Last week we announced the release date for PS4’s first socially connected racing game – DRIVECLUB.

The response we’ve seen to the trailer is seriously overwhelming, and it’s time for some more news.

Welcome to the first of three DRIVECLUB updates this week. DRIVECLUB PlayStation Plus Edition has been a hot topic since its announce, so today’s video (the first of three) should answer most of your questions about the actual content included in this edition compared to the Blu-ray version.

One of the recurring questions we keep seeing is about the scale of the PlayStation Plus Edition. The simple answer is that with an active PlayStation Plus subscription, you can download DRIVECLUB PlayStation Plus Edition, which comes with one location (India), 11 tracks, 10 cars and access to all game modes.

But why did we choose to offer this particular selection of the game to PlayStation Plus subscribers for free?

DRIVECLUB is inherently next gen. It’s about accessibility for all and building a community of gamers who love online play. DRIVECLUB PlayStation Plus Edition is designed to be a quick and easy way for gamers all over the world to join the DRIVECLUB community. You can take part in all the game modes, set, send and compete in challenges, and race online against others in the DRIVECLUB community.

We think you’ll have a lot of fun playing DRIVECLUB once it launches on October 7th, digitally via the PlayStation store and on Blu-ray at your local retailer. If you’re an active PlayStation Plus subscriber and have been playing the PlayStation Plus Edition, but decide you want the full DRIVECLUB experience, you can purchase a one-time upgrade for $49.99. This will give you access to all five locations, 55 tracks, 50 cars and all 50 tour events, as long as your PlayStation Plus subscription remains active.

If you’re not an active PlayStation Plus member, you can still get DRIVECLUB via the PlayStation Store or your local retailer on Blu-ray.

Stay tuned because there’s more content coming tomorrow with the ‘Clubs’ video, explaining why they’re crucial to making DRIVECLUB distinctly different.

Friday’s episode is all about challenges – why we love ‘em, what they give you and importantly, how they’ll make the game infinitely more networked and fun to play in your Club.

Over and out.

Hmm, not too bad. I don't mind the idea actually; I'll more than likely at least get the PS+ version... I doubt I will buy the full version though.

One can't really expect them to give a full AAA game for free at launch; they've never done in the past. Not to say that wouldn't be nice :P

October 7 isn't exactly launch. This game was supposed to come out at launch and now they want $50 to upgrade. Hardly a free game.

Just to clarify mate, I meant launch of the game itself (not the PS4 console). Namely, they have never given a free full AAA game for free on PS+ as soon as the game comes out (they have for Indies though obviously).

I do agree with what you're saying though; they had originally said we would get the entire game for free at PS4 launch (and obviously that's not the case now...).

I also just read that if you do use your PS+ edition, and pay the $50 upgrade through this version, you only get access to the full game until your PS+ membership ends... seems a bit sneaky to me (not an issue for us who always have a membership, but for the unsuspecting member of the public, this might be a bit confusion).

Actually they never said it would be the full game. It was just the PS+ edition, but not much more detail than that

I knew there would be some kind of catch for the game being free...

So your saying Sony should give away one of their Triple-A, system seller, exclusives for free on the it's launch date? Wow

People thought with PS+ they were getting it all free?

What utter bullshit.

Hope this "pay for PS+ and get free demos!" scheme doesn't stick and this is a one-off.

Seriously, they give us a selection of free games every month anyway, is that not enough for you.

I'm worried that other developers will catch on to this bullshit money-making scheme and do the same thing until, months down the line, we no longer get free games and instead get free demos.

i.e Skylanders and then we got Disney Infinity.

This is a cheap and slutty way to get people to buy your game.

They did say at the time Driveclub was announced that it the Plus Edition was a cut down version - that you would not have access to all the cars, but I do quite clearly recall one of the developers stating in an interview that you could still Platinum the game from the Plus edition.

Now, its doubtful if that is still the case as usually racer games have trophies for racing at all locations / all regions etc.

The really shitty bit in the text above is that even if you upgrade its still only yours whilst you are a subscriber. Anything you ever bought even if it was plus discounted previously was yours no matter if you weren't a member any more.

But the other aspect of that is that this is a social game and if you not going online with your PS4 any more, you obviously wont be needing the game.

This one needs more info to make a real decision.
