My spending is going to follow a similar trend of the past few years; focus more on my backlog, get only games I really intend to play right away/soon or missing DLCs. January nothing, sold PS4 at the end of 2020 and didn't have PS5 yet February Assassin's Creed: Valhalla (PS5) - 45 € (last time I bought a full-priced game was Destiny 2, figured I can make an exception to celebrate PS5; already 100 % base game, will wait for a heavy sale on the DLC/Season Pass) Tekken 7 (PS4) - 4.99 € (haven't played since PSX Tekken 3, already 100%) March Overcooked 2 - Gourmet Edition - 19.99 € (split buy with my gf, already 100%) April, May, June - July Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus - Deluxe Edition - 11.99 € (already started) August Middle-Earth: Shadow of War - Season Pass - 8.20 € September, October - November XCOM 2 - War of the Chosen DLC - 3.99 € Total 94.16 € Here's a brief recap of the past years: 2017 - 551 € 2018 - 80 € 2019 - 40 € 2020 - 77 € I'm very happy with my spending this year. There's a pretty good chance I will be able to keep it under 100 € and that was my goal for 2021. I still have 50+ games in my backlogs that I have never played and my plan is to focus more on these games. This year I spent almost $400 more, ending 2021 with a Grand Total of roughly $2,422. (That's just PS related purchases mind you, this isn't even including Switch/Steam purchases) With that being said, 2022 will be a year of backlog cleaning for me, I'm gonna try my damnedest to ONLY buy the big Sony AAA releases on PS5 (maybe some indies here and there) and cut back significantly (Keeping it under $1000 is what I'm thinking) on buying shit off the many sales that happen yearly. At the start of 2021 GameStop implemented a online queue system on their website to sell the few PS5/Series X they had. They would have a few consoles up for grabs once or twice a week; after a couple of weeks of fruitless attempts there was a breakthrough but all there was left for me was either a 740€ Bundle with Marvel's Avengers of all things or a plain Digital Edition PS5. i didn't want either, the first one because I had no intention of ever playing the Avenger's game and the second because I have lots of games in physical editions; so I dawdled and took some time to think, uncertain on what I should do. Eventually, after some long long minutes the site reset to normal because some more decisive people had taken initiative and had emptied the stock. A month went by before I had my second chance, that day I entered the queue seconds after the opening - I had figured the pattern at that point; announcement the day before and queue opening approximately 15 minutes before the website going live - but it still took 2 hours for my turn to come by, a testament to how many people were (and still are) interested in the console, and again the only thing that was left was a 740€ bundle. I bought it, after getting burned the first time I refused to let a second opportunity go to waste. The price didn't really bother me since my Mother and Brother had promised that they'd pitch in 200€ each as a late birthday present (of course they ended up pulling out last minute like they always do but oh well...). In my bundle I got: a WoW Funko, the console (obviously), Spider-Man Miles Morales, Call of Duty (WWII was it? I never opened it) and a second PS5 Dualsense. I have mixed feelings about this year. Sure, I'm happy about having been able to somewhow get my hands on a PS5 and I'm not too sad about my overall spending since most of it was on 'gaming capital assets'. What irritates me is that I already had a massive backlog at the start of 2021 yet I still bought lots of games that I ended up not playing and simply slotting somewhere in my backlog. I hate how easily i give in to discounts; even now, with Christmas and January sales I'm having a hard time keeping my walley shut despite knowing full well that Uni exams are coming up and that I'll probably get Horizon: Forbidden West and Dying Light: Stay Human during release week if they turn out well. It's not about money, I'm lucky to be able to buy new games when they come out but I prefer to invest all disposable income and save for early retirement. I have realised it's silly to spend money on games I don't intend to play right away. Even if I get the game for 20 €, by the time I end up playing it it's either for free on Plus/Now or drops even lower. My backlog of games I bought in the past or got from Plus (games I intend to play) is close to 100. This is a ridiculous amount of games to play and there's simply no reasonable justification to spend more money on games to add to the existing backlog. The only reason I, and I assume many of us, buy more games is the novelty. It's not about getting better games, it's about getting something "new". The games go on sale so often and so quickly after release, there's simply no reason to feel the need to buy them right away. We are long past the time waiting for Christmas/Black Friday sale as those were the only sales. We have sales now so often it doesn't feel special anymore, so often I don't even feel like checking what's offered.
