Hello again friends, I had one more game in mind that I could get done by the end of the Event, and it's this: Star Trek: Resurgence. An orange to boldly go where no game has gone before.

 

 

So one of my favourite genres is Narrative Adventure or the Interactive Experience if I'm feeling particularly pretentious. I previously highlighted the head developers of this model as Quantic Dream, Telltale, Dontnod, Supermassive, Deck Nine. Developers of this game were in large part ex developers from Telltale back when they shut down in 2018, but I hadn't played this game yet so I didn't know whether I should include it, among the big five. But if I should depends on if I think it's better than any post 2012 Telltale game... ummm... I think it's better than Michonne just... 

 

Well done Dramatic Labs you scraped into being among the big five six.

 

 

So the big question is: "Is there any reason I prefer nearly all Telltale game to this?" and there's a big reason that'll hang over this review like the sword of Damocles. 

 

Let's talk positives! I've never watched or read anything about Star Trek, I was able to recognise both of the returning faces but that is as much foreknowledge as I had. This game is an effective standalone that I was at no point confused at the story, (Techno babble on the other hand made my brain go on standby.)

 

Your two protagonists Rydek and Diaz are both likeable and well written characters who have a wide range of relationships with characters that they can have, as seen by the choices menu in the pause screen. I also wanna shout out my favourite characters, Ariminta, Tylas, and Nili, whose alien perspectives add a lot of weight to the story.

 

The Sci-fi is so charmingly retro like the design of the sensors that you use and observation deck looking absolutely terrible as an observation deck because it needed to accommodate film crews getting the wide shots.

 

I would have said that there's no way to check choices compared to the world but it turns out that it's on a companion website, so that's alright.

 

Now for the negatives, the trick with a "choices matter game" is not to actually make your choices matter, but to make them feel like they matter and in the course of playing and replaying the game, I can confirm that only about 4 choices felt like they mattered and indeed those ones I felt mattered were the only ones that mattered. (I've said matter a lot, oh well.) 

 

There's also very few moments to walk around and smell the roses, if you are walking around, you are solving a puzzle and have no option to do anything else, with only a couple of exceptions.

 

This game largely forgoes QTEs in place of mini-games and terrible shooting and stealth segments, in all of these moments the pace and flow takes a big hit.

 

Now the big one. I know a lot of people like playing through Telltale games all at once. But I don't. I like the episodic nature that leads to discussion and also allows for easy breaks  when you need to go eat or sleep. There's nothing like that in Resurgence, no recap if you've stopped playing, or natural break. The game expects you to play in one go. And it being 9 hours long, that's a big ask. If you like Telltale or Star Trek I do recommend this game. (And thanks to a certain Dr posting this game in an event I was hosting, otherwise I would've forgotten about this game, I hear he has a review of his own that's way more in depth.)

I don't think I will be able to complete more games before the deadline so my current count should be 3 Pink games and 3 Orange games.

So the total number of games is 6 and I wish I could've completed more games but I don't have that much time lately...

 

There are some people who want to donate a amount for their completed games and I would like to do that as well

@Beyondthegrave07 Can you please tell me what I need to do for that?

There's really a few options you can donate to... all worthy causes fighting the good fight and really no bad answers.

 

The Jimmy V foundation is a good one. Originally found by ESPN years ago in honor of Jimmy Valvano who was a former college coach and ESPN announcer. 

 

The American Cancer Society is also a very reputable organization that has been helping with research and those battling Cancer for years.

 

St. Jude is also a great place to donate to who specializes in helping children with cancer and donations make it so that no parent is ever charged for their child's treatment. 

 

What I'm saying is that there is no wrong places to donate. I donate to a specific team I am on in the American Cancer Society as part of Relay for Life, and as much as I would love to share the link and have a bunch of people donate to my team directly, I have received too many death threats or weird cryptic messages from (former) members of PSNP who have no business knowing what my name is and where I roughly live. Better to be safe than sorry.

I'm hoping I can squeeze in Sakura Wars for one more pink before the end of the event, but it's not the shortest game out there and I only started it today, so I'm not sure if that's realistic. If not, then I expect this will be my last update.

Both can count for orange (you can even make the argument for pink for Oneshot).

Finally played this game that's been on my backlog for literal years, and it was absolutely phenomenal. It's a game about exploration, discovery, and secrets - so keeping myself to an almost complete blackout of info about the game for so long was totally worth it. 🧡

Finally finished my 3rd ORANGE game:

 

And I think that will be me for this event.  I *could* squeeze in one more orange game but I really need to get caught up on art commissions, so I will leave it at 6 completed games.  As with previous events, I will donate £5 for each game that I have completed, and then double that amount.  And I've already set aside a handful of games for next year's event, assuming it happens again. 😂

About last night:

PS4 EU: 70,60% - Team Pink

 

This game has been in my backlog for a while and is a mildly challenging points shooter. Even though some people found a way to get the Platinum Trophy within 10 minutes, the first boss gave me much trouble. So I decided to level up towards lvl 23. Leveling up worked fast through the challenge mode (needs to be unlocked first). This unlocks Boss Rush Mode. Beating 1 boss gave me the last Trophy before the Platinum Trophy.

Yeah, I didn't think about it, but you're right. The underbelly of the vehicle is orange so I guess I too have a game to submit. Just know this will be approved on December 5th to make sure it doesn't surpass 80% (which it's easy enough where it technically could).

 

So here's my orange submission:

 

 

Really short platinum, but it was pretty enjoyable. If you play on the right tracks and don't place worse than 10th on any tracks on Full Season mode, it's pretty easy too.

 

I wouldn't be surprised if this shoots up to 60% or 70% at some point.

The Wild At Heart

I was originally intrigued by this game after I heard it played similar to the Pikman games. I've always wanted to try the Pikman games, but not really interested enough to pay 50-$60 for them on the Switch if you know what I mean.... so here's my PSN substitute to fulfill that itch.

 

Overall, the game was pretty enjoyable. I found myself lost a bit too much though because the game really didn't give you much direction and sometimes got a bit frustrated because it was normally something really stupid and simplistic stopping me... which was not seeing that I can drop down in particular spots. Though, this is more fault on my own for just not consulting my map, probably.

 

The one thing that was really annoying though was the dumbfuckery of the little plips that follow you. I legit had times where they would not come back to me and get abandoned and times where they LITERALLY ran into waste and killed themselves as I was switching back and forth to solve puzzles. It was like times I wanted them to stay still they would follow me and times I wanted them to follow me after fighting an enemy they'd get lost in a corner and wouldn't realize it until dark. 

 

Anyways, I would recommend giving it a try on Extra despite the silliness of the AI sometimes. The story is pretty good and I enjoyed the light-hearted slapstick comedy.

I played the PS4 version last night for the exact same reason as Vulpine. Another Pink to add with Foreclosed.

 

 

It's a very stylish third person shooter that often uses cool comic book aesthetics.

No because I saw how short that list of credits were and with such a small development team, I'm happy to operate by the Thumper rule.

 

 

Actually I do have something nice to say. The game got so much better when they introduced telekinesis. Bullets? Old and boring. Fire extinguishers? Fun and exciting.
