Popular Post VeganVermithor
Hello VR party people, it’s that time of year again and I 100%ed another batch of games to throw at you in an attempt to breathe life into the VR section of the forum. I can’t remember what madness drove me to do my last post like this with a weird number like 60, but this time around, I’ll go with a much smoother 50. My reviews post from last year with 60 titles: [CLICK]. The VR leaderboard (unfortunately including region-stackers) As always, I'm using a trusty rating of ★ out of 5, for both the game in general, as well as its trophy list. Those ratings and the following ramblings are all totally subjective and I'm happy to be challenged about them. The game rating is something most people are probably familiar with, but the trophy rating is pretty much only useful for trophy hunters, as I reach my conclusions with an arbitrary mix of feelings about needed time, points/platinum or not, ingenuity/fun and how annoying some are. So basically, the more stars, the more inclination a trophy hunter would have to play the game and complete it. The numbers behind the ratings indicate the time it took me to 100% the game. If you are not rushing through a game with maximum efficiency, your times should usually be a bit higher, if you don’t use available guides then sometimes much higher. So, if there is a game on this list that you wanted to get, don’t let my 2 hour completion time make you reconsider immediately, there is usually much more “game” there to play with a casual approach. A rant in regards to trophy hunting in general: Unfortunately, there is a sad trend lately of games releasing with broken trophy lists. In all my time with VR, I have never had so many issues with trophy lists as in the last few months. A lot of the games required to find creative ways to circumvent bugs or to simply hope for patches. The one good thing about it though, is that I got used to jump into discords and interact there more, often times encountering very helpful devs and friendly, albeit tiny communities. I can absolutely recommend you do the same if you have questions about a game for the devs, want to report a bug or find someone for multiplayer etc. Alright, here we go then, I hope you enjoy the read! ---------------------------------- A Fisherman's Tale 🎮 ★★★★☆ 🏆★★★★★ ⏱1.5 A beloved classic, ported from PSVR1. You puzzle your way through a story/dream, engagingly narrated by an old fisherman. The concept is very unique, as you play as a fisherman puppet in a lighthouse model, interacting with larger and smaller versions of yourself and the environment to progress through the chapters. The game is quite short, but as with all point-and-click-adventures (remember Day of the Tentacle and Monkey Island?), you will have a MUCH longer and more fun adventure if you play the first attempt without a guide. 1-2 hours is just a speedrun. The game is beautifully crafted and still holds up very well after the port to PSVR2. I also find it a bit more compelling than the successor, Another Fisherman’s Tale, which couldn’t quite deliver the same level of coziness and immersion for me. The trophy list is great for hunters, a cool mix of chapter completions, collectibles and miscellaneous challenges. You can’t blindly rush through, but all of the tricky stuff can be looked up on the internet. Affected: The Manor 🎮 ★★☆☆☆ 🏆★★☆☆☆ ⏱2.5 A short haunted house horror game with many rough edges and tons of jump scares. In the main game mode there are two different paths through the house with several different horror encounters and then two more game modes besides the house itself (a gauntlet “runner” mode and a darkness run through another part of the house), so there is enough here to warrant a second star. If you are susceptible to this kind of stuff, you might even briefly enjoy it, but the presentation didn’t convince me. I was more annoyed with the movement speed than able to feel much excitement. The visuals are definitely subpar for PSVR2 standards, too. The trophy list has no platinum and only one gold. Because the game is a port from a PSVR1 game and I believe you get both versions with your purchase, I was able to get the disappointing list done in 2.5 hours after experiencing the PSVR1 version first. Alvo 🎮 ★★★☆☆ 🏆☆☆☆☆☆ ⏱183 FPS multiplayer shooter, CoD style, that is around for a few years now and got ported from PSVR1. The game is fast paced, instant-respawn in most modes and a core of loyal veterans keep the playerbase going. Also, the devs love their game and are constantly working on updates and improvements. That being said, Alvo lost a few strong points it had on PSVR1. Matchmaking issues, a bit of jank, mediocre graphics and dead maps/game modes weren’t much of an issue when there wasn’t any competition, but today we have Pavlov and Breachers, both much better games, and even Crossfire Sierra Squad if you feel like playing together instead of getting shot to pieces by elite players who have over 1k hours of playtime in Alvo. The trophy list is a big disappointment to this day. Before this game was released on PSVR2 there was already enough noise on discord about the outrageous trophy requirements for the devs to take notice. Instead of changing anything about it, they ported the exact same list to PSVR2, which isn’t just bullshit in general, but particularly because their game changed a lot and added new game modes, none of which got any new trophies attached to them. The 183 hours it took me to complete this were only possible because a group of people came together for weeks to boost the most idiotic parts of the list, for mind numbing hours on end, with as much efficiency as possible. A more realistic time for solo trophy hunters is something like 250-300 hours. But seriously, don’t get this game for trophy purposes at all at this point, it’s just not worth it. Ancient Dungeon 🎮 ★★★★★ 🏆★★★☆☆ ⏱31 Roguelite dungeon crawler with Minecraft-y graphics. The dungeon you explore always follows the same order of 5 biomes, but the layout of each is randomly generated every time you enter again. There are tons and tons of relics to find within the dungeon to get a different build each time, on top of permanent progression choices after a failed or completed attempt. Enemy variety is cool and so are the boss fights at the end of each biome. The game is initially quite difficult, but with progress and experience it becomes much easier and ending up with a super strong build is satisfying and fun. Various mods enable the player to change the parameters of a new attempt to up the difficulty and keep the challenge intriguing. The presentation, game loop, mechanics, unlocks etc. are all top-notch and while we got a metric shit-ton of roguelites for PSVR2 already, this one is easily in the top 1-3 and a must have for fans of the genre. The trophy list is long and challenging and a few tasks might require dirty tricks like save-scumming to prevail, but overall I feel it’s designed in a very good and fun way. I even wanted this one to pop my