I didn't use a service, just used a quick guess based on what a forum like ResetEra sold for. It is a similar thing, no paid staff, both subscription sales and ads.

if the owner doesn't care and it wasn't profitable, would it still be open? It is likely there is a not significant income stream.

Yeah I agree. I'm also a developer and very curious about what backend tech is being used to aggregate and store the trophy stats. Would love to contribute and make a difference. I'd even be happy to carry the on-call pager of need be.
