Popular Post griffin123456789
It took me many years to get around to finish it a second time on Deathmarch (it's a great game but damn is it long and exhausting with all the DLC). I just wanted to reflect on it a bit on this site before we get Cyberpunk 2077. This game really is one of the best written pieces of entertainment I've come across in the past decade. I'm staggered at how good the dialogue is, how subversive it is with fairytales and legends without coming across as condescending or pretentious and how damn good this cast of characters is. I never touched a Witcher game prior to playing this and hadn't even known of the books before that. It was a testament to how level-headed the writers were that they created a plot that could be satisfying for fans and digestible for newcomers. After replaying it years later, having gone back and experienced this extra supplemental material, I can safely say it meant more to me now having read the books and played the games... and yet I still think this is a better story than ANY of the books or prior games. I even felt a little embarrassed watching the show with friends who were expecting more from me. The combat in RPGs, to me at least, usually suck. Not here though. On top of Geralt feeling satisfying as Hell to play as in combat with his laundry list of combos, spells, bombs, etc. what really impressed me was how satisfying it was to learn about your opponents. Not since Metroid Prime have I had this much fun reading diaries and biology texts about how to effectively murder living creatures. Planning and prepping with mutations and decoctions never stopped being interesting and fun. Going on a hunt, thinking you're about to face one monster, only to confront another, having to then change your strategy and oils and tonics and such? Really rich gameplay. Gwent, while I didn't bother with it at all on my second playthrough, is objectively one of the most genius mini-games ever created, simply for the fact that they made a full fledged game based off of it. The game itself also has relaxing music that makes long rounds easy on the ears and the names of the cards just make me laugh. The two DLCs, Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine, are both some of the greatest expansions ever developed for a video game. Hearts of Stone is brilliant because it is a phenomenal story with tons of morally grey situations and one of the best portrayals of Satan I have ever seen in all of fiction. Blood and Wine is terrific because for twenty bucks you get basically a small sequel to the base game and can obtain a ton of mutations, weapons and other tools that make your New Game Plus playthrough insane... oh and you get to see fucking Rapunzel hang herself with her own hair. That's the most metal thing ever. I know people have been riding this game's dick for five years straight now, but having played it again, it's easy to see why. Not everything is perfect. Geralt's movement while exploring feels clunky and stiff, the swimming, racing and platforming sections all suck and the exp rewards seem poorly thought out. But these are minor considering the insane scope of everything and how consistently human and alive everything felt. The decisions you make to get the best ending are not good cop/bad cop options on a spectrum bar. They're decisions that judge you on your ability to react to situations like an adult; to wait before immediately striking at something, to realize letting some bad guys live is a worse fate for them then killing them and to also realize that sometimes the best thing to do is blow off steam and help another person vent their frustrations with you. Fucking brilliant stuff. The fact that it pulls all this off and also manages to be one of the most mature stories of fatherhood and raising a confident daughter is something that demands credit. The Last of Us Part II is a game that got a ton of flak, I think unfairly, due to its decisions in its narrative. While I do love the duo of Joel and Ellie, and loved seeing more of them in the sequel, I honestly felt like I knew Geralt and Ciri as people by the time the credits rolled. It's a really dark and mature story. So mature, in fact, that it realizes that you don't have to have constant doom and gloom to move your audience. I laughed, I cried, I threw my fist in the air when Ciri punched that dick on Skellige who gave her shit for burying her friend and I connected to this world better than almost any other fantasy setting in recent years. In summary, this really was one of the best games of the generation and one of the greatest games ever made in its genre. I really hope CDPR can tap into this kind of magic again when they make Cyberpunk, but I'm tempering my expectations to embrace whatever kind of story they tell with it. So yeah, if you haven't played this game, you gotta change that soon. If you didn't like it, I hope you can find a game you enjoyed this much that you're willing to write a long-winded rant about it on a blog site with strangers too. That is all, goodnight. Ashbo
Couldn’t have said what you have better myself. I hold that game as the best i’ve played on a console to this day and it really is a fantastic one to play. I always recommend this to people who are yet to play it, because I know alot will definitely enjoy it because of what it offers. Grats on your 100th plat. Fun fact.... It was my 100th too a few yrs back. :fistpump:

LoveInHell
Good choice for your 100th plat. The Witcher 3 is my favourite game and its going to take A LOT to take that spot, lol. My hopes are high for Cyberpunk. Also since you played the DLC, there’s a major “spoiler” telling that Gaunter O’Dimm will come back... Which is insane!! It sounds like The Witcher 4 will happen one day... ???

HaserPL
Congrats but, don't get my trying to be a douche, why making a thread about this under the game's forum? Why not make a status update? I mean, if under every game people would be sharing their experiences and bragging how they got the platinum or whatnot, you wouldn't be able to dig through all of that to reach a post about a glitched trophy, or servers going down. I wasn't trying to brag as much as I wanted to share my thoughts on the game and how stellar I think it is. Figured the best way for most to see it was this thread. Seriously, they alway fall through for me. I often spend months kicking myself before finally settling down and shouting "do it!" in a mirror repeatedly. Combat is usually what turns me off, but Witcher was thankfully damn good in this sense.