psnp guide-cherry, but after having put 12+ hours into a very detailed trophy guide, littered with screenshots and videos, I ultimately decided to delete my attempt instead of going through the ridiculous process to have it approved. Still, if anyone is having issues on the trophy front, hit me up and I’ll be happy to point you in the right direction. Angry Birds VR: Isle of Pigs 🎮 ★★☆☆☆ 🏆★★★☆☆ ⏱3 If you have played Angry Birds on your phone, you know what this game is if you simply imagine it in VR. What was cool as a mobile game is still pretty fun in VR, but there isn’t enough content here to warrant more stars. This game is also a port from PSVR1, so don’t expect anything new. I imagine this to be a great showcase for when having kids over. The trophy list is alright for how quick you can complete it, but it’s missing a platinum and the level balancing is off. Most levels can be completed with three stars even if you were blindfolded, but several require both precise and hard-to-guess strategies. There are video guides on yt to help. Arashi: Castles of Sin 🎮 ★★☆☆☆ 🏆★★★★★ ⏱3 Port from a PSVR1 game that released somewhat late in the last headsets lifecycle. Set in medieval Japan you play as a samurai who is on a journey to avenge his master’s death. You consequently murder yourself through a bunch of linear levels, littered with patrolling enemies, a few collectibles and concluding in pretty cool boss fights. The design of those levels is somewhat open and offers a good variety of possible routes and strategies, with some focus on verticality. While being stealthy and killing from the shadows is generally the best approach, nothing stops you from going all out sword fighting. The arsenal is creative, and other than your trusty katana you also have bombs, poisoned rice, blow darts, a bow, shuriken and other things at your disposal. On top of that you are always accompanied by your wolf dog and can set him on tasks like digging out gold or attacking/distracting enemies. As a fan of anything Japan related, I liked this game on PSVR1 more than most, so it saddens me to have to call this port out for being pretty botched. This version looks and feels mediocre or even horrible at times and definitely falls short of what a PSVR2 game should offer. The term “cash grab” comes to mind. A trophy hunter gets a good deal here though. The list includes a platinum and can be completed at a decent pace, if you played the first version of the game and/or check out a guide for the collectibles. Bad Dreams 🎮 ★★☆☆☆ 🏆★★★★★ ⏱2 Horror game that recently released on PSVR1 first and supposedly got a few improvements for the PSVR2 version, thus the title is sometimes called “Very Bad Dreams” on PS5. At times more of a walking simulator in trippy environments, you usually have to flee from something or fight with lesser evils to progress a somewhat short sequence of levels. While there are several moments of sparkling creativity shining though, this game is still janky af and prone to crashing. The devs still seem to treat it as a work-in-progress, so fingers crossed for many more patches. On both versions I was glad when it was finally over. If you know where the collectibles are the standard 1300ish trophy points (platinum included) can be grabbed very quickly. You can find my in-depth post (for the PS4 version, but that works for PS5 too) about it here: [CLICK] Behind the Frame: The Finest Scenery VR 🎮 ★☆☆☆☆ 🏆★★★★★ ⏱1.5 Puzzle game trying to be artsy but failing utterly because of shit-tier graphics und otherworldly jank. This game is bad shovelware that is only good for trophy hunters, offering a quick platinum. Breachers 🎮 ★★★★☆ 🏆★★☆☆☆ ⏱22 Rainbow Six Siege in VR! This is a very tactical shooter that puts “revolters” (=terrorists) with the objective to defend a bomb against “enforcers” (=counter-terrorists) who try to breach the building and plant an emp device to defuse the bomb. There is one map offering FFA, too. While there is a good variety of weapons and cool gadgets that other games don’t have (drones, slowing fields, door blockers, breaching foam and many more) there unfortunately is no progression, everything is unlocked from the start like in Pavlov. The gunplay is also a tiny bit lacking, with weapons not really translating any “oomph” into the controllers and generally feeling quite interchangeable. Other than that, there is a lot of great gameplay here and the playerbase was big enough last I played, in no small part due to the crossplay and the high standing the game seems to have in the PC community. I hope that’s still the case right now, but even if you don’t find many others to play with, the lobbies get filled up with bots. They are not as fun as playing with real players, but I found them working well enough. The gunplay and variety of modes is much better in Pavlov, but if you are looking for something tactical, this is the best shooter on the market right now. The trophy list is a bit annoying and requires not only a lot of grinding but also trying to make a bunch of stuff happen that likely won’t occur in regular play. Bot lobbies and boosting with another player might be required to get this one done. Cactus Cowboy: Desert Warfare 🎮 ★★★☆☆ 🏆★★★☆☆ ⏱5 Single player FPS with a solid story that offers some comedy. Think CoD campaign mode, but in low graphics and the depicted conflict being between plants (cacti) and bugs, with deliberate, over-the-top absurdity. The campaign offers everything you expect from a game like this: tons of enemies to shoot at, boss fights, defending positions, finding and placing bombs, operating an MG during a helicopter flight, parts with other NPCs accompanying you etc. It’s quite fun and serves well to kill an afternoon. If you played the free-to-play game Plants at War, you know exactly what style of game you get. What I’m saying is, keep your expectations in check and you get a good indie product here. The trophy list is creative, yet annoying when it comes to a few obscure things to find. You will be happy to look up a guide sooner rather than later if you want to complete this game without having to replay chapters with unskippable dialogue over and over. Cactus Cowboy: Plants at War 🎮 ★★☆☆☆ 🏆★☆☆☆☆ ⏱10 Free-to-play FPS game in the exact same style of the aforementioned Desert Warfare. Being free it’s no surprise that the game is a bit less polished than the paid-for successor and players might encounter more jank. But if you are looking for a new game and don’t feel like spending any money at the moment, then checking this one out is an absolute no-brainer. Considering this appears to be a somewhat casual 1-person project (same as Desert Warfare), I would go as far as saying it's unprecedented for the VR space what we got here. The only free VR games I can remember have been experiences and certainly not full-length games. The trophy list is underwhelming though, being short, containing a very badly implemented collectible grind and lacking a platinum. I was only able to complete it because the