Netflix Achievements on Xbone

Aaaaand..how many people here have sat through garbage games just to earn some fake trophies? Games like Hannah Montana, Terminator Salvation, Aabs Animals, and the like? Played a game like Crysis 2 once a month for 6 months? Played Twisted Metal for 30 days straight? Left the PS3 on for 24 hours just to pop a trophy in various LittleBIGPlanets?

This is no different. I can almost guarantee you, if Sony did this, 80% of you, at least, would be acting like this was TEH BEST THING EVAR. All they've done is give people a chance to earn some achievements for something they'd probably be doing anyway.

Please. If you're going to hate on the One - do it for a legitimate reason, not some BS about fake achievements that don't really matter in the long run, that don't even affect the player's Gamerscore. This isn't lame.

What's lame is what's going on in this thread right now.

Yeah, free speech really sucks...

Yeah, free speech really sucks...

First of all, what you just replied makes no sense in the context of what you quoted.

Secondly, why is it, the moment someone disagrees and calls a person out on a ridiculous opinion - they want to try and bring up free speech? It's a two way street, in case you don't realize - I have just as much of a right to call the behavior from most of the people in this thread lame [because it is - and it's extremely hypocritical to boot.], as you do to engage in said lame behavior.

And I'm sorry, but complaining about something that genuinely doesn't matter or affect you in anyway is beyond lame. The Xbox One has achievements for Netflix - whoop-de-doo! So what? Does it somehow stop your trophies from mattering to the only person they should really matter to (IE: YOU.)? No.

I mean, come on - the hypocrisy here is as obvious as a cow riding a jetski over Michael Bay-esque explosions.

How can a group, known for grinding out insane requirements by doing asinine things, over and over and over, COMPLAIN about that exact. same. thing?

How, I pray-tell, is watching a movie once a day for a month, any more - or less - entertaining than signing into a game once a day, for the same amount of time? How is rating 25 movies/tv shows, any different from Rating 25 cars in a game like Midnight Club LA? Or watching 5 hours worth of TV shows any different from leaving your PS3/PS4 on for the same amount of time - while you go watch TV instead?

It's not. Not in the least.

Also, try to come up with an actual rebuttal next time, instead of trying to use some bogus Free Speech shield that makes no sense.

Then take it as me responding to your very last line of that statement.

Again opinions. I never said your opinion was wrong, only that you're getting all worked up over OPINIONS.

That's what I started this thread for, to hear people's opinions on the matter, not to hear people's opinions on other people's opinions on the matter.

But yes, you have just as much right to voice your opinion.

I actually think it does affect me directly.

Seeing as Sony only decided to start including trophies after Microsoft came up with their achievements system I can only hope these don't prompt Sony to follow suit.

Again, it doesn't hurt me, I just don't like the idea because it has nothing to do with games.

Given the history you have on this site I'm genuinely confused that you would even say that.

One thing is to actually work for your in-game trophy. Sure there are a lot of trophies you can just bullshit your way into earning, but some of them require some actual skill.

Another is to just start a show and let it play for 10 consecutive episodes.

Unless you're playing Heavy Rain or something similar you can't seriously compare the act of playing a game with watching a movie.

And the point of this thread was never to compare which was more or less entertaining, only about which merits the earning of an actual trophy/achievement.

Then take it as me responding to your very last line of that statement.

"What's lame is what's going on in this thread."

What's going on in this thread is a bunch of people talking about how lame it is to have achievements in something they probably don't even use. What's going on in this thread is people complaining about something that doesn't matter at all.

Thus - it's lame.

And that's what I gave.

"All they've done is give people a chance to earn some achievements for something they'd probably be doing anyway."

"This isn't lame."

Also, at no point was my initial post directed at you - it was directed at the people whining about this. They weren't "giving opinions", they were bashing a console they likely weren't going to buy to begin with for a feature they probably wouldn't even use if they had it. THAT'S what I was responding to, as well as giving my own opinion on the situation.

"You have to be a couch potato to get these"

The complaints like this - coming from people who have spent time being a couch potato to earn a trophy that does nothing.

Also, I'm not worked up - you decided to single me out for some reason [Despite the fact that I'm not the only one to have that same opinion on all this - there are at least 3 other people who posted in this thread saying essentially the same thing - "Why's it matter what they have?"]

What, do you think that just because someone posts an actually thought out response, that means they're worked up? I responded to you because you decided to single me out.

