Trepang²: a FPS similar to the F.E.A.R. series

The F.E.A.R. series may be over, but it seems there's an unofficial spiritual successor in the works. Trepang² is coming in 2022, in development by Trepang Studios and to be published by Team17. I was somewhat let down by F.E.A.R. 3, but T2 looks more in line quality-wise with the Monolith developed games in the series. I like what I've seen of it so far, and hope it also comes to the PS5 and XSX/XSS.

Your main character suffers from amnesia, but gains supernormal combat abilities including the ability to slow time down and go on bullet-time rampages while embarking on a mission of revenge. Like Crysis, you'll even be able to cloak and perform stealth kills.

Bonus points to the devs if this has dual wielding and a weapon that makes enemies "stick around" like the HV Penetrator and Hammerhead.

We need a Fear Remastered Trilogy.

OMG, a thousand times yes. ? One with all the expansions (PM, EP, and F.E.A.R. 2 Reborn where you play as Paxton Fettel, possessing the Replica soldier Foxtrot-813). Even if it doesn't have the MP I'll take it. Go for it, Warner Bros. Games... I would easily let go of $50-60 for this (or even $90-100). Even though F.E.A.R. 3 isn't the best of the trilogy, it's actually still good.

Perseus Mandate and Extraction Point on Playstation would be awesome. It's a shame F.E.A.R. Files never made it's way over. I'm assuming they didn't sell enough on Xbox to justify the transfer? But yeah, they're so great. For me personally, the sound design and atmosphere in both expansions are the best in the series.

We shouldn't hold our breath concerning a remaster though. ? I bet we'd get a full-on remake before anything else. Who knows though, maybe one day Nightdive Studios will swoop in and save the day.

The original F.E.A.R. trilogy still looks pretty good even today. I'd even take a straight port with nothing but 4K resolution and neural upscaled textures (such as ESRGAN method) added. Ray-tracing would be nice, but its absence wouldn't be a deal breaker.

Nightdive is great. Their PS4 versions of Doom 64 and Quake turned out well.

Here's some more T2 gameplay. It's being developed by a team of 4 with help from Upsurge Studios. This is even more ludicrously amazing than the first trailer.

0:06 Kick a flaming enemy away and then... BOOM.

There's some reverse-slide move in there as well.

I think an official F.E.A.R. sequel might not stand a chance against this.

Trepang Studios has a bit of good and bad news. They're going to need a little more time. So this is probably coming out a few months into 2023. At least they're not rushing it. It looks like the time will be put to good use.

Wilson talks about T2's dynamic AI. Enemies can do things like flank, take cover, and watch each other's backs. This has potential to become one of the new GOAT FPS games.

The PC version is out now at $29.99. A "Banger" edition is also available for $34.18 and comes with the soundtrack. Console versions may be $5 more (that's the difference between PS5/Xbox and PC versions of Thymesia, also published by Team17).

Comments on the video look generally positive. One I liked said "more FEAR than doom, with a bit of Crysis". Someone claimed that T2 will be released for PS5 on 20 August 2023, but I'm skeptical of that being the true date. Late 3rd or early 4th quarter sounds likely to me.

EDIT: Just bought this on GOG and am enjoying it. A checkbox in the graphics options allows "insane" settings which are higher than Epic. Nvidia DLSS is supported. T2's install size on disk is around 28.6 GB. There doesn't seem to be ADS- instead, the RMB is used for melees.

When you're at the safehouse, you'll have access to a combat sim. You can play the sim on any difficulty, even above the one you started the game on. Your kills in the sim rack up cash to buy more weapons and other items.