collectibles had a bug that helped tremendously. It took me a while to figure that out though, so the playtime of 10 hours was caused by hunting medals and is not reflective of the time it takes to just complete the game, which should be closer to 4-5 hours. Cooking Simulator VR 🎮 ★★★★☆ 🏆★★★★★ ⏱1.5 Not surprisingly, this game is a cooking simulator. What indeed was surprising to me was the very high quality of this game. I’m not interested in cooking at all, neither IRL nor in a game, and my experiences with everything with “simulator” in the name didn’t exactly get my hopes up for this title. But it turned out the visuals are very sharp, it feels amazingly convincing and engaging to navigate the kitchen, the progression system seems fair and draws you in and the depth of this game is astonishing. After a well-designed (and definitely required) tutorial you can play a career-mode with gradual unlocks, that forces you to take it seriously, not only to improve your stock of ingredients, utensils and recipes, but also to buy perks and skills, all the while avoiding going bankrupt by overspending. If you want to just fool around with everything unlocked at once, you can jump into a sandbox mode. All modes also offer the option to switch from a classic kitchen to a modern version that has a very different flair. 4 stars is definitely ambitious for what this game is and I for sure aim this specifically at the enthusiastic chef-types. If you are neither that nor a trophy hunter, you are likely better off skipping this title, but everyone else will be very happy with their purchase. Here is the great treat in this for trophy hunters: The list is designed in a way that you can complete it pretty quickly without having to go through the entire career-mode. The list in a way shows you all the great features of the game on a surface level, but doesn’t force you to deep-dive if you don’t want to. I wouldn’t want this shortcut-approach in every game, but sometimes it is definitely appreciated and here it’s absolutely perfect. Crossfire: Sierra Squad 🎮 ★★★★☆ 🏆★★★★☆ ⏱14 Cooperative FPS going for realistic graphics, but arcade-y gameplay (enemies are bulletsponges). Feels like an on-rails waveshooter at times, and I would’ve preferred a slightly more open level design, but this is great quality overall. It’s what we probably expected from the PSVR1 title Bravo Team, which turned out to be very mediocre. This game is similar, but better in every aspect. Especially fun when not playing alone. Lots of unlockable weapons and missions plus good difficulty settings to offer the right challenge for everyone. The trophy list is sensible and fun, too. Few PSVR2 connoisseurs would go wrong with this game. CyubeVR 🎮 ★★★☆☆ 🏆★★★★★ ⏱8 Minecraft 1.0. You explore a procedurally generated, almost limitless world and collect blocks of various materials to build equipment and structures. A long list of tasks guides you through all the games mechanics. This is an extremely beautiful title that makes good use of the power and the features of the PSVR2, something we so far have been seeing way too little of in the current library. Regrettably, as polished as this game is, as little there is in regards to its current content. I was going to give this 4 stars at first, but after reflecting more about the problems, I found that to be misleading. The potential this game has is easily in the 4 to 5 star region, but what is currently there is just too incomplete, especially considering how long this game has already been released on other platforms. There are only two biomes, with the desert being almost barren of useful material and not being a favorable place to spend much time in. The world is generated with a weird emphasis on verticality and you constantly have to climb mountains or out of deep holes/caves you accidentally fell in, but there is no convenient way to do that, because neither teleportation nor building works well upwards. You are also encouraged to eventually build your home somewhere, but there is no convenient way to get back to it if you got lost foraging. Night cycles are beautiful but useless from a gameplay point of view. You have bow and arrow, but there are no survival mechanics and it serves absolutely no purpose to shoot at the deer and rabbits, other than to make you feel bad. And once you worked your way through the tasks of the long tutorial, it feels like there is very little complexity and very little creative depth to go big. So, the game appears barebone and incomplete. I’m sure this will be a great title for creators eventually, but it’s far from that point at the moment. The trophy list on the other hand is pretty well designed and I enjoyed my time checking each trophy off while following the tutorial tasks. D-Day Enhanced 🎮 ★★★☆☆ 🏆★★☆☆☆ ⏱9 Massive Multiplayer FPS with emphasis on fast paced action in (potentially) huge 64 person lobbies. There are a lot of parallels in gameplay between this and the Cactus Cowboy games, basically their MP version without the cacti/bug shenanigans (there is no connection, it’s just something that came to my mind a lot when playing these titles). It’s presented in a WWII theme with rather low graphical fidelity and some jank, as expected from most indie titles programmed in the shitty unity engine. Same as its PS4 predecessor “Honor and Duty: D-Day”, this is a title that unfortunately seem to lack the polish and quality to keep enough people engaged to form the playerbase that is needed to reliably sustain its premise of huge lobbies. When playing this the first few days after release I constantly heard people complaining that the controls feel bad and they wouldn’t play again, which is a shame, because after the initial troubles it definitely flows fine. If you play this at peak times with a near full lobby it is great, chaotic fun that is certainly unique. Just don’t take this game too serious, we have Breachers and Pavlov for that. The trophy list was cool before one of the early patches that apparently reduced the XP gains and slowed leveling down considerably. That and the decreasing influx of new players likely turned this quick and easy trophy list into a painful slog now, with one in particular being a platinum killer: A 20 kill streak. That is simply not feasible for this type of game if you are not way ahead of the average player. If you still want to go for it, the best bet is probably to play when the server is empty and the lobby gets filled with bots. Dead Hook 🎮 ★★★☆☆ 🏆★★★☆☆ ⏱11 Roguelite Doom clone with a grappling hook mechanic, used for traversal and to brutally finish off stunned enemies. Each run you fight through big rooms that challenge you to kill all enemies within a time limit, survive a certain amount of time, kill enemies in a specific order, kill elites and similar stuff like that. Mixed in between are boss fights and sanctuaries that offer weapons and mods to buy, changing up each attempt, as expected from a roguelite. And of course, there are permanent unlocks to buy when a