A guide to 2014 F1 changes

Quite a few changes are expected for the 2014 Season and have recently been voted, here is a brief summary :

Changes to cars :

Formula 1 would like to emulate real world, and to help this, the cars will be much more ‘eco-friendly’ – Ok we aren’t talking Prius hybrid engines here, but every little helps.

Here are a few pointers as to what will change :

  • Engine will go from 2.4 litre V8 engine (750 Bhp) to a 1.6 litre V6 (600Bhp)

  • Gearbox will get an additional 8th forward gear

  • ERS (Energy recovery system) will replace KERS (Kinectic Energy recovery system) – ERS will also use exhaust heat to build power. The ERS can be used for up to 33 seconds per lap (compared to 6 seconds with KERS) and will generate about 160Bhp (80Bhp with KERS)

  • Fuel will be limited to 100kg per race (typically 160Kg) at the moment.

  • Minimum weight is increased as the engines are heavier.

  • Exhausts cannot be used to help aerodynamics (point upwards)

  • The body work will also change a lot – Nose height, front wing width having significant changes. No bodywork placed behind the exhausts. Bodywork does tend to change each year in any case.

Rule Changes :

  • The last race of the year will now count double (first place is worth 50 points) – The idea behind this is to avoid someone being crowned well before the end of the season
  • Cost Cap is on hold until 2015
  • Drivers will choose their racing number, which they will keep for their whole career (except for number 1 which is reserved for world champion)
  • Forced pit stops were not accepted by the teams
  • Higher weight restrictions were not accepted by all teams so will not be used in 2014

Seems Vettel doesn't like the idea either

Four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel describes plans to award double points at the final race of the 2014 Formula One season as "absurd".

Red Bull driver Vettel, who won the 2013 title with four races of the season left, also claims "drivers, fans and experts are horrified" at the proposal.

"This is absurd and punishes those who have worked hard for a whole season," the 26-year-old is quoted as saying by German newspaper Bild. "I value the old traditions in Formula One and do not understand this new rule."

I just don't see how they can say 'Well this is the last race of the season so it's worth more points than Spa, Silverstone, Monaco or any of the other races on the calender' I think it may switch off more fans than it attracts

I'm fine with all the rule changes except 1, I really hate the idea that the last race is worth double, every race should be equally as important as all the others it's turning the sport I love into a bit of a joke IMHO  :(

It has to be done, it's getting boring as fuck.

The last proper decent season was 2008, that was down to the wire.

I'd have liked to know their reason of choosing, but I guess it's just lucky numbers and the sort :)

EDIT - Found some more

I know the reason for a small number of them

Alonso - 14 - His number in his karting days and believes it is lucky

Vettel - 5 - Same as above

Hamilton - 44 - Same as above

Button - 22 - Because he won his Drivers championship as this number when at Brawn GP

Raikkonen - 7 - His number last year and saw no reason to change it

Maldonado - 13 - A very lucky number in his native Venezuela

Ricciardo - 3 - 1st number in karting and a fan of Dale Earnhardt

Rosberg - 6 - His dad's number when he won the world championship and Nico won Formula BMW in 2002 as car number 6

Bottas - 77 - Goes well with his name for marketing purposes Bo77as
