...Eh....

Recommended Posts

Let me just get this out of the way here. I am a super mgs fan. I've played all of 'em, and enjoyed them all with the exception of 4. But, I'm kinda mixed on MGS5. The game-play is as great as ever, the graphics are stunning, the characters are extremely likeable, and most of the voice actors knock it out of the ball park. But.. I can't help but feel underwhelmed so far. I play MGS for the characters and story, The story is spread out across 40 missions, which means escort mission, infiltration, elimination, back to Mother Base, cut-scene, repeat. While Afghanistan is huge, everything looks the same.  Big Boss, barely talks. I have about 17 hours in, and I think I've heard the guy say a grand total of 12 full sentences. Why hire Kiefer Sutherland if he barely talks? Again, I'm only on chapter 10. So, can anyone without spoiling tell me if it gets better? I really, really, want to enjoy it...which I am, mind you. Only, this is the first time I've felt a hint of..regret.

I'm only about 5 missions past you and I know exactly what you mean. He talks more in the tapes though, so I suggest you listen to those while you're doing Side Ops or exploring. Some of the tapes will be redundant since you've played the other games, but some offer the exposition previously provided by codec conversations. Even with those though, literally 90% of my Big Boss's dialogue has been: "Hands Up," "Freeze," "Talk, "and "Where are your friends?"

It also seems like half of the cutscenes I've encountered besides (mission and Intel downloads) have been optional i.e. you could easily skip over them if you didn't check in at Mother Base, explore, or do Side Ops.

Honestly, the freedom of stealth has trumped story presentation for me though. This is probably the most fun I've ever had, and although it may not feel like a Metal Gear Solid game, it's one heck of a masterpiece.

I never felt this way. Maybe you could try listening to some of the music they have in the game while you're doing missions to break some of the monotony, or try a different approach. You can play this game in a hundred different ways.

I don't know what other advice i could give you.

They confirmed long before this game released that Big Boss was barely going to talk at all. But that being said, my only complaint is that the story is not very tightly presented like other MGS games, at least from the point I'm at.

That being said the game is still amazing in the gameplay department and the stealth is the best I've played in ANY video game to date. I think it deserves all the perfect scores it's been getting.

Does it feel like a MGS game? No not really, but what it does do is still pretty fantastic.

Those were my thoughts exactly. And that bummed me out because Kiefer Sutherland was a pretty good fit imo. They should've just named him "silent snake". My friend tried explaining it to me like this, you're not playing as Big Boss, you are Big Boss. And while I can kind of understand that, why go through the trouble of changing the VA if it was all about immersion? Other than that though, when it comes to gameplay I'm loving this game. It's like peacewalker on steroids.

There are some things that bother me yes... It's true that Big Boss doesnt talk much. I dont know if I'd like him to because I still havent accepted Keifer Sutherland as Snake. For me the worst part is probably the fact that the facecapture actually makes Snake look slighly like him which I cant stand haha. Without spoiling anything the game can get a little underwhelming towards the end because of those [EXTREME] and [TOTAL STEALTH] missions. That kind of stuff really slows the ending down... when there really isnt much "new" gameplay to experience after the 30th chapter.

I feel like Kojima and co. realized the gameplay mechanics coupled with the need for stealth and strategy to succeed was hella fun, so they just went and made a game with a gazillion missions, asking you to do the same thing. I mean its fun, I'm loving it, but I don't really like how Big Boss doesn't talk much, the story is less extensive and basically any exposition is done through listening to cassette tapes under your own discretion. Meh tho, love the game and cant wait for MGO.

I can see where you are coming from, but personally, the change in the pacing was a welcome one for me. Make sure to listen to tapes whenever you are doing side ops to fill in on story information, it's pretty much essential.

*As soon as you get to the good bit of the tape*

"BOSS GET DOWN. The enemy sniper..." "THATS AN ENEMY GUNSHIP" "You're gonna extract him??" "One burst can cut a man in two" "You've destroyed an anti air radar? It wasn't one of the objectives..."

Probably the worst design decision in the entire game, i still don't understand how they could overlook something like that. Hopefully future patches will fix this in some way or another.