death sends you back to your ship. If you like ultrafast and intense FPS gameplay, you will probably like this game for a few hours. It’s not without issues though: Graphics could be better, progression and balancing of weapons, upgrades and mods is far from optimal and there could be more depth to the environments and the gameplay loop overall, but I still enjoyed it quite a bit. This definitely made me hope we will get something like the real Doom for PSVR2 eventually, as we got for PSVR1. The trophy list has 1-3 really annoying and tricky challenges and overstays its welcome a tiny bit, it’s ultimately an alright ordeal though. You can find my in-depth post about it here: [CLICK] Drunkn Bar Fight 🎮 ★☆☆☆☆ 🏆★★★☆☆ ⏱6 Min This game was janky garbage on PS4 and proudly defends its position in the top 5 of worst games on the system even after the port to PS5. It somehow lost a trophy in the process, and gained nothing of value. There is the fun aspect of speedrunning the shitty trophy list in mere minutes though, so there is that. Epic Roller Coasters 🎮 ★☆☆☆☆ 🏆★★☆☆☆ ⏱3.5 I can still remember the first time I entered the rollercoaster in Rush of Blood on PSVR1, dipping down the first slope and knowing a new era of gaming was beginning. Since then, I frequently wonder how amazing a really well-designed rollercoaster with great graphics and compelling environments would be. This is not it. This is a boring, ugly game that shits microtransactional levels all over the store. The trophy list is short and annoyingly requires 100 race finishes that can’t be afk’d. Don’t buy this shovelware trash. Firewall Ultra 🎮 ★★☆☆☆ 🏆★☆☆☆☆ ⏱335 Competitive, realistic, tactical multiplayer FPS, pretty much Counterstrike in VR. When Firewall came to PSVR1, it made one of my most cherished VR memories. I lived in my headset for the first weeks (when it wasn’t as much of a lobby simulator and you found matches constantly) and could think of nothing but getting the next round in. I got the worlds first platinum for Zero Hour and I fully expected to be competing in Ultra with the same excitement. Unfortunately, as most VR players know by now, this game turned out to be the biggest disaster on PSVR2 to date. While looking pretty great, the game had an insane number of big issues. Gunplay was off, progression a brutal and unsatisfying slog, wallhacks and glitches that reset unlucky player’s progress, matchmaking problems, tons of afk-farmers ruining most lobbies etc. Soon after release the playerbase died down to a handful of elite players (and the afk pieces of shit) that mostly refused to play each other. It was like playing online poker where you see the sharks jumping in, check for the number of newbs and then jump out again in the hopes to find a better lobby with at least 2-3 easy players. While I indeed succeeded in getting worlds first platinum again, it was an absolutely miserable experience and the way the studio First Contact handled themselves, their priorities and the community made closing the studio down seem nothing other than a logical consequence. Galaxy Kart 🎮 ★★★☆☆ 🏆★★☆☆☆ ⏱9 Mario Kart in VR! The game was a buggy mess when it first came out, but since then managed to turn around that perception and fix a lot of the issues. I still found it pretty janky at times and have some hilarious clips of stuff that went wrong when I played, but I can overall see why it is appreciated now. You can even plug in that fancy wheel and pedals you bought for GT7 and never used since then, but a catch is that you need to put one Sense Controller within reach too, to be able to use powerups, which makes for a really weird control scheme. Unfortunately, there doesn’t seem to be much of a playerbase and I have only ever been able to play with others when making plans via PSN or discord. The trophy list lacks a platinum and has some issues, but other than one odd trophy, most pop either when they should or without even meeting the requirements. This isn’t the greatest game for trophy hunting, but considering there isn’t anything like it in our current line-up, one can’t go wrong adding it to their library. Gazzlers 🎮 ★★★★☆ 🏆★★☆☆☆ ⏱17 Roguelite, on-rails wave-shooter with comic graphics, but also clear inspirations from Mad Max. You are strapped to the back of a moving truck and have to keep away the “gazzlers”, who wildly shooting try to catch up with their spiked bikes and trucks. There is a handful of different biomes, each with several levels in between which you pick and choose temporary mods and parts for your weapon, all significantly altering the gunplay of each attempt. After a death you can buy permanent upgrades for health, damage, utility etc. The visual presentation, the gameplay, the steady progression and the rogue loop make this a very fun and addictive game, although I would’ve wished for a little bit more balancing. With some experience you soon know after the first boss if your run will be good or bad, because there are some really, really bad weapon parts and 2-3 others that are clearly OP. That entices fishing for good runs early on which I always find to be boring and suboptimal game design for roguelites. The trophy list takes a few hours longer to complete than fun persists and has a few challenges that require an annoying degree of RNG. Ghost Signal 🎮 ★★★★☆ 🏆★★★★☆ ⏱12 Yet another roguelite, but in a totally different setting than the other titles on my list. Here you direct a space ship in 3rd person and dogfight from the pov of an all-seeing commander outside the battle area. The concept works really well and the visuals of the space around you are stunning. Not only has the game a deep progression system of permanent upgrades, a growing codex of entities you encounter and an intriguing variety of events happening on every node of you run progression, you also get pieces of an overarching story with each attempt and can pick and choose from a multitude of “cheats” to change the difficulty to the level you prefer. My 12 hours are on the chicken-level, with every help possible. The standard settings are much more challenging and easily double the playtime. The trophy list is sensible with ample use of the help options and while there are a few that are tricky to figure out, most don’t pose much trouble over the course of the normal progression. At one point there is a total reset of the save file required. While the game firmly warns you about this, for some this might seem more like a meta joke and not like a serious warning. You better believe it though, if you follow through without having a save file in the cloud you might find yourself a few trophies short and the entire game to complete from scratch again. Green Hell VR 🎮 ★★★★☆ 🏆★★★☆☆ ⏱20 Story driven survival game in the jungle with deep mechanics in regards to sleep, injury, nourishment, weather etc. You have to craft items for your survival, hunt animals, build camps, treat issues like fever or poison with the correct plants and mushrooms, pick leeches from your body and much more. Other