PSNP might wanna fix something about the game page for God of War Ascension.

So when you check the PSNP trophy page for God of War Ascension where you see some of the info about the game on the right side, it's says the game's other name is God of War 4. Although God of War (2018) on PS4 IS God of War 4.

So the other name of God of War 4 should go to God of War (2018), not God of War Ascension.

Just wanted to mention that, hope somebody who works on this site fixes it.

Has the new one ever officially been called God of War 4?

They’ve confirmed that God of War (2018) is a straight sequel to God of War 3, while on the other hand God of War Ascension is a prequel to the original.

So yeah, God of War (2018) is more worthy of the God of War 4 title.

I don't think either of them should have it to be honest, since neither have ever been called that. But Ascension was the 4th console release, which has always been considered the main series.

There's arguments for both, there's arguments for neither.

I think the "other name" section is listing titles that the game was referred to in the media or in the community at one point prior to release.

This is not an official title for Ascension, but it's not an official title for God of War (2018) either. There is no God of War 4, period. Ascension was probably mentioned before to be God of War 4, but God of War (2018) was also referred that way, as you can see on its page.

It's a confusing and pointless section on PSNP, but in some cases it helps people identify a game that they maybe remember from an announcement, but didn't follow  official name changes, announcements. (Like when somebody wants to play Project Beast, but they somehow missed that it was revealed to be Bloodborne, etc.)

Like @fbdbh said the "other name" section is used as a way to list the names given whether they're by fans, media, etc. Being a prequel or sequel doesn't really matter when it comes to the number given in the end. An example is with the last game I obtained the platinum Deus Ex: Human Revolution and it's sequel Deus Ex: Mankind Divided. Both games were called Deux Ex 3 (for Human Revolution) and Deus Ex 4 (for Mankind Divided) even though they're both prequels since their story happens years before the original Deus Ex.

Another example of it not really matter is with Kingdom Hearts. We have a lot of games that are either sequels to one another or take place at the same time as other games but only now we are getting the "third" game. You can point the case that the numbered games only apply with the PlayStation released ones since they're the main ones but that still leaves Birth By Sleep (a prequel released on PSP) and Re: Chain of Memories (a remake of the GBA game for the PS2 that takes place between the first game and Kingdom Hearts 2) whose story really matters in the grand scheme of things, not that the Nintendo released games aren't also important to the plot.

Actually it was the 6th, since Chains of Olympus and Ghost of Sparta have been released before.

Ghost of Sparta is one of the most important games in the series, explaining why Kratos says “I own you nothing Athena” at the beginning of the second game - people who haven’t played it always thought that Kratos became a egomaniac psychopath.

Ascension, alongside with Chains of Olympus were just ok and a little relative to the main plot...

The key word being console, Chains of Olympus and Ghost of Sparta were both released on the PSP first.

They are portable consoles. It’s a PlayStation (console) and it’s portable.

Either way, they were also released before Ascension on “consoles”.

Either way, none of that matters :)

Crikey - if that was how game numbering worked - based on chronological timeline), - can you imagine what the numbering for Assassin’s Creed would look like by now?! ?????