I actually think it does affect me directly.

Seeing as Sony only decided to start including trophies after Microsoft came up with their achievements system I can only hope these don't prompt Sony to follow suit.

Again, it doesn't hurt me, I just don't like the idea because it has nothing to do with games.

Wait.

"I actually think it does affect me directly."

"Again, it doesn't hurt me"

What?

Seriously, what? You just contradicted yourself. How can it affect you directly [Which, honestly, it doesn't - them having achievements for apps, and Sony implementing the same in no way makes your trophies any less valuable. How it would is beyond me. If it does affect you - it's your own fault for letting it.], yet, "not hurt you"?

Also, these consoles haven't been strictly about games since the original Playstation - which doubled as a CD player. Who said achievements/trophies have to be relegated to games anyway? Plenty of apps have their own achievement systems - and quite a few aren't even games, hell the browser I use has reward points for using the thing. They don't do anything - they're just a way of telling who's more active on it.

And again, they don't effect gamerscore - so what does it really matter? If Sony did do this, and they did it in the same way, it'd likely be a trophy list that appears in your list, but doesn't actually effect anything - the trophies would have no value. And you could always hide the list if you don't want it seen - so what's the big deal?

They aren't forced on you. Use Netflix or don't. Earn the achievements or don't - it doesn't matter, because they have no actual bearing on anything.

Given the history you have on this site I'm genuinely confused that you would even say that.

What history? You say that like I've got a bad rap around here or something.

"you can't seriously compare the act of playing a game with watching a movie."

One thing is to do something for entertainment's sake, the other is to do something for entertainment's sake.

That is my point - gaming and movies are both a part of the same thing. Entertainment. not everyone who owns a 360 or PS3, or a One, or a PS4, owns it for gaming. A lot of people [More than you probably realize], own them as a nice, cheap media center. They use them as a high definition movie or TV box - it's why apps like Netflix and Hulu Plus are available on them.

Trophies and Achievements are for personal gratification - nothing more. They don't give you anything, except for the odd chance they might hold a contest based on them, and they don't really mean anything other than being able to say you did something and having proof of it.

E-peen viagra, that's all they really are.

And yeah, there are a few trophies out there that require some skill [GT5's "GT-R Official Record" & Wipeout's "Beat Zico" for instance.] - but the vast majority of trophies are just given out - "Thanks for playing the story, here's a trophy for every chapter!" "What's that? You leveled up a small amount? Have another trophy!"

Truly skill based trophies are very few and far between. Trying to talk about the merits of earning a trophy, when most of them are just given to you is silly.

Yeah, watching 1,000 hours worth of Twitch streams is ridiculous - but so is driving a virtual car around a virtual map for 1,000 virtual miles.

Also, as was pointed out about 3 times - Sony already has something that, according to the people in this thread would be "so pathetic", Trophies for waking up on time. And Wake Up Club was out well before the Xbox One.

And people are trying to boost them!

Yet somehow, Microsoft having achievements in their Xbox One apps is a big deal.

Like I said - hypocrisy.

I personally see no real point in complaining about it or calling it something like lame or stupid, just call it what it is, marketing, as they need to make the Xbox One's apps appeal to a broader audience, and by doing this they draw in achievement hunters. As for those individuals on this post drawing comparisons to Wake Up Club, you're more or less spot on there, as they share two glaring similarities, virtual gain with minimal to no effort & they are apps, plain & simple. I highly doubt Sony would follow suit though, as they have made the PS4 almost solely focus on gaming, whereas the Xbox One has always been touted as an all-in-one entertainment centre of sorts.

If I were to get an Xbox One I would never get these achievements for 2 reasons, firstly, as it was already stated, Netflix is not available in Australia and secondly, if I want to watch something, I'll just put a DVD on.

I'm done arguing with someone who doesn't know that "affect" and "hurt" aren't synonyms.

Please fuck right off this thread.

Happy Thanksgiving.

The PS3 actually has an application out which gives you trophies for watching TV. It was only released in Japan in 2010.

Here's the list:

https://psnprofiles.com/trophies/643-torne

For those who can't read Japanese there is a trophy guide on .org giving you the run down on how to earn these trophies (although they can't be earned outside of Japan):

http://www.ps3trophies.org/game/torne/guide/

So it looks like Sony were the first to do this type of thing back in 2010.