than a story mode you can also play several different challenge scenarios that require you tackling specific tasks like building a huge signal fire or hunt every type of animal within a tight timeframe. This game got some flak following the release because apparently, we got the more linear Quest version and not the open-world-ish PC version, on top of subpar graphics and a buggy trophy list. I believe the graphics got improved by now and the trophy list is definitely fixed. Thus, what we have right now is a pretty decent survival game with unique mechanics that has the potential to keep you on the edge of your gaming chair for many hours. People like to compare this to Song in the Smoke, which is fair, but they are stylistically and mechanically different enough to not necessarily go one or the other, por qué no los dos? Song in the Smoke does some things better than Green Hell and vice versa. Song in the Smoke is overall the slightly better game, but ymmv and both are really cool titles. The trophy list requires some ingenuity and tenacity, but fits the theme of survival in the jungle really well. If you prevail over the challenges, you get rewarded with a pretty rare platinum. Gun Club VR 🎮 ★★★☆☆ 🏆★★★★☆ ⏱0.5/16 Port from the PSVR1 version. This is “just” a compilation of gun ranges, but pretty much the best implementation you could come up with. The graphics are super sharp and there are tons and tons of realistic looking weapons to buy. The variety of tasks in the different gun ranges is surprisingly diverse, too. Even if you are not a total gun nut, this game is solid fun as a shooting range simulator (including a zombie mode). It’s also one of the few games that auto-pop trophies, so if you import your PS4 file in the PS5, you get most of your progress and your trophies instantly. That’s why I put up two completion times, 16 hours originally for the PS4 version and half an hour for clean-up on the PS5 version. Hellsweeper VR 🎮 ★★★☆☆ 🏆★★★☆☆ ⏱27 Another game, another roguelite. Here you jump, slide, somersault, dash, duck & dodge in various areas of hell while decimating hordes of evil in a never-ending battle, including three different bosses. On your way you slowly climb up from the rank of a mere Junior Sweeper to become a master Hellsweeper, constantly unlocking more weapons, magic and perks to round out your arsenal, which often considerably mixes up the gameplay. This game was very controversial on release for offensively bad graphics. We seem to be on the verge of a patch that is supposed to bring foveated rendering to fix those complaints. However, I played this recently before any graphical upgrades and have to say that I wasn’t bothered as much by the graphics as the general public. The gameplay is rock solid. A lot of the higher-level movement techniques have to be switched on in the menu, which seems counter-intuitive, but was apparently needed to circumvent Sony’s locomotion requirements (so new players don’t violently vomit all over their living room and having to sweep that). I don’t think the movement scheme was quite as confusing as the often named Sairento, but it’s deep enough to offer a higher than average skill ceiling and enable the player to do some really cool moves. My only complaints are aimed at the slightly too long grind and some balancing issues. For example, magic is very strong and ranged weapons are very shit. The boss fights are also a bit odd with somewhat obscure strategies required to beat them. For trophy hunters this title will require a lot more hours of dull grinding than appreciated, but otherwise it’s an ok list. Journey to Foundation 🎮 ★★★☆☆ 🏆★☆☆☆☆ ⏱8 Story driven adventure game in Isaac Asimov’s “Foundation” universe. The main gameplay consists of talking to NPCs and choosing which way you want to answer in certain situations, changing the following course of the story a bit. There is a bit of lukewarm shooting and puzzle solving, too. The graphics are about average. For fans of the universe and people that like huge amounts of text and speech in their games, there is a bit of fun to be had. Personally, as someone who recently enjoyed the TV show, I found this game rather boring. The trophy list is a torturous shitshow, no platinum plus requiring many repetitions to get the requirements for certain story outcomes right. Legendary Tales 🎮 ★★★★★ 🏆★★☆☆☆ ⏱57 Medieval fantasy rpg and a banger at that. Despite being an indie game, this is an outstanding title with no competition in its genre in the current PSVR2 library. Some people are saying this is better than Skyrim, which is absolutely delusional, but for an indie game what is here is indeed amazing. The devs also delivered multiple patches already and don’t seem to stop improving the game any time soon. Absolutely well deserved, this is one of the top selling recent games (24/03). I won’t go more into the details here because I already wrote a massive post with more than enough info about the game in general and the trophies in particular. You can find that here: [CLICK] The trophy list is a huge undertaking and a specific challenge will be a platinum breaker for many: finishing the game in perma-death mode. Even with save-scumming, this is a very difficult feat. Little Cities: Bigger! 🎮 ★★★☆☆ 🏆★★★★☆ ⏱21 Cozy city builder, offering 8 different islands to fill and a sandbox mode for your own creativity. The three types of zone buildings, residential/commercial/industrial, have to be balanced with each other and supported with electricity, water, medical care and other utilities, which requires smart usage of the available space to maximize the city’s population growth. There isn’t much complexity here, which can be either a good or a bad thing, depending on what expectations you have for a game like this. The goal seems to be more of a relaxing atmosphere in which you can’t really mess up anything and instead just build what- and however you want, at your own pace. This premise also encourages you to zoom in once in a while and just follow the hustle and bustle of the city and look out for random stuff that can happen, like dolphins following boats or hot air balloons going up and cruising the sky above the city. There is slightly too little to see and do, on top of slightly below average graphics, to give more stars here. While playing, I often remembered Townsmen VR (not the same genre, but similar top-down presentation), which looks much better and delightful. Nonetheless, this is a good purchase and a good VR showcase when having friends over. Grabbing all trophies keeps you engaged more, without being overly demanding. Operation Wolf Returns: First Mission VR 🎮 ★★☆☆☆ 🏆★★★★★ ⏱2 Solo FPS in a Vietnam war setting, simplistic but sharp graphics. This is like playing an old arcade 2D sidescroller, but in VR. If you like retro/arcade games, this is probably worth a try and trophy hunters appreciate the easy trophy shower this game is, but there isn’t much depth and/or replay value to this title otherwise. Paper Beast 🎮 ★★★☆☆ 🏆★★★★★ ⏱3 