Nintendo has published its most recent shareholder Q&A, during which participants had the chance to quiz president Satoru Iwata on all aspects of the business.

During a question relating to Nintendo’s challenge in growing its business and continuing to deliver innovative games, Shigeru Miyamoto was brought in and discussed the struggles of making high-definition games.

“When it comes to the scale of software development,” he said, “Wii U with HD graphics requires about twice the human resources than before. Please allow me to explain that we may have underestimated the scale of this change and as a result, the overall software development took more time than originally anticipated just as we tried to polish the software at the completion phase of development. However, we are almost out of this phase, and we are also trying to create something unique utilizing an easier development approach called “Nintendo Web Framework.””

Miyamoto also addressed concern and criticism that the company’s E3 showing this year lacked original IP, stating: “When some young in-house developers come up with an idea of a new franchise, I say that creating a new character does not necessarily mean creating a new franchise. In my view, a new way of playing or new use of media is necessary for a “new product” and creating a character is not the first thing to do. In this sense, “nintendogs,” “Brain Age” and “Wii Fit” are all new franchises. Few people see it this way because these games have no symbolic “character” like the existence of Mario, but they are actually contributing to our sales.”

Elsewhere in the talk, the full transcript of which can be read here, Iwata maintained that Pikmin 3 is of quality “only Wii U can achieve” and explained the hiatus regarding the Wii’s Vitality Sensor.

“The Wii Vitality Sensor is an interesting device,” he said. “And we did various experiments to see what is possible when it was combined with a video game. But, as a result, we have not been able to launch it as a commercial product because we could not get it to work as we expected and it was of narrower application than we had originally thought.”

In any case, its launch has been pending because we decided that the Wii Vitality Sensor’s current result is insufficient as a commercial product.

He even addressed concerns regarding… the cafeteria.

Well, they will always have their target-audience so I´m not seeing that happen anytime soon.

Yah Nintendo will always have buyers who but it just for the 1st party games. Such as myself I've spent many hours on my Wii U. Nothing compared to PC or PS3 but still :P

What happened Nintendo?! You guys made the industry what it is today! Your legacy died with the Gamecube, and it should stay that way. Of course I will play Pre-Gamecube Era, But a Wii U & 3DS? Bull. Shit.

From what I see Nintendo liked keeping the games simple which led to their downfall because Micro$oft and Sony blew right past them,

I really like Nintendo but my problem is they've been playing it way to safe with their consoles since the Wii launch.

Ever since the Wii came out and got real popular Nintendo thought they were safe because everyone was buying one (100 million sales in 7 years not to shabby) but after that a huge plethora of games just started coming out and every game I played that wasn't a first party game was complete garbage! I was really amazed at how the console only focused on its main exclusives and almost didn't care about any multi platform game, which kinda made me see what Nintendo was becoming, a mainly hardcore fanbase, which it is.

Through the Wii's lifespan I sold my non first party games and boxed it up, I do enjoy the games but nothing had the real depth I was looking for and really that is what led me to abandon Nintendo, a good game that didn't feature the same characters for 20+ years. I like to enjoy myself in games by discovering new people and places and most Nintendo games are heavy are re imaging or simply recreating these old classic levels taking away from my enjoyment of new found discover. It was the reimaging of these games that destroyed me the most. The reason to buy a 3DS is to play sequels, and sequels, and sequels, there are no original one off games or new series, they are either add ons to original stories or games like Animal Crossing which is the same game again and again with new (addicting) stuff being added once and once again (PS this is the fourth Animal Crossing do we need one for every damn console?

I've lost any old hope in Nintendo to recover their old reigning ways which was looking at it agian only due to the competition doing stupid things making Nintendo reign supreme, something that most likely will never happen again due to Nintendo being obviously unable to be in the current.

PS: I would like a good reason to buy a Wii U that wouldn't be because of Nintendo exclusive games, because 300$ new is a doable price point.

EDIT: Looked at my wall of games, and I completely forgot to mention how my Gamecube games are multi platform  and exclusives and how the Wii and DS/3DS games are exclusives.

The majority of the time I agree, but the still push out some addictive games or the rare gem. Not too much on the Wii U yet but I have high hopes for the new Mario Kart and SUper SMash bros lol. I've also sunk a couple undred hours into the new Fire emblem game on 3ds :)

Nintendo went for fast user base route aka the Wii and now paying for it. If they had went with HD first and actually not underestimated it than things would be different. Now Nintendo for the home console has one more shot to get the hardcores aboard or might as well just make handhelds since they are good at that.
