a list at the bottom as well

My thoughts about Hogwarts Legacy and Stranger of Paradise before the reviews
 

For HL - Mid story, Mid gameplay, phenomenal world and presentation. Strip away the Harry Potter furnishings and you have an average game that has been perfectly tuned to be as accessible as possible for anyone to play but would be boring AF. The buggy achievements were a struggle to content with but I got them all with 59 hours of gameplay ?

For SoP - Good story, amazing gameplay and amazing world design. The Dimensions being the different games in the series took me about 15 hours of playing to realise but once I did it made the game so much better in my eyes. I struggled with the gameplay for the first 10 hours, but once I slowed down I figured it out and came to love it. This game will forever have made me better at Action games and it’ll hold a special place in my thoughts for that. Got all the achievements with 51 hours on the clock - Although this time is probably closer to 44-45 because I played this a lot at work and kept forgetting that the pause button doesn’t pause the game...

The Reviews

 

Final Fantasy I: 
I enjoyed this game. It was a lot of fun! It's definately a blast from the past, you can feel the age of the systems and while this isn't a bad thing, this did bring down my total enjoyment of the game. I really like the graphics, I'm a sucker for pixel art so I knew going in that I was going to like the enviroments and the character/mob sprites. It's a charming game and that's pretty much where my enjoyment stops. It's hard not to look at the game through the lens of what we currently have to play and that sticking point really threw me through a loop when trying to sum my thoughts up. So I'm not going too haha. I enjoyed the experience of playing this peice of gaming history, but I wouldn't do it again. 

7/10 - Based purely on my appreciation of what it was for the times and the franchise is spawned.

Ah, I will eventually! I didn't make this very clear. At the moment this is fully just a sentimental reason to not play on PS4 right away and a little bit of a financial one too. My Fiance with her first bonus once we got together bought me the VII an VIII bundle pack because I made an offhand comment about wanting it and it meant a lot that she thought about me and used her earning for it. Unfortuantely I've never got around to playing it though. 

I think to get the story I'll play the switch version and then I'll purchase the the PS4 version for the trophies further down the line.

Thank you! This has been bouncing around in my head for a while and I've never had the set up to do it, I think it will take me a good old while to get it done, but the journey so far has been a blast so I'm hopeful that I'll be able to do it. 

Thankfully from what I've seen, the games that people have the most struggle with completeing are actually the ones that I've enjoyed the most because I played them when I was younger, so I'm actually looking forward to X and XIII. I've not looked at the trophy lists yet though so that I don't phsych myself out for anything coming up haha

I loved XV, it's a bad game in terms of a AAA with the cut content, but I was able to get past that. I enjoyed the journey but not the destination

I find it funny that out of all the FFs you plan on hitting, this game gets the shaft. Then again, it was the worst of the XIII trinity so I don't blame you. The attempt to capitalize on X-2's Dresspheres fell flat.

 

Will prob do the rest of the Pixel Remasters. I already have VII and VIII, don't plan on touching IX, X or X-2, can't do XIII or its bad sequels, and not really interested in either XV or XVI, despite the hype of the latter. Definitely will complete the World of FF.

 

Also, I don't care if they have FF characters in them, Kingdom Hearts series isn't a Final Fantasy Spinoff. It's a Disney property.

Hey, woah, hey. Don't slander KH!

While at heart I think you're correct, characters from FF make a common appearance and I'd argue that the main characters that are origianl characters are FF characters more than Disney characters.

Honestly this is my main reservation about Lightning returns. XIII and -2 were good IMO because they weren't centered around the weakest character.

Ah that's so cool! Don't know how I missed this when it's one of the first links that comes up when you google something like "all FF trophies" ? As soon as I have my first platinum I'll join in on that

I've been making good progress on FF1 - decided to to just use a guide for the whole game and I'm about half way through now. I think with a guide this is an easier Plat. I mostly play at work in my down time so my milage varies each day but managed to get about an hour in today haha!

As a little side note, I've realised that my trophies on PSN Profiles aren't up to date, do these just not update often or have I done something to break it?

It's because they made it beyond easy. There's hardly any story either so there's just nothing left to grip you.

 

I remember in the 90s they released Mystic Quest because they thought the West was too stupid and crap at Video games to play a proper RPG. Fast forward to now and wow... Compare ff1 pixel remaster to Mystic Quest and Mystic Quest is miles harder. I guess it just shows how easy games are now.

KH2 had great story beats and great mechanics and some challenging boss fights(I died to Xaldin 1 multiple times when I first played it, he was my archenemy )... but the trophy list for KH2 Final Mix is not for me because I have trouble dealing with having to complete Critical Mode where even normal Large Bodies one-shot me.

 

I do like watching people playing the KH2 randomizer mod(not on PS4, on PC only because you can't mod the PS4 version) but I wish they refined the other KH randomizers.

Speaking of randomizers, I've played the Mystic Quest randomizer and found it fun. I love randomizers because there is the chance you will get the best items in the game and breeze eveything, and the chance that you will get nothing good until near the end of the game and have to struggle.

If you buy a premium membership here it updates once per 6 hours or you can update it yourself up to once per minute. It's 100% worth it, it's like $13 for life, no subscription. If you're serious about getting all FF trophies, I recommend premium here if for nothing else but to never have ads lol

I might look into that. I am getting annoyed by the ads that pop up on this forum.

Having beat SoP now and played through a few leavels on the hardest difficulty I feel ready to take on any ARPG on the hardest difficulty. I've finished KH2 on Critical a couple of times, but never have I gone out of the way to do extra side content. I think I may have to start weaving in KH games and get KH1 finished befor FFXVI comes out. I feel the urge haha!

On the note of finishing games, I've now finished FF1, Honestly not got that much to say about it. Platinum was easy following a guide the whole game, it was a nice experience to absorb and I liked the setting and the fights that were actually hard. I got a bit lucky and only spent about 40 mins looking for the Warmech, I actually spent longer (1 hour) looking for the Iron Golem in the chaos shrine!

I still haven't had the time to write up a mini review of HL and SoP, life and work has been busy, but I have added my thoughts on FF1