Somewhat abstract, artsy and calm adventure game with some puzzle solving, port from PSVR1. This feels a bit like Journey and the aesthetics keep reminding me of Bound, another PSVR1 classic. Unfortunately, this one suffered a bit from the ravages of time and the port isn’t delivering as strongly as the first iteration of the game did, back in 2020. Nonetheless, if you have never played this, it’s a few good hours of dreamy, tranquil entertainment and a quick platinum for trophy hunters. Peaky Blinders: The King's Ransom 🎮 ★★★☆☆ 🏆★★★☆☆ ⏱7 Linear gangster story game with lots of collectibles, some puzzles and some shooting, taking place in the 1920s Birmingham setting from the TV show. As someone who enjoyed said show, I was at the same time surprised about this IP making it to VR as I was pleased with the fan service. Because that what it is: a mediocre, but alright game with some jank but lots of Peaky fooking Blinders atmosphere. If you never watched the show, not knowing the characters and events, you will likely be underwhelmed with this game, because there are several bugs and issues and nothing much to keep your attention. Absolutely deduct 1 star in that case. Specifically in regards to the mixed bag the trophy experience is, I made a post in the forum, accessible here: [CLICK] Propagation: Paradise Hotel 🎮 ★★★★☆ 🏆★☆☆☆☆ ⏱5 The zombie apocalypse happened and you find yourself as one of the last remnants of humanity trapped inside a hotel kitchen, hoping to find your sister, who is holding out on the roof. Equipped with a pistol and later on a shotgun against the constant thread of zombie attacks, you explore the hotel floor by floor and try to open paths that will bring you back together with your sister. This indie game nails the atmosphere and manages to achieve solid gameplay with little investment. The graphical assets and enemy types are not that diverse, the story is nothing groundbreaking and the one boss fight at the end is more irritating than fun, but despite all that this is a really cool game. 4 stars is still a bit ambitious and it’s rather on the lower end of this rating, but horror fans and everyone who likes Saints & Sinners shouldn’t pass up this title. There is only a very sorry excuse for a trophy list though, no platinum and annoying tasks like collectible hunts, a speedrun and a run on nightmare difficulty. Red Matter 🎮 ★★★★★ 🏆★★★★★ ⏱1 A PSVR1 classic, “alone-in-a-spacestation-sci-fi-horror” setting. Some of the best graphics we have on PSVR2, perfect atmosphere, creative mysteries to solve, absolute must-have for VR enthusiasts (as well as the 2nd title of the series, btw.). The 1 hour time I’m putting up is the speedrun. As a first timer you will very likely get 4-6 hours out of this. Trophy hunters can’t skip this game either, with the 1300ish points including a platinum being so fast and enjoyable to grab. Resident Evil 4 🎮 ★★★★★ 🏆★★★☆☆ ⏱67 Action-Horror shooter in the Resident Evil universe with all the expected qualities and polish of a AAA game. This is a hybrid (meaning it can be played fully flat or in VR with exception of the DLC, which is only flat) and as such doesn’t count for the VR leaderboard, but it’s at the same time the absolute best game we have on PSVR2, by a silly margin. This game basically lets you glimpse at what VR gaming could be if it wasn’t the tiny niche it is. There could be some more VR af mechanics if you want to whine at a high level, but there is nothing else on PSVR2 that offers this deep of a story and this much game. RE Village comes close of course, but I basically count these together for both being the same triple A, Sony financed projects from the same series and studio. This time, other than in RE8, you can even get all the trophies of the base game in VR. While that demands a high level of dedication to finish the beefy list, you have no idea what insane mindfuck VR can be until you experience this game. Everyone should definitely play this asap. RuinsMagus 🎮 ★★★☆☆ 🏆★★★☆☆ ⏱5 Anime themed dungeon crawler that I felt was advertised as being much more sophisticated than it turned out to be. I somehow expected a deep rpg, but that is not what this is. The only reason this got 3 stars is the lively and graphically pleasing hub area and knowing that some anime fans will really dig the visual presentation. Other than that, all you do in this game is reading too much text the NPCs throw at you, click on your next quest and then fight through a linear, extremely boring dungeon. The trophies are mostly no issue, S ranks requirements are stupid easy to get and the only thing stopping you from completing this list will likely be boredom. System Critical 2 🎮 ★☆☆☆☆ 🏆★★★★★ ⏱3 Advertised as “Mega Man VR” this linear FPS turns out to be hilariously bad shovelware trash. The only Mega Man-ish thing about it is that you can equip a weapon that looks like a blaster and the levels you can enter are presented in the 3x3 tile fashion known from the beloved Mega Man series. Otherwise, this has no resemblance. It’s like someone half-assedly fumbled around a basic level creation tool, put an enemy here and there, pressed ctrl+v a few times, changed the color palette and then said to themselves “Well, a few idiots will definitely pay us 30 bucks for stroke of genius”. Yeah, I did. I appreciate the trophy shower, but this game is sooo bad. Suicide Guy VR Deluxe 🎮 ★☆☆☆☆ 🏆★★★★★ ⏱4 You navigate a chonky guy through levels that require you to find a creative way to kill himself to get to the next. Port from the PSVR1 version. It felt like a janky tech demo with a debatable premise on PS4 and nothing has changed. It’s still janky, buggy trash, prone to brutal frame drops, glitches, crashes and freezes. The trophy list is easy, especially with the guides already out since the PS4 version, but in case the list doesn’t sync with your PSN, try to start the game while having a regular Dual Sense controller connected. Wild bug, but the fix worked for me. Super Death Game Show! VR 🎮 ★★☆☆☆ 🏆★★★☆☆ ⏱4 You are the participant in a game show that promises you big riches if you win, but will cost you your life if you lose. During your attempts you unlock more and more cubes with lots of different “games”, that you can pick and choose on subsequent runs, if you beat them once without dying. Most games have multiple tiers of difficulty to unlock, that up the risk but also the reward. The games themselves are a mixture of physical skill and puzzle solving, like goal keeping, counting female chicks by well-hidden characteristics, solving a riddle, stacking blocks, minigolf, stuff like that. Some are pretty cool, others are more on the dull side, especially after having found out the solutions once. For a few hours of fun this game was surprisingly engaging, but there isn’t much longevity here and if you go in with the purpose of completing the mediocre trophy list, you’ll be glad that it’s not overstaying its welcome. Survivorman VR: The Descent 🎮 ★★☆☆☆ 🏆★★★★★ ⏱2 The premise of this title is that you fly in a