Best games for PSP

Hah, what? Good games are eternal. Their "goodness" does not have an expiration date. More over, the first SMT games still hold up great. They will kick your arse and tear your soul to pieces, but... still great. The Megami Tensei 1&2 are the only games that do show their age, but their spritework and music are still great... and there is also a remake, Kyuuyaku, that raises them up to the level of SMT I, II and if... , so the early SMT can be easily experienced in all of its glory without the need to cringe.

Well, the modern Persona is a different beast altogether. Classic and Modern Personas aren't exactly comparable anymore.

And hey, they aren't that aged. Innocent Sin and Eternal Punishment, at least. First Persona is rough around the edges, I won't argue with that... but my only real complaint towards it is the fact that it dared to give me the bad ending, after I've wasted hours and hours in the casino gambling for the OP equipment... My fault though, played blind, should've used a walkthrough... *facedesk*

No, good games aren't eternal... Look, there have been a lot of great games that were considered true classics back in the day (and in a way, they still are) but that doesn't mean they are still as playable as they were. E.g. GoldenEye for the N64 was one of the best games of its generation and one of the more groundbreaking FPS games. But try playing it now and you'll have trouble sitting through 30 minutes of it. There are just far better alternatives out there, but the nostalgia makes up for some of it. But sadly, that nostalgia can also block people from seeing flaws in a game.

I agree that they aren't exactly comparable because they do play different and have very different visuals. The first Persona games had a very dark and gloomy atmosphere and visual style, the modern Persona games have a much more vibrant & cartoony vibe to them. I feel like Persona 5 is mixing the first gen with the second gen, based on the footage so far. But still, qualitywise, P3 and P4 are above and beyond.

My main gripe with the modern Persona is the inclusion of the dating-sim elements and the heavier focus on the "social elements" (school, friends, the Link system). I've tried to get into both 3 & 4 multiple times, but the "magic of friendship" is so potent there, it hurts. Also, the music... not a fan of any kind of rap, even the itsy bits of it in the music track irk me.

"Vibrant and cartoony" aesthetic of the modern Persona makes me very irritated, because this turns them into the SMT-imposters, not worthy to carry the name of the series anymore. I can see great JRPGs there, under the layers of the vibrant blue-and-yellow paint, but the fumes from this paint are so toxic to me, I end up running away to breathe each time. To this day I still haven't beaten them...

Persona 5 gives me hope, and I keep my fingers crossed for the possibility that it will carry more of the Innocent Sin's spirit and less of the Golden's. Useless and stupid, yes, but I do want to return into the sub-series despite my nitpicks towards the modern installments...

Ohh, so dont know if i do this too. I.m asking because its nice to play some ps1 classics, and psp doesn`t support trophies, and its really hard fing games to buy for psp near the place i live.

And other question: is possible login in psn in psp, for example, play online and see my friends, etc etc ??

Anyway, thank you for all games posted here! :)

First things first, you need a PSP that supports online if you want to log in.

That means 3000 and lower versions. 1004 is offline-only. And even if you do log in, I'm pretty sure store is shut down so you would have to buy the content through PC store, download on PS3 and copy it to PSP.

But frankly, forget about that, forget about buying games, CFW your PSP and play whatever you want whenever you want :)

That's what makes PSP so awesome :)

The first Persona games had a very dark and gloomy atmosphere and visual style,

And that's what made them so great. They were still SMT.

And that's why P3 is superior to P4. P3 stayed true to its roots. P4 screwed everything and re-started.

Sure, according to 'modern' trends, it can be considered more opening for newcomers but it's no longer original Persona...

Still, we are talking about PSP games, so P4 is irrelevant anyway xD

Well, your issues with the new games are understandable but that modern approach is what makes it so great. And it's the reason why critics and fans alike were and still are raving about it. You could call it a JRPG dating-sim because at its core, that's what it is but there is so much more to see and appreciate. It's like calling LittleBigPlanet a game where you're a stuffed animal running through levels. There's more to it.

On-topic: OP, if you like racing games, I had a lot of fun with Motorstorm: Arctic Edge too.

The main issue isn't the mechanics or structure of the games... It's a betrayal of the legacy, and the forebringer of destruction of the series. SMT by its nature isn't mainstream, isn't friendly. Persona opened the floodgates, brought the screaming masses of the new fans with it, and the poison of "modern approach" with it, eventually condemning the true, dark, cruel, locked into the eternal fight between the Law and Chaos soul of the franchise into the refuge of obscurity, remaking all that was left in its colorful schoolkid visage. This is... an ultimate crime for the old fans, so few and dying they may be...

You must keep in mind that the Persona series is nothing but a spin-off off SMT. I think you're being far too harsh on the modern games. I can write an essay on the why and what, but I guess we'll have to agree to disagree.  ;)

Valkyrie Profile Lenneth

Ys: the Oath in Felghana

FF7: Crisis Core

I also loved Wild ARMs XF (almost more than the two above...well at least FFCC) but it's really a game for people which are good at tacticals, be prepared.

I fuckin love the PSP, I mean even more than I like the Vita today. I played the hell out of it :D