helicopter over a snowy mountainside and then crash during a blizzard. The game then guides you from task to task (like making a fire or crafting snowboots) to escape your predicament, while teaching you survival techniques. I found it tough to judge if this is meant as a realistic and educational VR experience, because the presentation was only so-so, but for its short duration it was an ok trip. I doubt I’ll put anything from this game to good use should I ever crash in the Alps, but who knows. It’s certainly a good purchase for trophy hunters, the platinum being quick and easy. The 7th Guest VR 🎮 ★★★★★ 🏆★★★☆☆ ⏱8 This is a murder mystery puzzle game, set in one big, old-school mansion. You unlock room after room and piece together more and more parts of the story, presented via cool cut-scene like visions of the events that took place with the guests. It’s similar to The Room VR, as in invoking the feeling of being in a sophisticated, multi-layered escape room. The graphics are great and the puzzles very intriguing. Where The Room VR didn’t quite hold up as well after its port, this game easily positions itself as the top puzzler of the system, currently, and I enjoyed my time with it greatly. I can see this game being a great addition to an evening with friends, to experience an escape room together without leaving the house (and paying hundreds of moniez for an IRL escape room). The trophy list requires tenacity though and the way collectibles are handled is slightly annoying, which luckily doesn’t put much of a damper on the overall experience. The Room VR: A Dark Matter 🎮 ★★★★☆ 🏆★☆☆☆☆ ⏱2 As stated in the review above, this is a superb classic from the PSVR1, a really cool escape room set in Egypt. The puzzles are creative and the rooms beautifully crafted. The port didn’t quite get the lift-up required to rival the graphics of other PSVR2 games and especially the genre contender The 7th Guest blows this out of the water, but it’s still a great title for an afternoon of solo puzzling or as a group activity for showing off VR. The few listless trophies for completing each chapter are probably just there because Sony requires it, which is a pity. The Tale of Onogoro 🎮 ★★★☆☆ 🏆★★★☆☆ ⏱9 Anime themed first person puzzle game, based loosely on medieval Japan with lots of fantasy elements. The catch is that you constantly have to move a girl around that is tied to a stone, both to activate plates and doors as well as moving her out of harms way when enemies start attacking. Every area of the levels requires moving the right blocks, shooting the right things and keeping the right order of actions to ultimately be able to progress through the next doorway. The concept is unique and I found it pretty cool at times, especially with the graphics being quite beautiful, despite the game being a PSVR1 port. There are also a few boss fights that are very well done. You must have a strong taste for these kinds of Japanese games though to suffer through the lengthy dialogues and sometimes borderline torturous repetitions required to figure out the correct way to solve an area. If you have the tenacity (and maybe a guide open on a 2nd screen), you get lots of trophies, including a platinum. The Wizards: Dark Times 🎮 ★★☆☆☆ 🏆★☆☆☆☆ ⏱80 You’re a Wizard, Harry! In this fantasy adventure with a short solo campaign (3-4 hours) and a long multiplayer arena mode you perform gestures with the controllers to conjure spells and kill enemy creatures. That’s the idea anyways, but reality quickly slaps you in the face with this one. First the positive points: The game has a cool narrating voice and very beautiful environments. Other than that, it’s unfortunately a massive disaster that I regret ever having started. There are PSVR1 games which would easily put this one to shame, graphically. In fact, I don’t recall owning a PSVR2 game that is as blurry as this pos. And even after having put 80 hours into this mess, I never had to fight anything as hard as the controls, because the gestures simply don’t work anywhere near reliably enough to be enjoyable. You want to block with your shield? Nah bro, I’d rather pull out this little fireball instead and hold it in my hand like a juggling, useless clown while eating shit from the enemy archers, try again. You want to pull out the bow to conjure an AOE effect that would kill 8 enemies at once? Nah bro, this time I pull out a shield on each hand like an idiot version of Captain America and wait until the enemies are spread out and fuck me up, huehue. On top of that, there are multiple other design choices, bugs and glitches that make this game flow like shit, like every single thing slowing your movement speed down and making dodging impossible, internal cooldowns on spells making no sense, enemy archers predicting your movement and never missing, health pickups not working, level progression being blocked because somewhere an enemy got stuck inside a wall, XP not being shared and thus rendering group play useless (the multiplayer is DOA anyways) etc. The biggest fun I had was when I found out that entering the single player mode resets the MP progression on that save file for good. Luckily, I found that out with almost all MP classes maxed out, so I only lost 35+ hours of progression, instead of noticing it early on, haha, that would’ve been too easy, haha. Haha. All kidding aside, even if the graphics weren’t so utterly shit and the game didn’t have any bugs, it’d still be a 40 hour multiplayer mode that is fun for only 2 of those hours. The devs put up a roadmap on discord and reddit with ambitious goals, though. If you want to get this title, I would urgently suggest waiting for a few more patches, like 57 or so. Toy Trains 🎮 ★★★☆☆ 🏆★★★★★ ⏱2 A cozy and calm building game in which you place train tracks to connect buildings with resources and each other, each level slightly ramping up the complexity of challenges, unlocking more and more elements for the tracks you build, like bridges, tunnels, verts, turns etc. This is a pretty game that doesn’t want to do much more than scratch a few itches of your inner child (children over 18 unequivocally included, no judgement), but this it does in convincing fashion. Even trophy hunters are inclined to let our that inner child here, as the list is long, easy and rewarding. Twilight Zone VR 🎮 ★★☆☆☆ 🏆★★★★☆ ⏱3 I don’t know how to classify this game, there is some puzzling, some shooting and some walking around, so I guess I call it a fan service for the enjoyers of the TV show. Unfortunately, I myself never watched this show, so I was not in a position to enjoy any easter eggs or hat-tipping. What I instead felt was immense boredom and annoyance at the jank and the trophy hunt. This game is neither visually nor mechanically a particular delight and the only reason I give it 2 stars at all is because of some unique concepts and because I expect most people being a bit more into it than I was. It could be called a trophy shower if not for a few elusive collectible items. If at any time there is a guide available, that would become a non-factor and you could add the 5th star in the trophy department. Ven VR Adventure 🎮 ★★★☆☆ 🏆★☆☆☆☆ ⏱8 A simple platformer like Lucky’s Tale or Astro Bot, but in meh. The graphics and controls are alright, the difficulty is rather high with a lot of perfect jumping required and the level design is mediocre. Nothing about this game was particularly convincing, but nothing stood out as outright bad either. The worst part about this was probably that I felt it was hyped up quite a bit prior to release and then couldn’t really deliver anything you’d write home about. The short trophy list forces some replay value onto the ordeal, but is in itself very one-dimensional, lacking a platinum and any kind of miscellaneous and/or attractive challenges. Vertigo 2 🎮 ★★★★★ 🏆★★★☆☆ ⏱14 Single player FPS with uniquely diverse and creative levels, amazing world and story building, beautiful environmental and enemy design, lots of interesting weapons, upgrades and challenges to ensure some replay value on top of the already substantial campaign. This is the gold standard for solo FPS games and indie games in general. While it had a lot of bugs and even game breaking glitches on earlier patches, most of those seem to have been fixed. It’s not perfect, but I thoroughly enjoyed my time with this shooter, that is surely the current king of the genre. The well-organized trophy hunter can shave off a lot of excessive playtime by carefully preparing with guides and strategies, otherwise there will be several surprises in the trophy list that’d require lengthy detours until the platinum finally pops. Especially irritating might be the fact that some trophies require a fresh save (at the time of posting this), but there is no way in the game to get to a fresh start without deleting the save file from the console. That will likely be patched at a later point though. VR Pigeons 🎮 ★☆☆☆☆ 🏆★★★☆☆ ⏱15 Min A goofy FPS (= first pigeon slasher) in which you run around rooftops and pick bread, avoiding other pigeons and bombs and stuff. Pick enough bread in an attempt and you unlock another level. The game was on PSVR1 and didn’t magically become non-shovelware with the port, but a shameless trophy hunter might quickly jump in the garbage pile and grab the 300 trophy points. VR Skater 🎮 ★★★★☆ 🏆★★★☆☆ ⏱16 Tony Hawks Pro Toppling VR! In this physically straining and extremely hard game you do what the title says, you skate. Oh boy, do you skate. In several varying levels, ranging from the urban streets to subways and construction sites, you try and go for the best tricks, the longest flawless run and the highest scores in a series of different modes. It’s really amazing what the studio was able to achieve with this title, as this feels almost as hard, punishing and exciting as the real deal. Sharp graphics and the challenging and realistic gameplay make for an excellent skating simulator that is absolutely unique in the VR landscape, a must-have for anyone skating IRL. Ultimately, I decided to deduct a star though, because the game is over-the-top difficult to get into and as such not a good choice for everybody. The trophy list consequently requires to get very good. Once you do though, conquering its challenges feels very rewarding. Waltz of the Wizard 🎮 ★★☆☆☆ 🏆★★★★★ ⏱1.5 Another port of a PSVR1 game with some improvements. I’d call this a playground for wizards, a magical sandbox if you will, in which you can mess around freely with all sorts of items. There are minigames to play, potions to mix, voice commands to test out, riddles to follow, more toys to find. Everything with relatively little handholding, so getting lost and not knowing how to progress is to be expected. I found a code somewhere online that can be typed into the menu and which unlocks all stuff and half the trophy list with it, otherwise I might’ve lost patience with this game. As a tech demo to fool around for a few hours it works well enough, but it’s an odd kind of game overall. Trophy hunters want this for some easy points though, likely with the help of a guide.

GothGirlMaxine
Thanks for this! I played Toy Trains VR back in December last year and I personally enjoyed it, I am glad to see it sounds like you did too. I had been looking at Behind The Frame as I enjoyed the original non-VR version but I might hold off until a sale or not bother. Also slight humble brag that I am still fastest 100% achiever on the PSVR1 version of Drunkn Bar Fight lol, as well as the PSVR2 version of VR Pigeons but on an alt account.

Same here, truly. We are still lacking in a few genres here and there, but we are getting there. And holy shit man do you have a good completion rate. You literally can't be doing trophy hunting on PSVR2 with that rate, there are just too many buggy titles. Kudos! No better FPS on the market right now, great value and challenging but very fair platinum.

They're at the top of my most anticipated list! Thank you and hopefully you are happy with your game choices later! I'm very positive that the two upcoming games you mentioned will be way above average quality. The first Wanderer was slightly overhyped in my opinion and had some jank, but was still phenomenal. The next one will likely be much better and easily a Top10 title. Metro is of course a cherished flat game from a big studio, so it appears like all the ingredients for a successful VR game are here. They killed off a small indie dev on PC who designed his game too close to their IP, so they might be getting a bit of backlash for that and maybe some people will point out things the indie dev did better, but I expect that will just stirr the pot a bit and the game will still be cool. If we are getting very close to release and no review copies go out for the content creators, I'd be inclined to instead bet on another Firewall Ultra though. The two biggest indications for botched games have always been 1) only CGI trailers and no gameplay even close to release and b) review embargos until after release and/or no review copies for content creators until super late. Fingers crossed!

But I am too getting a little sceptical about upcoming reviews should the release be soon - I've deliberately not played any of the Metro series in anticipation for the VR title, seeing as it's set before the events of 2033. And it's not just VR games that are smothered with it either. I mean, jesus christ, they even went and turned God of War's free DLC in to that rogue nonsense! If a game's not "roguelike" it's that other shit stain subgenre, "Soulslike". On a separate note, I've always wondered... where on earth do you get the time and money to do all this??? I don't mind a rougelite if it's well done and we get a lot of games anyways, it's not like there is no other genre to play. Btw., I just played the God of War DLC and it was amazing. I wish we had a game of that caliber in VR. On the separate note: I have an overpaying 9-5 and no other hobbies/social life = lots of time and money for gaming.
